My heart is filled with joy when i see people get together in the scope of music. And just living your life peacefully and have your soul filled with the art of music. I ordered a jouhikko from crossroads music which will arrive in 1 month or a bit more, cant wait. Also got a new classical guitar and intend on buying a kalimba. For me, philosophically, life is pretty trivial, there isnt much that matters, in fact nothing matters, existence is chaotic and pointless. But being a human, music is one of my guilty pleasures that makes life so beautiful, worth it, i'm happy. I dont have to be a master, at least for now, im taking my time, but i am happy and i dont need much more. Love the way you play!!!!! Good work, keep going 🥰

This is AMAZING! There's a lot of Finns who live in my area in the US (I live around Lake Superior, and there was a huge Finnish emigration to the area in the 19th and 20th centuries and some people still speak an old version of Finnish). I've heard a lot of Finnish folk music on the kantele, I've never heard this instrument before. It's BEAUTIFUL!!! And you're a superb musician.

I’m glad you got to know jouhikko! There are many jouhikkoplayers in Finland, for example Päivi Hirvonen, Tytti Metsä, Kirsi Vinkki, Ilkka Heinonen, Rauno Nieminen, Mikko Haapoja and Pekko Käppi.

"...a little bit bigger, the mensure is 33 cm..." Oh, and I thought that my talharpa of 37,5 cm is too small :D Jouhikko looks gorgeous. I like the way the tailpiece is made, so elegant. And that crispy sound of thin wood of the instrument is so pleasant. The melody is interesting (tried to catch some Northern viking vibes - an impression of foggy morning in some Northern island's port), but asks for some development.
@lassilogren
@lassilogren Год назад
Hi! Yeah, your instrument is not too small at all. The 30cm is also fine measurement for playing, especially for the player who has not very thick fingers. Feel free to develope that melody :) That shape was their way to sing it in the Faroes.

@lassilogren Год назад
Hi, thanks for your message. Yes, I’m also very glad that Jouhikko / Tagelharpa is coming more and more popular, even in South Dakota! One note about a bass tagelharpa: It has a deep and mystical sound, but playing actual melodies on it is not very handy or natural. So, maybe one day you’ll order a smaller size of Jouhikko ;) But of course everybody are free to play what ever size of instruments. 👍

Hello, thank you for your message. Yeah, some people have asked me to do tutorials. I have replied that why not, some day. Somehow I feel there are so much to talk and to show that it is not easy to decide from where to start :) Also, there is a bigger responsibility to make the tutorials than make a video where you are just playing. Anyway, I’m giving once in a while Online lessons to anybody who is willing to hear my advice. During the lesson it is also possible to make questions and explain details etc. lassi.logren@gmail.com

Yes, just start to practice that tune 👍 It is not the easiest one, because you have to change your left hand position up now and then - and play also two notes from the middle string. But you will get it!

I enjoyed this, thank you. The nylon strings, what type of nylon are they and were they purchased as complete or made up from nylon strands by hand? I know how to make horsehair strings so am very interested. I’m also a Crwth player!
@lassilogren
@lassilogren Год назад
Thank you! These strings are made by hand, simply twisted. As far as I know, the material is fishing line. Mr. Rauno Nieminen made also the strings. You can find more info for example from the FB-group ”Talharpa and other bowed harps”.

I am fastinated, by the playing and by the new Jouhikko. To be true, I liked the sound of your old one a little bit more, the new one seems to be louder, but the other one was smoother, maybe, as u said, it it due to the synthetic strings. Maybe horsehair would give a sound closer to your previous Jouhikko.
@lassilogren
@lassilogren Год назад
Correct, this new one is much louder. The volume of the instrument is not been a major thing for me in overall. There are other things on the sound that means more for me. Anyway, it is useful for me to have one louder jouhikko for example for the group teaching or on certain acoustic concerts. And yes, the string material is a big thing also. One day I’ll make another video with the horsehair strings.
@csabahegedus8218
@csabahegedus8218 Год назад
Can I ask you two questions? Which string is closest to your thumb? "C4" or "D4"? And the bridge is flat or curved?
@lassilogren
@lassilogren Год назад
Hello! D4 is closest my thum. Actually I realized now that I’m not playing at all the C4 string on this song. The most common basic scale of this tuning (but not on this song) is: C4 the open string D4 the open string E4 (or Eb4) the index finger F4 the middle finger G4 the ring finger A4 the pinky finger The middle string as an open string gives the G3 drone note. The bridge is curved.

@@lassilogren Thank you very much for your answer. Maybe it will be a little more difficult for me to learn to play my jouhikko (made by myself, but looks like yours), because i'm using steel violin strings. Your answer is a big-big help. Thank You! Almost forgot, great melody and great playing!
@lassilogren
@lassilogren Год назад
@@csabahegedus8218 my pleasure to help! It’s fine to have the metal strings. The sound is then just different, a bit clearer and louder. But I think it shouldn’t be more difficult to play with the metal strings.
@csabahegedus8218
@csabahegedus8218 Год назад
@@lassilogren Maybe it's just difficult for me because I didn't play the jouhikko before and hard for me to finding the right notes. "a bit clearer and louder" yes and perhaps a bit tinkling (maybe the right word), but i'm love it! Thanks again!
