I was at that game, way up in the right field seats... I'll never forget the sound of that pitch hitting his helmet, even with all the crowd noise it was clear as day. It set the stage for Clemens to make an even bigger ass of himself in the world series throwing the bat

I find it an act of pure cowardness that a pitcher would take a very hard object and purposefully throw it at a batters head. Clemens is definitely one of the biggest offenders baseball has seen over the last 30 years. I believe throwing at a guys head is a criminal act whether playing a game or not.

Tino Martinez got a 89 mph pitch right on his ass cheek from Glendon Rusch as pay back - weak if you ask me. Matinez didn't say a word and took first base. I've always been annoyed at the players on this Met squad as anyone of them had a chance to live on in Met folklore for YEARS - all one of them had to do was go after Clemens. Maybe a drag bunt down the first baseline and take Clemens out at first base, maybe start something up on the way back to the dugout after making an out or maybe just get something going while you step up to the plate - nothing happened save the Rusch pitch which again wasn't anything fast compared to what Clemens could throw and it was a good natured Martinez who paid the price. Always annoyed me that no one stepped up because if someone had, they would have lived on in Met lore for a long time.

Consider the last three times they had faced off before this: >>June 6, 1999, at Yankee Stadium: Piazza 2-run home run(2-2) >>July 9, 1999, at Shea Stadium: Piazza 3-run home run(1-3) >>June 9, 2000, at Yankee Stadium: Piazza grand slam home run(2-3)

He was Scared to throw to Piazza - Mike Piazza batted .364/.440/.955 in 25 career plate appearances against Roger Clemens (includes postseason). He had 4 HR to just 2 K.

@mt3311 Месяц назад
Exactly, Piazza was lightin him up. So he backed him up off the plate. He did the same thing to his own son. It is called intimidation.

@@mt3311 Exactlyyyyy.. I remember those games VIVIDLY I've been a Yankee fan since 96 - Clemens was a bully but so SCARED of piazza who seems like the nicest dude in retrospect its kinda ironic 🤣 I grew up in harlem a train stop from the stadium can hear the crowd from my house, I knew he was afraid of him and that taught me young its true what they say - dont underestimate that someone will attack bc of fear you😧
@mt3311
@mt3311 18 дней назад
@@cgunn101 Clemens wasn't scared of anyone. What happened is that Piazza was lighting him up, and Clemens wanted to get an edge. He did that by throwing at people. Throwing the jagged bat was an intimidation tactic, that was low risk with high yield. Clemens was just a mean sumbitch. Mean in the vein of Bob Gibson. He hit his own kid, for lighting him up, so why should Piazza or anyone else be different.

@@mt3311 If you have to resort to Throwing at a batters head or hitting him or walking him instead of PITCHING TO HIM AND STRIKING HIM OUT then YOU'RE SCARED OF HIM 🤣 Pedro Martinez was the best pitcher in Clemens' era bc he threw at guys to make a point and show he wasnt scared despite being 5'6"
@cgunn101
@cgunn101 17 дней назад
@@mt3311 And throwing the bat wasn't low risk - he could've and should've been suspended but the league just kinda let it go bc Clemens had so much star power at that time unless he was EXPOSED AS A STEROID/HGH USER 😩

Should be an automatic ejection if it is a head shot. Then again, like I said before, the Yankee$ got a lot of calls to go their way in this era.

Clemens beans Piazza early... couldve been first inning, maybe 2nd, and then i remember the rest of the game got rained out quickly afterward was almost like instant karma... ive never been to Yankee Stadium since and i wont until the Mets are playing them in the WS again
