Join with me on the Tully, nymphing my way along the stream, explain my technique and theories. Even had a little top water action as a bonus at the end of the day. Don't think you need the exact fly to catch fish, I used 7 different flies, Globug-Pheasant Tail-Shrimp-Squirmy Wormy-Walt's Worm-Lively Legz Hares Ear-Griffith's Gnat, and caught fish on every one of them. Presentation, presentation is far more important than the fly choice.

Do you always Nymph fish downstream? Or are their circumstances when you fish upstream also?
@pawoodsnwater7551
@pawoodsnwater7551 3 года назад
I really don’t have a preference, but it definitely depends on what size of stream. On smaller streams I usually work upstream on medium to large it doesn’t matter. What does matter is if I’m getting hits on the swing and hang, if I am, I’m definitely working downstream because that technique rarely works if you work upstream because you’ve already hit the water downstream so those fish below you are not apt to hit the swing. Usually other anglers may sway my decision also. On bigger streams or rivers, I really don’t notice that playing into my success or not, obviously either way you gotta be careful in all your approaches. Thanks for the question.

Could specifically specify what you are casting: the split shot, the tungsten fly, or the line. Or a combination of both. Thanks.
@pawoodsnwater7551
@pawoodsnwater7551 3 года назад
Me? I love fly line. I’m casting my line, I build my tandem rig the way basic fly lines are built, basically heavier down to lighter at the fly end. I know there are many different line formulas but I’m saying basically that’s how they’re built, and that’s how I build my rig , from heavier fly up top down to my lighter fly at the end, not at all how dropper rigs are setup or drop shot rigs.

When you are euro nymphing, you’re casting mono and/or fluorocarbon; which doesn’t cast anything like a traditional flyline. In euro fishing, you’re casting the weight of the tungsten beaded fly. In regular fly fishing, you’re casting the weight of the line. When I watch you cast, it looks like you’re casting the line. Please explain. Bill
@pawoodsnwater7551
@pawoodsnwater7551 3 года назад
Hi Bill! You are exactly correct! I am NOT euro Nymphing, not tightlining, not using an all mono leader, just regular good old American Nymphing. Check out my video Nymphing Strategies Part 3 and the first ten minutes of my video Nymphing a Snowy Penns Creek for my setup. Those two will explain in more detail. Thanks for your question and I appreciate you watching.

Bought a new cabelas vector 8 ft 3 weight feels a little soft but makes it much more fun. Just wanted an opinion on what weight rods you prefer you seem to know much more about fly fishing than I do.
@pawoodsnwater7551
@pawoodsnwater7551 6 лет назад
cody Meikrantz Hey Cody! Congratulations on your new rod. An 8ft/3wt rod is a good all around trout rod, as long as it feels comfortable in your hands, that’s what’s important. You can learn to fly fish with any rod, as time goes by you may want a different rod for different situations, but believe me not necessary. All us long time flyfishermen are guilty of that. Don’t just use it for trout tho, you can have a ball with it on bluegills and bass also. The more you use it the more experience you’ll get. At first try nymphing with just one or two bugs, don’t go to three yet until you really get a good feel for everything. Wish you all the best with it. Keep watching the videos, learn as much as you can, then go apply it. Have fun and tight Lines!
@popcorn417
@popcorn417 6 лет назад
Great video, what do you do to your leader when you go from nymphing to dryfly fishing with same rod? Thanks for all the info .
@pawoodsnwater7551
@pawoodsnwater7551 6 лет назад
Thanks Ken! Honestly, I use the same butt section and just modify from my 4x down to my tippet. Not that critical unless you’re a professional caster going for distance, most casts are within 20ft to 50ft. Tippet size and length more critical, I mostly use 5x for dries and 4x for underneath.

How long does it take for " stock trout " to start feeding on bugs? Or nymphs, glo bugs, shrimp. I want to start flying fishing but we only have stock trout here in southern wv. Thanks
@pawoodsnwater7551
@pawoodsnwater7551 6 лет назад
TEST Fifty Hello! Well, for attractors I’ve seen fish hit them right away, same day they’re stocked, but they definitely feed better each day as they get acclimated to the new stream. As for as bugs, I’d give them 3-4 days minimum, then obviously better as they get used to seeing they bug life happening and seeing other fish feed. Good luck!

Nice fishing technique, where would you place your split shot in relation to the flies?
@pawoodsnwater7551
@pawoodsnwater7551 6 лет назад
Chuck Peacock Hi Chuck, for nymphing and using a Globug as my point fly, I put my split shot or two above the Globug about 5 inches because it takes forever for them to sink.
@gsflycaddis
@gsflycaddis 6 лет назад
Your nymphing is really excellent and advanced. Is that the modified version of Euro nymphing? So you will add indicator when you fish deep pool, that sometimes makes me hard to choose with or without indicators. Thanks for the good video.
@pawoodsnwater7551
@pawoodsnwater7551 6 лет назад
Greg Sheu Hi Greg! Thank you for watching and commenting. I really don’t like to label nymphing as Euro or Czech or tight lining, big debate over the origin. To me, it’s just nymphing, whether it’s in close, out far , shallow or deep water. You just have to adapt to the situation. George Daniels Dynamic Nymphing book is excellent. If you can get ahold of it, study it, the bible on nymphing.

It's hard for me to see in the video. When fishing without an indicator, how long is your leader and tippet and how much fly line do you have out? Is fly line ever on the water or just beyond the rod tip? Appreciate your help.
@pawoodsnwater7551
@pawoodsnwater7551 6 лет назад
There's no set rule, it depends on how deep the water is, how fast the water is, how far out your drift is. remember, w/o an indicator, your rod and line are always in front of your flies leading the way, no slack line, no S bends. The only time your flies are ahead of your line or the rod is towards the end of your drift when your starting the swing, and at the end of the swing, always let your flies hang there for a good 5-10 sec., then flip back upstream. And always make sure your have enough weight to occasionally feel bottom. Hope this helps.

listening to you over the course of the year, i never went winter fly fishing, but after the holidays, i am going to Spring Creek or Penn's creek, what is the best weather, that is degrees to go fishing any idea?
@pawoodsnwater7551
@pawoodsnwater7551 6 лет назад
VINCENT TANINIES Well Vincent, first, thank you for watching and commenting. My suggestions if you’re gonna head out to Central PA for Winter flyfishing for the first time, definitely try Spring Creek first. It really fishes well all over. I would definitely go on a weekday Tuesday thru Thursday, and fish either in or upstream or downstream of Fisherman’s Paradise, about a mile and a half in either direction. It doesn’t matter the temperature outside, but pick a day with minimal wind and if possible a higher humidity, also if possible after a good rain even better. I fished Spring last year with a buddy, and we fished up in the gorge above the Paradise. The whole day hovered around 10 degrees, it was cloudy and flurried off n on all day. We honestly caught 50-60 trout between us. Just dress accordingly and use a face mask and handwarmers in your gloves and on your feet. Hope this helps. Good luck n tight lines!

Wow, you had a great day, nice brown trout. I have to ask you what you would recommend as far as rod length and line size for Valley Creek for your high sticking nymph method, need to get out to the Tully, long trip for me but looks like it's full of qualtiy fish.
@pawoodsnwater7551
@pawoodsnwater7551 6 лет назад
Chuck Peacock For Valley Creek, an 81/2-9ft 3-4wt. rod is sufficient for nymphing and dry fly fishing, wouldn’t go any longer, some spots too tight. The Tully is definitely worth a visit, check out my Tully flyfishing tour videos for a bunch of good spots.

Nice video Scott as always I enjoy watching them since I am stuck in NYC and cant go fishing :( It seems lots of the fish you caught that day were actually on the swing, meaning as the flies started going up with the current you got hits. I am pretty sure some kind of soft hackle fly would have probably increased your catch rate even more. All the best and keep the videos coming.
@pawoodsnwater7551
@pawoodsnwater7551 6 лет назад
JokiBroki Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. Yea, really, like I said in the video, catching fish on the swing in Winter is kind of unusual. Maybe I should’ve tried a soft hackle, bet it would’ve worked too. Thanks for the comment.
@JokiBroki
@JokiBroki 6 лет назад
PA WOODS N WATER yes very unusual but it can happen if the temperature of the water goes up a bit fish will start being more active. So couple of degrees up can make them go for the flies. If you ever do tie soft hackles try doing CDC instead of partridge as hackle. My catch rate is better with CDC is my belief. All the best
@bill2penn
@bill2penn 6 лет назад
Nice job Scott. I fished that 222 bridge section the day after you and only caught two but they were nice ones. Since you edit your videos, how many flies do you typically lose to snags or trees? That 222 section always eats my flies. Plus it can be treacherous wading. Also, what do you use for settings on your GoPro? Thanks, Bill
@pawoodsnwater7551
@pawoodsnwater7551 6 лет назад
Bill Dailey Honestly, only about 1 a trip or none, I really try my best to get my snags out, I don’t care if I blow a hole, plenty of fish all over. Thanks for watching and commenting.

balor7 Sorry, I rarely fish streamers, I could actually use a lesson on streamers, they’re just not my thing. Conditions have to be right for me to try streamers and when I do use them, I usually use a bunny leech or wooly buggers still dead drifting them. My son is the streamer pro, he’s big time on smallmouths, pike and muskies.

@5:50 ,even better; back out and work Upstream.
@pawoodsnwater7551
@pawoodsnwater7551 4 года назад
unionse7en Hi bud! Well, in an ideal situation, working upstream is the way to go on a small stream and no one is above you. It is situational, many times on bigger waters I’ll fish downstream especially if I’m swinging flies or if there’s better water downstream. Or it may depend on where you enter the stream or where you park. So I guess I’m saying that you should know how to fish in either direction and the way I work the water is the same as I break it in to sections. I generally would like to fish upstream but a lot of times it just doesn’t work that way, so no hard set rule whether you wanna go up or down. Thanks for pointing that out.
