A triple that claims the 5s in box 3...learned something else to look for today

I'm not sure if I explained this well, but it's mostly a shorthand, since you could just apply the triple to the rest of the column and treat it as normal claiming by the column. But, it's a useful shorthand regardless!

Tricky one for me today. Took me forever to find the two triples in column 7, which disguised the three naked singles holding the puzzle together. Literally had to pencil everything to spot it.

For me today's puzzle asked for the hunt on triples or pairs. After a lot of scanning , i spotted in box 3 and column 7 no place for 367. .......... triple was found. You did it with the other remaining triple. Nice

I got stuck on the claiming 6's. When I go back and look at my puzzle it just looks so obvious. Why does obvious have a B? Anyone? But lessons like this, where missing something makes me lose, are a good way for me to learn. Another puzzle tomorrow. Until then thank you for another good lesson Rangsk

Claiming is definitely one of the hardest things to see in the NYT puzzles!

First kind comment again. A quick solve for me as well. This was a straightforward and enjoyable solve for me. Spoiler follows ... --- -- -- -- -- I started on band 2 as well. I saw an NYT Trick that let me place a 1,3,8,9 quad in the 4 empty cells of r4 in boxes 5 and 6, That immediately resolved to the two 3,9 and 1,8 pairs in box 5 and 6 respectively. That caused the entire band to immediately collapse to the same collection of pairs that you found in your solve. The 1,5,8 triple in c7 immediately placed the 5 in box 1 (r2c3). My solve collapsed after that. My time was, as usual, slower than yours (33 min) because I finished my usual time-consuming corner-marking (after band 2) as is my practice.

The 158 triple in c7 was the key for me. Thanks! I hadn't seen it. I need to learn more about naked triples because to me it looked like 1 and 5 could get pencilled into the same column in box 9. That is the state at 5:11 in your video. Thanks again.

And what would happen if you did put a 1, 5, or 8 in other cells of the column? Try it out and see how that affects the 158 naked triple.

I spotted three (at least) hidden triples, that helped me along. Otherwise, it was a matter of noticing things such as cells seeing a digit.

Took me forever to see the consequences of the pointing 6's in box 2 leading to the 158 triple 😅

Help me understand how you said there is a 1-5-8 triple with the lower part of the column still open.

Every puzzle that I cant solve involves this type of triple. I think I get it now, it is not the placement of the 158 but the remaining 367. You cant put 367 on the 158 boxes.

If you try to place 1, 5, or 8 anywhere else in that column, what will you fill those three cells with? You can't spread 15, 18, or 58 across three cells so one will end up empty. You can't have empty cells. This is called a naked triple, as opposed to a hidden triple which is what you're more used to.

@Rangsk thank you that is helpful. I am still a bit of a novice when it comes to hard Sudokus
