It's weird that they don't understand people not wanting to fritter their lives away working for soulless corporations.
@Ravenelvenlady
@Ravenelvenlady Год назад
Exactly! This phenomenon is not about NOT working hard, it's at the core about work- life BALANCE in the end. Slaving away for a corporation CANNOT become the priority of your life. You work to live, not live to work (which is a formula for exploitation this capitalist system is based on that gen Z is no longer accepting.)
@GoedelingThePrime

I get it that people don't want to work soulless corporations, neither do i...But we can't start doing nothing and having absolute no sense of responsibility to society. Soulless corporations still create jobs, jobs that feed families! They feed also my family! We need to get out of this nihilistic way of thinking!
@Ravenelvenlady
@Ravenelvenlady Год назад
@@GoedelingThePrime You COMPLETELY misunderstand what these people are saying. It is NOT about "doing nothing". It is about WORK LIFE BALANCE..not allowing yourself to be EXPLOITED by giving your whole life to a corporation, as many generations BEFORE have been indoctrinated into accepting. DON'T GET IT TWISTED! I am GEN X and I understand what these young folks are trying to accomplish, but so many have drunk the exploitative capitalist kool aide, THEY REFUSE to see that a change in our lives vis a vis work NEEDS to change. "Just take a $60-80,000 job" - Do you ever feel like you're a lot effing poorer than you think when some kid can "just get a $60-80,000 job"? As if they're talking about working at McDonalds?
@watson457
@watson457 Год назад
Alternatively, working at McDonalds is hard af. Always standing, moving, dealing with customers, hot & greasy environment. Not a great comparison. Idk about you but wouldn't sign up to work 40+hr/week at McDs for $60-80k.

@gordongekko2781 Год назад
@@watson457 You missed his point. He wasn't comparing workloads. He was comparing the apparent ease at which these kids can just pick up a $60-80k job as if it was just a part-time side hustle. I know exactly what he means. I'm 48 years old and I never had an employer pay me that much. Yet, she described the hypothetical job as one they would just work a few hours, check-in, then check-out. Apparently employers are now paying young workers upper-middle class wages to work part-time. How do I get one of those jobs???
@caramela4830
@caramela4830 Год назад
Have we stopped to think these kids get these jobs because they're college educated?? Also, when we adjust for inflation the pay is actually less. From experience, a bachelor's degree always increases our pay. It is not a new phenomenon. The way I see it. If a person has the discipline and knowledge to make it through college with a bachelor's and a master's degree. They deserve their higher pay for slaving through school and putting in those dues. If we didn't, we'll continue running on a different hamster wheel then the rest.
@toddfarkman2177
@toddfarkman2177 Год назад
@@caramela4830 What's stupid about "a bachelor's degree will increase your pay" is that you're comparing someone with something vs someone with nothing. I think a lot of people are missing the point here, these people are talking about just having a job and not necessarily pursuing a career. It’s just going to work, doing your hours and going home. It’s ok to not want to take on more responsibilities or manage people it’s ok to work for money just for survival and use your personal time to develop skills and attributes that are unrelated to earning money. It’s ok to just have a job and not make it your primary focus. A myth of capitalism is that we need to derive self worth and a sense of identity from our work and this is simply saying the opposite, this is not a threat, people have always done this and it’s just got a new name.

Isn't parenting just a scapegoat? Just off the top of my head, Gen Z as a cohort was basically born into 9/11 and the corresponding recession, saw their parents get laid off in the meltdown, and then graduated into Covid. During most of their lives, we were engaged in two long wars. During that time, we went from almost closing our national deficit in the 90's to blowing it out from 2001-today. Their college loans have blown up in price, interest rates are so high that they can't borrow to hit the life goal posts like earlier generations have, they're putting off marriage, and the jobs they thought would be good are being disrupted by AI. Politics have devolved into a mean-spirited food fight. Europe has fallen into war. Houses are out of reach. Car payments are now as large as mortgage payments used to be. It costs $15 to get a burrito at chipotle, meanwhile salaries haven't kept up. Natural disasters are picking up in intensity and frequency, and temperatures are rising. Mass shootings are a daily occurrence. To top it off, they are inundated in social media posts that present other people's lives in a rosy light for comparison to their own comparatively worse life. On top of that, as a people we've been experiencing increasingly inequality for decades. Millennials were born in a country where one parent could work and put a roof over their head. That was painfully changed in approximately their first decade of life. Gen Z, on the other hand, have seen it slide to the point that it's common for cities to have the "working homeless" and basic costs like education and shelter are such an albatross that they can't even launch and never really had an expectation to. I can see where the anxiety comes from, and in the absence of that, nihilism like we're seeing in China's younger generation. Millennials had it rough, but they at least had it good enough to dare to dream for a bright future. Gen Z has no dream, only various ways of dulling the pain, and a sense that there's no point saving the seed stock for an increasingly ruined future, so they might as well sell it off while there's still something to sell. That would explain why Gen X aspired for jobs with longevity like doctors and lawyers, Millennials aspired or jobs with high pay and early retirement like computer programming and investment banking, and Gen Z just aspires to make some quick cash as a RU-vid or Twitch streamer and doesn't even want to think about what they will be doing in 20 years. Can't blame them. This is a generation that has been steeped in anxiety-inducements since birth. No wonder they're anxious.

Does anyone know people whose families can buy their way into the top colleges and then get them a job at their company where they accelerates to the top without having to put in the hard work of those people without their "connections". I rest my case

No one wants to slave away at work and younger people have realized that’s ALL boomers have done. .and still doing. We’re not gonna “pull ourselves up by our boot straps” Sandra, there’s more to life than that. Not to mention y’all’s issue thinking younger ppl can’t have real life, valid experiences that can change work culture shows your single mindedness. And everyone has some sort of anxiety, some more extreme than others.. get over it. It’s not just gEn zZZz

Hey I’m a 20 something that’s done 4 years of service and holds a job at a small company now. It’s not the anxiety, it’s the anxiety trade off. The minimum wage to basic consumer goods chart is the biggest gap in the history of our fiat system and college grads are only getting 4 dollars more than what minimum wage should be at based on this model. So tell me why we should stress to take care of your company when we aren’t getting taken care of? You don’t understand because you’re not in our situation.

Tell that to the people still alive who remember the times of "working only for food and a place to sleep." Talk to the generation of Chinese who worked like that in the 70s. There is a good chance that China will soon overtake you, and then there will be a huge social and financial crash in the US. When unemployment and hunger stare you in the face, the next generations will again be happy for working 12 hours a day for which they can buy food, clothes and a place to sleep.

Geez this conversation is junk! They’re missing the point of “lazy girl jobs”. The young people don’t want their lives to revolve around working 60 hours a week for corporate America and still have no hope of being able to afford to have kids or afford to be a home owner. For goodness sakes CNBC, get some young people on your writing and reporting team, this is such an old person perspective. Notice no one at the table is under 45. The more I listen, the more condescending this conversation is towards young people.

Women are finding out that they don't get real life satisfaction from putting their identity and a lot of hours in their carreer. I know it is super taboo today, but there is actually a difference between men and women when it comes to whether they can handle a hard job with a lot of stressors. God did not create us the same. There is a reason why it is the man who should be the provider, and not the woman. I am not saying that women aren't worth the same as men. I am saying we have different qualities and different gifts.

As someone else a little bit older I respect Gen z for this approach. Similar to "quiet quitting", these young people are saying that they want work to be a part of their lives, not their entire lives. So many people from our generation sacrificed everything (family, health,etc) in the pursuit of money and I think younger people are simply saying that is not their desire. I applaud this! On the flip side, they also can't complain about not getting ahead in a corporate world.

In my opinion, whoever implemented participation trophies is responsible for the weakness seen in young adults today. Losing is uncomfortable. The response from losing is to brush oneself off, get back in the competition and work harder to improve. This is uncomfortable but builds character and perseverance. So simple and has worked for millennia.

Na, it has nothing to do with winning or losing. Gen Z hasn't been living under a rock, they(we) have observed the elders in our family, who lost their time and mental we'll being to the company they work in. These companies did a great job making sure the previous generation lived on an illusion of achieving something great, like hanging a carrot in front of a Donkey. Gen Z knows this from the very beginning and doesn't want to repeat the same mistake of being slaves to the Corporate, as previous generation did. And lastly, It's stupid of you to give the analogy of, Winning and losing. The game is rigged, starting lines and rules are different for everyone, and trying to win this game is literally the way, previous generations ended up wasting their lives on...

Especially since most of these Gen Z's have a significant amount of debt, how are they going to get out of the hole by just coasting? How do they get ahead? Now, assuming their financial house is in order, all bets are off; do what you want at your leisure as long as you have the ability to find another cake job and coast.
