When you cut a deck board, the exposed edge is always lighter than the rest of the board. What do you do about it? Well, we've always painted the ends of it with color-matched paint, but sometimes it's hard to perfectly match the color. Our friends at sachco sent us this NYX color sensor to check out. Will it help me find color matched paint quicker?

Appreciate the review! Just a quick tip - when you're matching paints, we'd suggest avoiding the use of the device for touch-up jobs. While it might work in some cases, there are instances where an exact paint match isn't feasible due to factors like aging, sun staining, and more. Our recommendation is to repaint an entire section or surface from edge to edge. For instance, if you're repainting a room, it's best to cover an entire wall rather than just the problem area. When you compare two sections painted edge-to-edge, the human eye cannot spot the difference if done this way.

It would be helpful for the end grain to be sealed and smooth. A filler such as Durhams would work. Paint over the smoothed surface for a closer match.

Another vote for Sherwin or Miller Paint if you have one nearby

Go to Sherwin Williams... ;-)

It’s the texture of the end grain versus the face. It will never absorb the color the same. What does the manufacturer of the decking say?

Agreed. I would seal the cut end grain with some sort of primer/sealer, then paint for better match. Also, +1 for Sherwin Williams.

The lighting in these stores will always drive you crazy. Mostly fluorescent with a discontinuous color spectrum. Since decks are usually outside (duh), check your color match outside in direct sunlight and shielded from direct sunlight.

Great review I would have hated to spend the enormous amount of money the app charges to get something that my eye can do.I think I saw the app was like almost $400 per year, is that right?

What values do I need to have a shop mix the color using the scan I did?

Ive got a guy that can get it close with my nix, then finish matching by eye. I'm a painter, and use him all the time , forget HomeDepot,Sherwin Williams,etc..
