You are a true inspiration David l have a old Southern Cross Radio Gram centre console with Mirrored display and Lighting . It has a Giant 12 inch Loudspeaker., the Radio has MW SW.1 SW.2 SW.3 With Magic eyeTuneing valve my Father Bought it in the 1950s after he got married l still have it but it needs a little attention. I know that it is rare so I have kept it in as good a condition as possible .l need someone as good as You to restore it back to its original condition Problem is l am in N. S . W . Sydney thanks for the inspirational video.it has re enforced my Trust in old Tubes. . Regards Ross 😁

David your work and videos are superb. I've been watching them back to back. PVA is the way to go with speaker surrounds. Be careful spraying the cone, in addition to your warnings on potential coil rubbing, the sound of the speaker will also change.

I rebuilt my 1983 Sansui speakers three years ago. At 33 years old, they were literally brand new when compared to your phoenix radio speaker. I fully appreciate what you went through. Another great job.

Hello from Temuka NZ, I could see the Temuka pottery factory from my house till a year ago .

In 1977, I was preparing to leave the United States Army as my second 3 year hitch was coming to an end. To that end, my unit released me early from my field recruiters duties (Didn't want a recruiter who was getting ready to get out, you know!) So to kill the time, I enrolled in a community college to study auto mechanics. One of the first things the instructor told us was to remove all rings and metal watch bands before going to work in the shop area in fact we would get demerit points that counted against our overall grade should we be found wearing such items. The reason, of course was that such items could easily short out electrical circuits should the ring come in contact with the positive wire and ground. This short would pass enough amps to melt the gold in your ring, or the metal in your watch band and also burn your finger or wrist very badly, in fact, he told us of students who lost their fingers to such incidents. Of course the chance os shorting out 240 volts or higher in a radio chasse may not be as probable, however the chance does exist. This is why I wear no jewelry or metal banded watches when tinkering with my hobby builds of different circuits. Just a thought I figured it would not hurt to share here. Of course now that I lost my wonderful wife of 51 years and 4 days to cancer last summer, I no longer wear a gold wedding band with that little diamond in it anyhow. I did wear it for a few months to honor her but people began to talk of my mind getting a bit weak after the hell of seeing cancer eat her alive so to please them I did remove it. I keep it in a small box on my dresser and still look at it every night before retiring, a sort of good night to that wonderful woman who gave me such joy for so very long. Never take your lovely wife for granite as some day you may be without her, and God how that hurts.

Great job restoring that speaker it sounds great. A lot of tedious work goes into that rpair but it would seem you are equal to the task.

Very nice work David! I tried once to replace a suspension in a Philco, the new ones do present a problem with clearance! I didnt have the option of routing out mounting board.....Brilliant how you routed that and made it work.....I had to turn the volume down when you played it! Sounded very nice!!!! Take Care--Larry

You can invert the speaker surround too to make the bulbous bit in the speaker, many vintage japanese speakers were like this to allow closer mounting

Hi David, back in the day when I re-coned JBL P.A speakers and the like, we use to source cones, voice coils etc from Queensland Speaker Repairs if my memory serves me correctly. They would also supply the appropriate adhesives and shims to centre the voice coil. Probably more expensive than eBay/China, but the owner knew his stuff and we were always supplied kits that fitted within days.

When you're at the stage of having nothing to lose but you want to retain as much originality as possible, you can't really do better than this. Looks original but very clean from the back and what it looks like from the front is neither here nor there bacause of course it can't be seen with the radio assembled in it's case. This radio needs nothing doing for a very long time now, it'll probably be around 100 years old before it's ready for the next overhaul!

I’ve watched Shango066 do this before. Original speakers need the treatment. There is also speaker 🔊 reconing glue to cover all of the speaker 🔊 paper 📝 with, such as if the speaker cone is punctured or torn. If you’ve ever had a problem with a raspy sounding speaker, and it’s binding, you probably have dirt between the speaker coil and the magnet, or a damaged speaker coil, which is binding and rubbing against the magnet. If a speaker is damaged on the outside edge, this can lead to buzzing. Speaker reconing glue can work for this, even if the speaker cone is severely deteriorated. Makes it sound like brand new. The only time to replace a speaker is if it is beyond all methods of being able to save it. Often, new speakers are not made to the specs of the original ones, and fitting it in the radio can present a challenge. I’ve seen this with Shango066 and Radiotvphononut. I hate to replace original parts, since this often takes away from the item being original. Speakers must be an exception, since they are usually hidden behind a speaker cloth.

Another beautiful job David, but as you spend so much effort and time renovating these radio sets, you should design a sticker of your own to put on the back of the chassis of these radio's, ( This Radio was refurbished by David Tipton and make so you write the date in, So then in future years people will know who did it, best regards Barry

sika contact adhesive , not seen that but i use seka flex to fix punctured washing mchine drums, brilliant products, like new speaker to , brilliant

Hi David - just came across this one today - so have watched all 3.5 parts at once. A job that seemed to have you rather taxed on a number of occasions. Interesting and efficient speaker repair - I used to use a fairly crude system for repairs to old speaker cones that had holes in them using tissue paper and glue which I built up in layers. I'm not to sure about the thinly veiled references to NZ radios that do not even have circuit diagrams... :)

When you glue the rubber to the cone you shouldn't leave the glue to dry as it is required, as in this application that is not necessary, it will stick good enough. For the outer side of the rubber, just roll it outwards, the bump on the rubber ring should keep it in place, then use the same type of adhesive that you used on the cone but this time let it dry as required by the glue manufacturer. You should work the glued parts with your hands to assure firm bond. Also I would vacuum the space where coil sits. When I was a kid I used to repair speakers, I wish I had RU-vid then. I really enjoy you videos, keep em coming.

Hi Dave I know you did this last year .Hopefully this will help future cones...Rubber cement as you found out wil melt the surround...I have done several speakers and the glue to use is Aleene's original Tacky Glue.. Will not melt surround and as stated its tacky..This glue is the recomended glue for speaker surround repairs...Hope this helped but being a year late ..Be well keep up the great work.. Paul

I have used these sort of surrounds to fix 2 pairs of Optimus 650 10" 3 way and the 1977 vintage no name Foster 8" speakers Dad bought for his first HiFi setup, I used to collect Rola speakers since I was 11, my first was the 8H 3.5 ohm late 60's build back in '83, I later discovered Mike's TV service at Royal Pk who had loose speakers hanging on a 4 spoke hook board turnstile they ripped out of old stuff, prices from $2 and they told me Robbies in Queenstown have lots of Rolas (Adelaide)

I just found your channel. That. was a great way to do the refoaming. , and masking of the cone for the sandblasting! As mentioned earlier, PVA glue will give you more work time. Also, where did you get the surrounds? I can find them here in the States, but it seems like you had more sizes.

Very good. I've replaced foam surrounds on 15" woofers and I know what it's like to use contact cement.....no fun....it distorts the shape. The next one I did I used RTV clear silicone it didn't distort the foam and won't stick too quick so it's workable for awhile longer and had much better results and more fun

Looks and sounds brand new! Especially liked the speaker repair. I've seen that done before but I have a speaker from 1926 that needs a new cone. The cone is too ripped and narrow to replace with a modern equivalent. Do people press their own cones in this case? Seems like a lot of work for a one-off repair. BTW, Tubesandmore sells a product called Service Cement that's supposed to work well with speaker foam.

David Sir, i have a celestion speaker in old valve radio having some holes on it. Can these holes be repaired? Pls suggest

You can paint the whole face of the cone with the contact cement because it remains flexible and will not distort the sound.

I really like what you do and how I can fix some of my old tube stuff. The only thing I don't understand is why do you use foam surround? It will hold 10 to 20 years and it is gone. I have a old JBL speakers that had foam from the early years and now with cloth surround they sound better and will not die before me now. Would like to hear why you use foam.

Lots of useful tips and information on this one and a nice finish at the end. Could have only been better if your wife caught you using her good pot, her good sewing scissors and washing a bakelite case in the dishwasher.

I once had to do a similar speaker, but clearance issues made me use the foam surround flipped over in reverse........dont think there was any real difference to the ear......but it gave me a lot more clearance.....the downside was I have to cut more of the original cone.....oh and I painted the whole cone with contact adhesive, which dries like rubber anyway.

Great repair job. I usually use the rubber surrounds as they tend to last far longer. I’ve done a few similar repairs when restoring 1970s-1980s Japanese radio cassettes (boomboxes) that I collect (hoard). Can’t do tuner repairs/realignments though. Are you interested? I have a Sharp GF-9090 from 1977 that needs a little tuner work. I’m at Mt Gravatt, Brisbane.

Aaahrr!! When you said "contact adhesive" I cringed. That stuff contains toluene (C6H5CH3) which means it destroys foam surround. Always use PVAC glue (like white "woodglue") It has a fair open time, which allows for correcting the position of the foam surround. BTW, if you first glue the ring to the frame, it already sits in the correct position. Then glueing the inner ring to the cone is much easier. Instead of putting a weight on top, use clothespins to clamp the surround.

Finish trim looks a little crooked.
