"Baby Face" Nelson was a real bank robber who apparently really was bipolar. John Goodman represents the Cyclops in The Odyssey. The Odyssey is an epic poem written by Homer between 1200 and 500 BCE in ancient Greece. It was the sequel to his epic poem, The Iliad, one of the oldest extant works of literature still read by modern audiences. The Iliad recounts the events of the Trojan War, while The Odyssey recounts Odysseus' 10 year journey home after the fall of Troy. Both tales draw heavily from ancient Greek mythology. Mythical creatures and Olympian gods were involved. I suppose there could be many movies. There’s Ulysses (1954) and The Oddysey (1997). There’s also the 2004 movie, Troy, which doesn’t involve the gods. It would be more from The Iliad than The Odyssey. I haven’t seen any of them, so can’t really make any recommendations. Hey, man, Giraffe had reach.

Tommy is based of a real person named Robert Johnson, he's in the forever 27 club and the legend is he couldn't play guitar for nothing then all of a sudden became amazing and the legend of him selling his soul at the crossroads was born
@Mauther
@Mauther 5 месяцев назад
Actually, Tommy is based on Tommy Johnson (no relation) who originally had the infernal deal.. The story was misattributed to Robert Johnson because writers confused them based on their names and the lack of original records. Also Robert makes a better story. Tommy only made 3 recordings over his life but had a long career dyeing at the age of 60. Robby came in and only had a much shorter career (effectively 7 years). Both told stories about how they got their ability through a deal with the Devil both had songs that had supernatural themes, but we actually have recordings of Robert Johnson's like "Hellhound on my Trail" and "Me and the Devil Blues." Also, Robert dies about the time he was invited to play Carnegie Hall, fulfilling the devil's bargain. Just a better story. But many early blues musicians adopted or actively spread myths about supernatural origins. Ike Zimmeman, Robert's mentor, supposedly practiced in a cemetery at night, the only placed he could practice without disturbing people at night. That grew into him bargaining with Lucifer in the graveyard.

This is my favorite Coen Brother movie. I love the soundtrack, which won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2001. It really surprised everyone when an album of old-timey music beat out albums by India Arie, Outkast, U2, and Bob Dylan to win Album of the Year. George "Baby Face" Nelson was a real gangster in the 1930s, at one point the FBI's Public Enemy #1. Tommy Johnson was a reference to bluesman Robert Johnson, a below average blues guitarist of the 1930s who, legend has it, went to the crossroads at midnight and sold his soul to the devil, thereafter becoming a very talented and successful blues guitarist until his death in 1938. He recorded a song called Cross Road Blues about the event. The band Cream, with Eric Clapton, had a hit in the 60s with their version, called Crossroads.

Fun fact: some Scandinavian countries don't add prison time for people who escape custody. My hair! The soundtrack of O Brother, Where Art Thou? became a top-selling CD. Bluegrass and folk music fans especially love it. The title "O Brother. Where Art Thou?" comes from the movie Sullivan's Travels (1941), in which the title character was a filmmaker who wanted to make a movie with that name. He never got it done, so the Coen Brothers finished it for him. There really was a blues guitarist named Tommy Johnson whom people believed got his talent by selling his soul to the devil at the crossroads. Over time, the legend was transferred to Robert Johnson, probably because he was more famous. There also really was a bank robber called Baby Face Nelson who was also known as George (though his real name was Lester Joseph Gillis). Nelson was a partner of John Dillinger. A lot of criminals in the depression era had wild nicknames, like Scarface, Pretty Boy Floyd, Machine Gun Kelly, and Bugs Moran. My favorite is Creepy Karpis. The scene at where they look out from behind the bushes at the Klan rally is a reference to the scene in The Wizard of Oz where Scarecrow, Tin Man, and The Cowardly Lion see the guards at the witch's castle. And the scene where they bring the prisoners into the movie theater is a reference to a similar scene in Sullivan's Travels. They literally ran Homer Stokes out of town on a rail.

It's always so weird to hear the names of place in a movie you've always heard of or been to nearby. Yazoo City, Tishomingo, and Itta Bena are real towns in Mississippi. Baby Face Nelson was a real bank robber but I don't think he ever hit a bank in Mississippi. It was actually Robert Johnson that sold his soul at the crossroads outside Clarksdale. I guess they couldn't get the rights to his name. Sirens, Cyclops the blind seer (Tiresias) this is actually The Odyssey. Parts of this were actually filmed in Mississippi. And if rumors are to be believed Clooney hooked up with two local hoochies in a hot tub at the Hilton on Countyline Road in Jackson.

Such a great movie. The scene where they rescue Tommy is a shout out to the scene in the Wizard of Oz when the Tin Man, Lion & Scarecrow saved Dorothy from the Witch's castle. They copied the exact movements from the Oz characters, from the way they sunk down behind the rocks & the way they walked forward behind the shields dressed as the enemy. It's identical and brilliant. You guys are always a blast!

They guy they met in the crossroads is a true story as well, Robert Johnson, infamously he sold his soul so he could play the guitar..He was known as the best guitar player in the world..His skill has inspired some of the most famous musicians today.

Among other things this pretty much single handedly revitalized Bluegrass as a form of music, there were concerts with the performers of the songs from the soundtrack

During one point a couple of friends were supposed to come over to my place. They were running two hours late and didnt answer their phones, and it was worrying me. Finally they show up and i walk out, relieved, asking, "the hel took you guys so long?" One of them piped up and said, "well we got banished from Woolsworth..." Then he turned ro the other and asked "I dont know, Everett, was it just the one branch, or all of 'em?" All was forgiven. They had spent the last two hours rewatching O' Brother Where Art Thou, refusing to pick up their phones because they were too engrossed in the film

Colony’s aunt Rosemary was a famous vocalist and he tells a funny story of thinking he could sing because a few of his relatives could. He got in the booth for this movie and saw everyone faces 😂 realized he couldn’t. ☮️

I was really pleased to see this when looking for something to watch. Been really missing my dad (we lost him just before Christmas 2022) and he really loved this film too, and quoted it often. So watching it back again makes me think of him and laugh 🥰

Clan horses. The horses dressed as clan members were also spared... As were the guards' horses standing over the chain gangs... The two most recommended film adaptions of the Odyssey are: -"Ulysses" (1954) starring Kirk Douglas -"The Odyssey" (1997), a 2-part Canadian TV mini-series
