This version of O Canada was arranged by Vic Vogel for the 1976 Summer Olympics held in Montreal.
The 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics, also known as the Games of the XXI Olympiad, were held in Montreal, Quebec, Canada from July 17 to August 1, 1976. These Olympic Games were notable for several reasons. Firstly, they marked the first time that the Olympic Games were held in Canada. Secondly, they were the first Summer Olympics to be held after the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, which were marred by a terrorist attack in which 11 members of the Israeli Olympic team were taken hostage and killed.
As a result, security was a major concern at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, and organizers took extra precautions to ensure the safety of the athletes and spectators. Despite these concerns, the games went on without incident and were considered to be a major success.
One of the standout moments from these Olympics was when the gymnast Nadia Comăneci from Romania became the first gymnast to ever score a perfect 10 in an Olympic event. This moment was a significant achievement and helped to raise the profile of gymnastics as a sport. Comăneci went on to win three gold medals, a silver and a bronze medal, becoming the most decorated gymnast of the competition, who this time was under 14 years old.
Another notable aspect of these games was the boycott by African nations. A total of 25 countries, most of them from Africa, boycotted the 1976 Montreal Olympics to protest the International Olympic Committee's decision to allow New Zealand to compete despite their rugby team's recent tour of apartheid South Africa. As a result, several events, including the men's 400 meters, were missing notable athletes and several Olympic records were not challenged.
Additionally, the 1976 Montreal Olympics marked the last time that the Olympic Games were held on a four-year cycle. Starting with the 1980 Olympics, the games were moved to a four-year cycle, but with a two-year offset from the Summer and Winter Games, in order to reduce the number of years between the games which in turn was expected to increase the interest.
