About 30 years ago, I went to a Carol service at St Nicholas Church in the centre of Newbury. This was the last Carol in the service. They have a fabulous organ there and all the stops were pulled out for the last verse. It impressed me enormously. You could feel the sound go through you. You felt it. This has to be my favourite Carol.
In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic crisis, This beautiful advent hymn brings us a message of hope and redemption. The pandemic itself may have ruined certain holidays like Christmas but it won’t stop us from celebrating Christmas.
O come, O come, Emmanuel! Redeem thy captive Israel That into exile drear is gone, Far from the face of God's dear Son. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel. O come, thou Branch of Jesse! draw The quarry from the lion's claw; From the dread caverns of the grave, From nether hell, thy people save. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel. O come, O come, thou Dayspring bright! Pour on our souls thy healing light; Dispel the long night's lingering gloom, And pierce the shadows of the tomb. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel. O Come, thou Lord of David’s Key! The royal door fling wide and free; Safeguard for us the heavenward road, And bar the way to death's abode. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel. O come, O come, Adonai, Who in thy glorious majesty From that high mountain clothed in awe, Gavest thy folk the elder Law. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel.
Some revamped versions of the Lord's Prayer leave out Deliver us from evil. Many hymns have been bowderdized in hymnbooks to leave out prayers for protection, like Martin Luther's A Mighty Fortress is Our God. The freemasons are trying to put the image of the beast in Christians' hearts. Read old sermons and try to find old hymnbooks in used bookstores.
I entered boarding school at age 14 in 1971. I was taught organ and played all four years. This was one of the hymns we used for advent. Those memories still are just as fresh now as they were nearly 50 years back - and the happiness is still a solace to me.
I am much younger than you both, as I was born in 1970. Blessed with perfect pitch and having a very good memory for tunes, I sing alto in a church choir. This hymn is in E minor. Did you sing in four part harmony and was there a Picardy Third (final chord is major) at the end? That would mean a G# to finish.
O come, O come, Emmanuel And ransom captive Israel That mourns in lonely exile here Until the Son of God appear Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel.
Papa, oompie, nana, grampy,to all my family lost too early to cancer, and my baby girl amber georgina, taken at 6 months, this would have been your 6th xmas,we love u and miss you, forever in our hearts
Löysin tämän laulun ranskalaisesta tv-sarjasta Tapahtukoon sinun tahtosi. Se jäi vaikuttamaan voimakkaasti. Ja taas näin Joulun alla kuuntelen eri versioita. Eniten pidän kuorojen laulamista.
This is at St Edmundsbury Cathedral, isn't it.....this has to be before the organ case was fixed on....but this is a wonderful rendition of this classic carol...
I sing alto in a church choir and know that the key is E minor. Listen out for the triumphant ending of the last chord in E major. This is a Picardy Third because of the G#!
I don't care for it, but its consoling effect would appeal to many. Depends on one's response to the music, emotional or analytical, and one's present mood. On second thoughts, I love it!
I think it kinda brightens the tone of the music; since it comes at the end (well that's the only appropriate place it could've been placed) I don't think it's that much of a deal.
❓❓Are you trusting in your good deeds/works/merits to obtain salvation? Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves...... 2 Corinthians 13:5 “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:” Hebrews 9:27 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” Romans 3:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.
