I got very limited permission to climb onto a rooftop right next to Runway 22-Left ( RWY 22L / Runway 2-2-Left ) at Chicago's O'Hare International / Int'l Airport ( ICAO : KORD / IATA : ORD ) and shoot about an hour's worth of departures rolling off the only diagonal runway that is still frequently used for departures ( 32L is sometimes used from intersection Tango-10 and 4L will sometimes be used, as well, both only as overflow departure runways, 32L/T10 in West Flow, and 4L in East Flow ). Unfortunately, I couldn't stay long because of my agreement with the property manager to be up there, and because I was between shifts between both my jobs.
Because the departures were lining up and quickly rolling out, I wasn't able to pull everyone's flight numbers. I also didn't have my scanner with me that day, so I only managed to catch a few of the flight numbers. After the first few departures, it became increasingly difficult to look at FlightRadar 24 on my phone and then go to my camera to record a roll-out, and then back to the phone.
1. AAL1087 / AA1087 - ORD → SJD / N962NN
2. FFT40 / F940 - ORD → PUJ / N210FR
3. ENY3322 / MQ3322 - ORD → PIA / N615AE
4. UAL359 / UA359 - ORD → MEX / N419UA
The rest of the flights, I was only able to pull the registration / tail number

My parents think I’m strange because of my obsession with jet airliners. One thing that gets them is that I listen to this video everytime I’m on a road trip.

I've been to O'Hare recently, and I've actually never seen jumbo-jets. I'm very used to see this small-scaled Southwest Planes flying around, so when we wen't up to O'Hare, I was so amazed at the size of these things. Truly amazing machines.

Yeah, we sure do get our fair share of widebodies. Probably not as many as say LAX or JFK, but we are lucky to get as many 767s, 777s, 787s, 747s, A330s, & A340s as we do. We're losing 747s every day, but the cargo companies keep flying them in, which is always nice.

O'Hare gets LOTS of widebodies. Plenty of 777s, 767s, and 787s. Even some 747-8F jumbo-freighters. The 747-8 is probably the biggest airliner you're gonna get at O'Hare, since the only bigger airliner, the A380, is exclusive to Europe and Asia.

I was at the Hilton in O'Hare where you can see the runway there where a lot of 757s

AT 7:45 There must have been a huge gust to rock the CRJ that much... but good job for the quick reaction time and immediate correction. nice video

Absolutely one of the best plane-spotting vids. I have seen Jose. Excellent view, great sound, no obstructions and best of all , no commentary. Hope you can get back up on the roof again sometime. Thank you.

Great job getting the roof access and holding your shots nice and steady. Too bad 22L is one of the shortest runways and therefore don't have "heavies" taking off on it. If you have access to the roof again, may I suggest that you get videos of East-West runways like 10C-28C, 10L-28R, or even 10R-28L for nearly straight on views of landings or takeoffs Thanks and well done!!!

Huge thanks for your hard work, and for recording this 20 minute video. I hope that we can see more video's from this location. Super Huge Like!

This is incredible. This is like the old day back in the 90's where you could sit for hours in an airport parking lot before police kindly asked you to leave.

Ahhh, yes. That's how I started plane spotting. My parents would take us along Irving Park, I think it was before these warehouses got built and before the elevated road along the fence was built that blocks the view. Thank you for watching!

Kinda surprised that there was only one wide-body in all of those takeoffs.
@ChicagoAirportSpotter
@ChicagoAirportSpotter 8 лет назад
+jamesthemaniac 22L doesn't really ever get widebodies for departure OR landing unless the winds are basically head-on 2-2-0 or 0-4-0. 767's and empty MD-11's/DC-10's frequently depart off of there in the early mornings, though.
@AccessAir
@AccessAir 6 лет назад
Also, there aren't any if at all domestic widebodies flying anymore. Back in the day UA and AA used to launch DC10s off of 22L. TWA used to launch L1011s off of it as well. We now live in a world of narrowbodies and regional jets, sadly.

Carlos Phillips Between 10 PM and 5 AM on a regular day without any bad weather, it's pretty quiet...of course, the cargo guys are going full-throttle all night long, as well as the aircraft maintenance guys, and all the overnight Mexico flights (AeroMexico, VivaAerobus, Volaris, & Interjet)

@ChicagoAirportSpotter
@ChicagoAirportSpotter 8 лет назад
+Richard Fleer I used to work in that building. Our company moved out and some major renovation work was underway and the access to the roof was open, so I asked for permission to go upstairs for a bit. Turned into about an hour, it was great, haha. Thank you for watching!

Where do you spot from?
@ChicagoAirportSpotter
@ChicagoAirportSpotter 8 лет назад
In general? All over the place from inside and outside the fence...for this video? Just outside the perimeter fence on the rooftop of one of the warehouses adjacent to RWY 4R/22L.
@varigdc10
@varigdc10 8 лет назад
Do people still pull over on Irving Park just west of Manheim to see the take offs, I used to do that many moons ago in the 80's?
@ChicagoAirportSpotter
@ChicagoAirportSpotter 8 лет назад
+varigdc10 From time to time, you see people do that, but the police will come and kick them away very quickly, unless they're members of our ORD Airport Watch spotting group. A road was built in the 90's along Irving Park, but inside the airport fence, that almost blocks all view of the airport. Some cargo warehouses were built at the corner of Mannheim and Irving, too.

Rooftop of one of the Warehouses along the runway. Well, there's a fence between the parking lots at the rear of the warehouses and plenty of grass in between, but no problem with a zoom lens.
