I know quite a bit about opera and I thoroughly enjoyed your synopsis of Gianni Schicchi. And, you pronounced it correctly, which most people don't. My only tiny little criticism... Gianni Schicchi is an early 20th century opera, not 19th century. Please keep posting. I've subscribed.
Finished watching. Really nice encapsulation of the opera. Makes me want to watch it. Would be great if you provided a link or three to versions of Gianni Schicchi and/or just O Mio Babbino Caro that you like.
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed the breakdown. The of ‘O Mio Babbino Caro’ that I enjoy most is within the video with Ailyn Pérez singing. There is always the iconic Maria Callas, Renée Fleming, and almost any soprano you’ve ever heard of because every soprano has definitely sung it. It really comes down to personal preference. 🙏🏾✨💛
I am not African American. I appreciate the the discussion because I have never been an opera fan, but partly because I have never taken the time to learn about it. I was fortunate to learn about classical music in school but there was never a discussion about opera in depth. My first work that I learned was Peer Gynt Suite In the Halls of the Mountain King by Edvard Grieg in 7th grade. But again, this is great information and I appreciate your teaching.
Some time, check out Leontyne Price's final performance at the Met of O Patria Mia. She refuses to cry - she pulls herself up like the Queen she was. I cry every time i watch it.
This is fun, so far. Thanks! Only 1/3 the way through, but just wanted to pause to let you know that "centuries" are one number ahead of the first numbers of the date. So, we are not in the 20th century now but the 21st century. That's because the first century after (what was then calculated to be) the birth of Christ -- i.e., the years 0 - 99 - were the "first century". So, as you can tell, by the time they were in the 100s, it was the 2nd century. So.... Gianni Schicchi, written in 1917-1918, was an early 20th-century opera. Kinda counter-intuitive, but that's the way it works.
Yes thank you for keeping me honest. It was a slip of the tongue that I didn’t catch in my editing process. Sometimes my mind gets so overwhelmed by all the information that brain farts like this happen. I appreciate you for watching and I look forward to serving more videos! 🙏🏾✨💛
oops, tiny error in your video: "early 19th century opera"... it's actually an early 20th century opera ;-) 1917-1918 is quite certainly in the 20th century😀 My favourite of Il Trittico is Suor Angelica. Hopefully one day soon we'll have the pleasure of one of your highly instructive videos on that little masterpiece! It's like the 3rd act of an opera with no 1st and 2nd act. One interesting detail is that Gianni is the only "comedy" that Puccini wrote. No one technically dies in it, there is no "tragedy". Even the one dramatic "tragic" aria (O Mio Babbino Caro) is more of a petulant adolescent "if I don't get my way I'll hold my breath!" (Jumping from the Ponte Vecchio wouldn't be all that dramatic, it's about 6 feet off the water!)
