Part 1 of 3
"Making the Band" was an ABC/MTV reality television series created by Lou Pearlman, the man responsible for the formation of the Backstreet Boys and the early management of *NSYNC. It started on March 25, 2000 on ABC. Pearlman embarked on a nationwide talent search, cutting auditions in eight cities down to 25 young men, and eventually eight finalists. These eight young men would, as the premise for a new ABC reality show, compete for five spots in Pearlman's newest boy band creation named "O-Town", to be signed to his record label, Transcontinental Records. The five guys who became O-Town were: Ashley Parker Angel, Jacob Underwood, Dan Miller, Erik-Michael Estrada andTrevor Penick.

Watching this as I am older, it is strange but very cool. But honestly, the fact Ikaika was still chosen after he was gone for weeks, still perplexes me. I wonder if there was something else going on with all that.

There actually was - Lou Pearlman saw Ikaika as the vulnerable one of the group and targeted him as his pet sex project. This is (allegedly) true, not making it up. It's apparently the real reason Ikaika left after making the cut.

It could've been a racial thing too. Mike was Black and Bryan was Asian, not the typical white/hispanic boy band. I know that Ikaika was half Hawaiian, but he even said himself that he looks white on the show. Even when Ikaika left, it should've been Mike or Bryan joining since they were a part of the final 7 but instead, they bring in someone from the top 25

And after all of that 2 weeks after taking 1 of the 5 spots he left. People still all these years later talk crap about Jacob and defend what ikaika did. He took a spot from one of the 2 that didn't get chosen and Jacob ended up being right all along. Ikaika was never committed to the group.

@@jaec4342 I couldn't agree more regarding the racial thing. It was originally 8 but then that one white guy quit. So that left you with 7 guys who are white except, ikakia who had mixed asian/hawaiian ancestors but looked white, Trevor who was half black but looked white as well and handsome, bryan who is full asian and then the full black guy. I think Lou knew that the black and asian guy would never make it. Once ikakia quit they didn't call the black or asian guy to fill his spot.
