Certainly the repair you did was more professional than I would have done. It's also the kind of professional repair that withstands the criticism of a callback or second opinion that customers always hate. And, as you say, you don't know if that sensor is even good since it hasn't been working for a while (in fact at that point you wouldn't necessarily know the cat is working, either). I think I must be a farmer at heart. On an old beater truck with one bad segment of wire, I would have been inclined to do a farmer repair and fix the wire. I think it is justifiable to treat yourself differently than you would a customer, because your labor is 'free' and you don't worry so much about reputation and callbacks, etc (except what keyboard critics say on RU-vid). The last OEM O2 sensor I bought was $100, and the old one on your car seems to be good. If anybody looked underneath, they would roll their eyes at two extra connectors and a short stretch of wire, crimped or soldered and shrink wrapped, and tied with a quick tie with an extra loop to hold it out of the way and to allow easier future removal and repair. Removal in the future would be a little more time consuming, but on this truck if the exhaust is good you probably won't ever go back. For a downstream sensor that contributes very little to fuel mileage it would practically be just as good. Realistically, cars of this vintage don't tend to last more than a few years. With the extra money I saved I'd buy another tool, ha ha. Great video, Will, and I loved that home made tool.
@robinsonsauto
@robinsonsauto 6 лет назад
spelunkerd in all honesty your are 100% right. it would be just fine doing as you mentioned. Cut splice and be on your way. Most likely the sensor is ok. If it's a little laggy even better lol would help keep the inefficient cat code from popping up 😉 fingers crossed so far it hasn't. Thanks for sharing your feedback

i really got a lot out of this video. I was really impressed with being able to see the schematic beside the actual job. I wish more demos were done in this manner, it eliminates the guess work. I got a p0053 this afternoon , hopefully I will be able to isolate the cause. thanks for a great instructional video.

I’m a subscriber going forward. I’ve replaced all three O2 sensors and keep getting a heater error. Thanks for this video as the problem you’ve identified is what I suspected, a bad connection. Btw, and for non-English speaking viewers, “crustys” while a highly accurate term is also referred to as corrosion. I noted the road salt coating on the undercarriage. Now if I only had a lift...

This helped me quite a bit. Thanks! I replaced all 3 - O2 sensors on my 00 Blazer and the still the not able to pass smog inspection today due to O2 sensor heater issue at same location you covered. I watched this and found there are traces of the dirt and “green crustiest” with pin in tact on my old sensor. Will inspect the harness in the morn & clean / repair as needed. Thanks again!

I have worked with Connectors of all types over the years in the Electronics Trade and I can say from my experience your Troubleshooting and especially the Repair of the Corroded Pin is 100% Thorough and Complete! Most DIY'rs would have Cut & Spliced on a New Connector. I NEVER like doing that if I can help it because it adds another layer of potential problems from Vibration Damage, Water Damage, Shorting, etc. ALL of your Steps should be followed IMHO. If one does not have access to Voltage, Ohms or Current Meter/s it's okay to skip those Steps. It'll Work or it Won't.

At 5.00 it looks as if the pin has been pushed back in the connector housing; at 5.41 you can see the crimp end of the pin is sticking out of the back of the housing. Bearing in mind the heater circuit showed continuity, it might have been possible to re-seat the pin, clean up the female connector and have a "no parts required" repair.

@tonyz2897
@tonyz2897 6 лет назад
I caught that too. You could see the seal around the wire had been pushed out the back of the connector by the pin. Likely where the moisture entered that caused the corrosion.

Got a 99 s10 2.2. Have codes p0134 & p0141. Replace both 02 sensors, took the code out with my scanner. Code came back🤬. Recently I unplug the downstream 02 sensor and use my voltage tool & check all 4 pins. Only one pin made the light come on my tool. Haven't check the 1st one. Also I think I got 2 of the same 02 sensors. Their either both downstream or both upstream. I didn't know the difference back then.

Off topic but wondering... Did replace my front/rear differentials before the snow hit. Had to replace then both because I couldn't find a GU6 rear axle, only GT4's. Old axle was growling. At first thought it was pinion bearing but turned out to be the axle shaft bearings. Would have just replaced bearings but the bearings were so bad they ate a groove into the axle shafts about 1/8" deep on passenger shaft and 1/4" on driver side. Before my speedometer was off by 5 MPH (reading fast) with stock tires.. Now my speedometer is off by even more and the faster I drive the more it's off. Talked to the previous owner and he said he replaced the transmission... Could the different trans with a different gear ratio be the reason the speedometer was off? If I got the speed sensor off of a truck/SUV with a GT4 axle would that fix the speedometer issue? I went to dealership and they told me they couldn't re-calibrate the the speed with the computer because it's a Canadian truck... That makes no sense to me because the Odometer has KPH and MPH.
@robinsonsauto

Ok question. Why not cut the harnesses, splice, solder the wires and when the time comes to replace an 02 sensor you just cut it out? Isn't it the same concept with a car radio, speaker. If the deck or speakers fail. You rip em out. Seems overly complicated. Maybe I need to go to electrical engineering school idk.

Tired of this issue with my 1998 GMC Sierra K1500 pickup 5.7L. From the looks of it whoever replaced the cat added a 2' pipe after the crossover, instead of just installing the cat. The result is there is nearly 5' of pipe between the engine and the cat. By the time the gasses get to the cat to properly chemically change the gasses. As a result the Oxy sensors after the cat are essentially reading the same exhaust as the exhaust manifold Oxy sensors. The result, crappy gas milage and not as much power as there should be.... and the Oxy sensors are black as tar within a week. I love it when they pull the light bulb on the dash cluster cus they think it'll pass emissions... I got around emissions last autumn by clearing the CEL and driving directly to the shop. With a 1998 car/truck in NY you can get away with 3 incomplete sensors.
