Yeah I get ya, I mostly do platformers as well

Basically it's an endless gantlet of enemies to fight and loot to collect to get stronger, and by the end of each world there's a boss you have to fight to progress, but anytime you die you start from the beginning losing all the loot and weapons starting back where you originally started, there's usually an end challenge like a final boss you have to reach but they're relatively hard since you have to do it in one run, they're not really my cup of tea so I'm not too experienced on them. Someone might put it better than me but that's my definition of it. Hope that helped 😊
