Oakland A's THE BUILDING OF MT. DAVIS. May 11, 1996

There is a lot of significance to this video. First, it was me taking my 10 year old son to his first A's game. My Dad took me to my first A's game also when I was 10, on the same date, May 11, 1968. So, here we are, me and my son, 28 years after my date did the same with me. Meanwhile, the building of Mt. Davis was going on, during the game. Little did I know then how horrible this would be for the Oakland A's yard and the quality of what was a great ballpark. This is why I am not a Raiders fan or an NFL fan anymore. This should not have happened. However, this day was a grand day, more me and my son.

Raiders ruined a great ballpark. hell of a job for those construction workers though. they got to watch baseball while they worked!

This is awesome footage! The 90s seem ancient at this point. I grew up watching my Pirates at Three Rivers Stadium but I went to the Oakland Coliseum once and that was in July of 1996 and I was 12 at the time. The A’s played the Orioles and “The Macarena” was the highlight of the night. Mt. Davis looked steep!

@@tizzdellThe Raiders are Oakland's "rooted" team the Coliseum was built for us not baseball or basketball. The Warriors are from Philadelphia/San Francisco and the A's from Kansas city. Oakland should have kicked out the A's and priority football

@sirchi8731 Are you a fan? If so that's a cold blooded assessment of the A's as opposed to the raiders and warriors. The warriors played at the coliseum / oracle arena for 48 seasons. The A's brought more success to oakland in a short period of time than the raiders. Between 1967 and 1977 the raiders went to the AFL/AFC championship game 9 times and only made it to two superbowls during that span. The early success of the oakland athletics is second to only the new york yankees. Five ALCS appearances in the first 8 years between 1968 and 1975. Which included 3 consecutive world series championships. Please have a heart man. Al Davis is the blame for everything that went wrong with the coliseum. He couldn't get with he wanted in los angeles, do he returned to oakland and messed up a beautiful multi purpose stadium.

@@johnwalker4329 football is king. Raiders will always be more popular then the A's. The Coliseum was built in 1966 for the Raiders..meanwhile the A's was in Kansas city 😂😂

Great upload. A couple of things I noticed: Roy Steele as the PA announcer; 2:35 the vendor selling pretzels is still vending at games as of 2019; All of the orange seats hadn't been replaced; 11:25 the runner looked safe; 11:50 Banjo Man still makes his rounds today;

Love hearing Roy Steele's voice again. It wasn't just that though, the noise in the background is so reminiscent of fun days at the ballpark. Vendors, prop planes flying over, etc. Cool thing is, I worked for the A's in 1997 as my internship. I did camera work, watched out of town games, video booth, etc. Everything for the Jumbotron!

I'm not an A's or Raiders fan, but it bugs me how they leave Mount Davis covered with tarp. I mean, if you're going to add extra seats to your stadium, _use them!_

The Raiders returned to Oakland after 15 years and bullied the city/county to add suites and that monstrosity of seating above the suites lovingly known as Mt. Davis. A's never wanted it because you can't see the game. Raider fans hated the view and the climb.
@sn0tszn631
@sn0tszn631 4 года назад
I understand that it my look ugly with the tarp on it but they use Mt Davis for special events like a big Raiders game or the bay bridge Giants vs A's series. I know this because i'm a Giants and A's fan. But now the Raiders are moving to Las Vegas and Mt Davis will be mainly used for the A's till they move out
@Zguzman5023

You can't use them, its such a terrible seat that no one wants to sit up there causing the games to blackout. When they put the tarp on they starting selling out every game again and people could actually watch them on TV

The mix of green and orange seats is very strange. Not to sound like a RU-vid ad, but go to my page if you want to see a video about the different forms of the Oakland Coliseum, including its pre-renovation look.

The Giambino was hitting third and Big Mac at cleanup. This was when the A’s had good players but couldn’t put it all together. Then they got the opposite problem, they had to get cheap players and were better managed but never got over the hump. Love the Orange baseball, Charlie O really did love the fans (allegedly more than he did the players if you ask the players lol) he thought the Orange ball would be better for night games. He also scheduled more night games so working people could attend.

The city wanted the Raiders back. Since Al Davis is cheap I believe the only way the city could get him to agree to return the team is if the Coliseum added 20K seats to the stadium.

Crazy to realize this team finished in third at 78-84. They wouldn't make the postseason until 2000, which started 4 straight playoff appearances including money ball winning 103 games in 2001and 102 wins in 2002.

Last year I took my 10 year old grandson to our first game together, and he's in Seattle WA, so we saw the A's at Safeco/Seattle.
