"Crime seems to be the only thing working in the city." Decriminalize crime and arrest police for doing their job and this is the outcome. I just hope a lot of the residents of Oakland don't move 40 miles east to my part of town.

My daughter worked at the Hagenberger Black-bear Restaurant and got held up many times. Near the Shell Gas station there was homeless encampment of abandoned trailers and cars which was part of the decline. The Blackbear is a franchise and the franchise owner ended up closing . I have great memories of eating at the Haganberger Blackbear Restaurant - sorry to hear about the troubles.

My family ran an auto repair shop on the south side of the coliseum for years and saw great growth during our time there… When the pandemic arrived, it was the beginning of the end for that area…

"optimism and visionaries" is what got Oakland into this problem in the first place. Having morals and treating criminals tough would be more effective but all the good people have already left.
Politicians are at fault but the biggest perpetrator of the downfall of O town is its people. The PEOPLE that live there are the ones doing the stick ups and bipping and robbin, blame yourselves and your lack of accountability due to its racist if you call crime out, you voted for it
Everyone loves to cry about the politicians (yes they are weak virtuesignalers) but one fact remains and is never pointed out: THE CRIMINALS. The next mayor will do the same thing as the last 10 mayors. Virtue signal, be too scared to call out who the criminals are, that keeps the crime loop going. Oakland needs to stop being afraid to lockup its criminals, el salvadorian style. Theres a small minority of demographics that commit most of the crimes, stop letting them out and enforce the law.
Perhaps this area can be turned into a national monument that honors diversity. People of every color have built Oakland and call it home. Prominent leaders in civil rights, government, art, and industry have come from the area. The Hegenberger corridor can be rebuilt as a beautiful pedestrian and bicycle park, and amphitheaters can be spaced throughout for live performances. Sculptures done by local artists can adorn the place as well.

Republicans were the ones who ushered in the "California Dream" back in the 70s and 80s. Back then Cali was the place to be. All the most dysfunctional and crime ridden parts within red states tend to be blue urban areas. The reverse is also true. In California, red and purple areas like Orange County or San Diego are far ahead of dumps like LA and much of the Bay Area.

You know, you are exactly right. Fighting for decades but can't fix it because they can't see what the problem is. I lived by Lake Merritt for a year and it was nice in the 70's. I don't think they can pull out of it.
Maybe residents will get tired of the crime and either do something about it or just keep being victims. Cops have a horribly complicated job and you protested your way out of them doing it. You want businesses back put criminals behind bars or under them.
Oakland has been a dump for at least 40 years, so don't lie about all this economic flourishing. The people of Oakland have to decide to change it, and actually do the things.

Man Oakland used to be a place I'd go to walk around. I even lived in the ghetto part. Wasnt so bad. Back in 2008-2010. Super sad. It's looking now like fruitvale and san leandro used to look back in the day.
What is really depressing is how high the property tax is in Oakland especially in light of how poor the services and schools are. Can't see how anyone would want to live there. Its like paying to live in a war zone. I do feel bad for the mayor though. They always pick a woman or a minority or both for the top job when things are terrible. When a smug entitled white guy doesn't want the job you know the organization has problems. This phenomenon is called the glass cliff as opposed to the glass or bamboo ceiling.

I was searching for information one day, I came across California reports on education. The report said 75% of black high school age boys read below grade level and many are considered functionally illiterate. I wonder why they keep voting for the candidate the teachers union endorse, considering they sons are being failed.
