Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao spoke publicly on Monday for the first time since FBI agents raided her home last week, declaring defiantly that she is innocent and that she won't step down from her post. Here is the full news conference.

The warrant just has the location they're searching and the things they're looking for. The warrant affidavit would list out the PC for the offense(s) and why they feel they would find evidence of it at her house. They often seal the affidavit initially, they'll have to share it later with the defense prior to trial.

I don't care much for her, and think there's good odds that she's got something to hide. However, we should give her the same benefit of the doubt anyone should receive prior to a court case and a conviction. If the voters want to recall her, it should be because of her actions (or lack thereof) so far in her duty as mayor, not because of these FBI actions. Later, if she's found guilty, there will be plenty of time to take the correct actions based on facts, not guesses.

I don't really like the Mayor either, but in fairness to the facts- I questioned some of the oddly-dressed petition canvassers at Lake Merritt and found that they had driven up from Los Angeles just to collect signatures to recall another city's mayor... It took a lot of questioning and they were totally evasive. Its odd no matter how anyone tries to explain it... So, I don't think Thao is wrong about the billionaire effort to oust her; but that does NOT mean she's doing a good job... Also a reminder that Thao was elected on rank-choice style voting... There are a lot of things wrong in Oakland; I don't think Sheng Thao has the perspective to succeed as mayor of Oakland. Its a tough job!

Illinois (I know...that's a different state, but it is in the US) got Governor Blagojevich (D) for "pay to play." The concept is not new. I'm not sure Mayor Thao is being mistreated...she might have simply made herself a big target.
