Wouldn't exactly recommend the most recent season of the anime, but the 3rei manga the season is adapted from is exactly what he was talking about with a darker Fate magical girl series (minus like one bathhouse scene). It's the portion of the manga Oath Under Snow was pulled from and the tone of it is mostly the same as OUS. Also Shirou's introduction is actually like Top 5 Shirou moments of all time good.

I'm glad someone else said it because it adds so much to both dynamics of Miyu and Julian. Also solidifying how departed and cold Kiritsugu is as he not only see Miyu as a tool but the moment he realizes she can't grant him that wish because of the earlier events he dismisses all concern for her. His entire character sinks another level of despair. Now his one possible chance gone and he has no clue what else to do.

Season 1 also has Illya and Miyu as magical girl versions of Mega Man, so yeah...

and yes, Sakura is still one of my favorites. I also love her in this film over any other version and I really wish she had more embodiments like this one.

Umm... what? Archer helps Shirou in FSN Heaven's Feel as well. He literally cuts off his arm so Shirou can live, and by using his arm he gains all of Archer's abilities. Don't dismiss HF just because you like Miyu more. In HF Sakura ends up killing hundreds of people, and Shirou still chooses to save her, because that's how much she means to him.

@@vicount3944 I like Sakura more than Miyu, but Archer helps Shirou from the very beggining here, unlike HF. I am not saying HF is better than OUS in 90% of the plot, but the relationship beetween Shiirou and Miyu is more genuine,that for sure.

Not really, Kaleid actually has a deep and complex story, it's much more than just gag fanservice manga. Especially the manga, as the manga has almost zero fanservice

HF Shirou is rejecting the idea of saving everyone in order to protect one person, whereas OUS Shirou is actively damning the world in order to save one person. HF Shirou can still be called a hero, but OUS Shirou is more like the villain of the story, and it's that aspect of it that I like. That Moral relativism is something I love to see a character explore, and I loved those aspects in the original FSN (Kiritsugu's wish vs. actions, Kirei's discussion with Shirou about the birth of AM, etc.) Also, I feel like the desire to protect your family is a bit more relatable than someone you're in love with. Romantic relationships might not last forever, but to a lot of people, familial bonds do. They're both awesome versions of the character, and both are equally good, but because of how much further this one takes Shirou as a character himself, and how it's almost like a mirrored image of UBW Shirou, It's probably my favorite.

I agree that Kalied has a lot of good points but that doesn't discredit his points for not liking it. Honestly, all the underaged fan service really does hurt the show which is disappointing because I genuinely it.

The manga is super toned down compared to the anime, I don't mind fanservice but the anime seriously goes overboard, it gets pretty uncomfortable to watch at times and the pace also drags a lot in anything but 3rei. His complaints are warranted, but yes, generalizing that Kaleid has nothing to offer but OUS is just not true. IMO a lot more people would have liked it if they went straight to the manga and skipped the anime.

I think Avalon only caused his obsession with swords. IIRC it even changed his Origin to "Sword". The Hero Complex comes from Kiritsugu saving him.

*Concerning his Elemental Affinity and Origin* During the fire, Shirou had to essentially kill himself in order to survive, to try and escape. If feeling pain caused him to stop, he had to stop feeling pain. If fear stopped him, he had to stop being afraid. This happened until at last he gave up even hope to take 1 more step. Then he laid down. Not to die, but to stop, because at this point he was essentially dead. Due to this empty state, when Avalon was implanted into him (and stayed with him for so long), it turned both his Elemental Affinity and Origin to "Sword", essentially turning him into an artificial Incarnation of a sword. And since swords aren't meant to be human, Shirou's perception of the world is "Distorted". *Sidenote* This is why Shirou is sooooo good at archery. The Japanese method of archery essentially entails the archer losing themselves and becoming the arrow. Seeing as the concept involves emptying oneself, you can imagine how good Shirou is at this. *Hero Complex Misconception* Shirou doesn't have a Hero's/Messiah Complex, nor does he have Survivor's Guilt. Both those things implies that he feels something when he saves people. He doesn't. He wants to be able to smile and feel as happy like Kiritsugu did when they first met, and thinks saving people will allow him to do so. Being as empty as he was at the time however, that... _did_ something to his perception of the world. To Shirou, saving people is the same a breathing. It's as fundamental to who he is as having a beating heart. He doesn't need to think, doesn't pause to evaluate, simply because it's not possible for him to comprehand any other course of action. Fire is hot, 1+1=2, and Shirou saves people. It's a fact of him, of who/what he is.

Him being more sharpened and relentless has to do moreso with how Kiritsugu at his prime raising him. Within this, no Fourth Holy Grail War and no Irisviel. He's very cold and doesn't show much warmth, treating his children as tools. In order for Shirou to have a happy childhood and dreams of heroism, the Magus Killer must be dead. The Core of Shirou Emiya is a pretty good video which talks more about this.

Shirou being darker than his other counterparts has more to do with Kiritsugu than Avalon/the lack of.

@@CMTechnica Nah, the man's right. The anime doesn't show a lot of Shirou's actual character. To anime only watchers, the personality difference between EMIYA (Archer) and Shirou is jarring, but to VN readers, it wasn't because we got to see Shirou's inner monologue. Shirou is actually a super sarcastic, snarky little ass. EMIYA is just a Shirou that speaks his mind. A lot of the times that he puts on a smile and agrees to do a favor, he is actually sassing the person in his head. The anime would have you believe that Shirou is a generic shounen protag; always happy and willing to help others like a good boy. The VN portrays Shirou as a tool given a human body and brain. He had to copy the mannerisms of others just to express himself and helps others even at a cost to himself, not because he is a good boy, but because he believes he has to make up for all the people he didn't save in the Fire of Fuyuki.

The 3rd season in the manga gets really interesting too, They really succeeded in creating a more tense atmosphere with just changes in the artstyle and design. Going from a "mediocre" style that suited the comedic and almost self aware tone with sprinkles of dark humour (Which, from the little clips that I've watched, The anime totally lacks) to arguably the best manga in terms of art that I've seen to date, The final confrontation between shirou and angelica in this manga puts to shame the movie version. Also, They introduce a degree of gray morality with some really interesting villains and a tone that really makes you wonder if it isn't just going to end up with everyone dying in the end, Going right back to the questions about justice and what a hero really is that featured in the original novel. In short, The manga is fucking amazing and the anime really fails to live up to it, especially with the bad animation and general design choices that don't adapt to the relatively dark tone of this new storyline

@@herivelton1973 agreed, The first 3 season all have great fight scene (S1E6、S2E5.6.9.10、S3E7.9.10) but due to lack of budget and time kaleid Season4(3rei) and the movie were kind let down of us manga reader (especially S4)

Agreed, Kaleid has some really kickass fights like vs the saber card, vs berserker card, and vs Her Violenceness Wielder of Fragarach and Deliverer of These Hands Bazett Mc Fraga in earlier seasons, and everything from when they go to the miyuverse onwards is awesome. But yeah the “fan service” is borderline criminal, though for better or worse you get used to it, not that you’ll grow to like it (I hope not) but you’ll become kind of indifferent nowadays it’s more like “finish the spit swap mana transfer already so we can get back to a cool fight”

Different genres, I mean you're comparing a Magical Girl show to a seinen so obviously there is a huge gap. Prisma Illya was just some fanservicy, magical girl show that you wouldn't need to take seriously, but of course the fans kept comparing it to the seinen series of Fate.

The manga is great in general. Anime is just an incredibly bad adaption that forces in more filler / lewd than what's actually in the manga.

Someone said they rechecked all the scenes with Miyu in them to see, and that it was when Julian came to get her and she fell down. They apparently flashed a bit, which makes me think this dude specifically looks for fan service so he can nitpick a series or movie on it, which would explain why he so vehemently seems to hate Kaleid. Cause it has fan service. Loli fan service, which is a little messed up, but still.

Yeah, it really puts the anime to shame in a lot of shots. It still threatens to put me on the FBI watchlist sometimes (if I'm not already on it for watching the anime), but it's honestly been great

Kaleid is a good read/watch but it really only picks up at the End of 2wrei where Kid Gil is introduced. I did like the 1st season especially that Illya(Kuro) Vs Shadow Saber (Alter) but thats mainly for the animation quality increase and the not insane plot it just revolves around the normal Fate/ premise. It takes a tone shift close to the end of 2wrei because of the fact that Illya has to do some emotional growth, which previously she acted immature and didn't want to have any magical abilities and was afraid of the HGW which was fine but she never really grew after confronting that. 2wrei's ending was the first major loss that Illya had lost effectively to the Ainzworths and forces her to go through an emotional arc and back again during 3wrei. And whilst has grown in maturity she is still a child unwilling to abandon anyone including Julian and Angelica which undeniably suprises the people like Shirou and Julian who have spent their entire lives living in singular states of mind.

Oath just makes Kaleid better, much like Zero does for Stay/Night. Fate is the reason I enjoy prequels, because not only are they often better, but they give you context that comes in real useful when watching what comes after.

I always thought that complaint was pretty stupid. Season one of kalied is very clearly going for the magical girl vibe, Shirou's design fits in clearly with the aesthetic. In general I think the show gets a bad rap. There's also that scene that everyone points to as being over sexualized but in context it's more funny than anything, I was laughing my ass off the first time I saw it.

The season you stopped at was the last season before this movie.

Not sure if you're still deciding, but to answer your question: you technically can. Of course, the things that were explained in the main series wouldn't be mentioned here anymore (like the HS cards), but it's overall digestible. Would still recommend at least reading the manga first before dipping in because it ties together so much of the story in one film it's most rewarding that way.

The content for Kaleid Season 4 was great but the anime really butchered it in pacing and many of the big fights were poorly done and rushed compared to previous seasons, seemingly due to them shifting the budget towards the movie and forcefully ending the plot in 12 episodes just so that it leaves off where the movie would pick up, which is a real shame. The last two episodes probably had 5+ episodes worth of content. Still, from what I hear, Kaleid has continued being pretty dark and good since then so I'm really looking forward to when this series returns, and hope the anime can do it justice this time!

I just wish they went all in on the magical girl trio polyamory thing rather than baiting the incest shit with the shirous. They kinda try to have it both ways and it's just confusing. (And since they'd then all be the same age it makes the fact that that age is, well, under-age to some degree... A bit less of a problem IMO. (As a story, it's still weird to watch.))

@@000Dragon50000 As far as I could tell from the manga at least, Kuro and Iliya sort of seem to drop their attraction for shirou to a degree from that point on. Though I'm not sure if it's in the fourth season of the anime or not, mainly since I didn't know that there was one, so there might be more of it in the anime. After all they tended to turn up all of the fan service in the anime. Plus, I've always viewed Iliyas's, and subsequently Kuro's, crush on Shirou as one that was born out of childish adoration of her older brother who would do so much for her, and as such I think that she would eventually grow out of it with time. And Kuro is just a perv, so she tended to make advances as a sort of joke as far as I could tell. Also, I know that it's a different Shirou, but if Iliya actually had a thing for him, then she would have responded with at least a little more than just shocked confusion and joy at seeing a friendly and familiar face.

@@nemasisdemarini8339 PFFFT, true, seeing Miyuverse Shirou would've been a fucking TRIP if Illya had feelings for her world's Shirou, and Kuro does enjoy doing lewd stuff with just about anyone who doesn't straight up tell her to piss off :p, but on the other hand she almost never lets anyone except Illya, Miyu and Irisveil know what she's really thinking. Eh, It definitely is a problem which subsided in later seasons but the fact that it was such a nuisance early on makes the show a bit harder to reccomend to new people, is all.
