One of my favourite episodes not only of Vinland Saga but of ALL anime. Just so powerful. The whole emotional character arc Thorfinn goes on from who he was in season 1 to who he becomes by the end of this season is just so good.

Fun facts from the official book: ① "The day of Askeladd's death coincided with Thorfinn's 18th birthday." Thorfinn's birthday is February 3rd, which coincides with the historical date of King Sweyn’s death, and the book also states that Thorfinn had just turned 18 when Askeladd died, which basically confirms that Askeladd's death equals Thorfinn's rebirth (The Growing-up ceremony). ② Yukimura: Askeladd surely knew that he couldn't live beyond that "worthless place", as he describes it himself. The struggles for the succession to the Danish throne, for which he would ultimately give his life, were nothing more than trivial matters in his eyes, which he seemed to brush aside with a wave of his hand. Askeladd was truly a man like no other. He then tells Thorfinn not to waste his life by stupidly killing and being killed by Canute's men. He gives the impression that he didn't lead his life the way he really wanted to. He probably would have liked to have lived a more jovial life. That's why he wants Thorfinn to go further and see a world he himself could never see. He seems sincere, and when he yells at Thorfinn to stay away in his last moments... we understand how special the young boy is to him. I hadn't even imagined that line myself before drawing this scene. His death will be superimposed on Thors's, making it clear that Askeladd was another father to Thorfinn... a somewhat brutal and unusual father, but a father nonetheless.

Can't wait for your reaction to episode 23. Another favorite episode. This anime change my perspective in life. And I want to share this beautiful anime to the important people in my life that needed this show. That's how i feel after watching this season. There is something so beautiful about Askelladd, Thorfinn's father figure from hell, actually being the one to help Thorfinn out of that pit instead of dragging him down.

There's something inspiring about a man who is the devil himself and does evil deeds, but wishes he was better. Unwilling to see himself ever become better instead sets his sights on Thorfinn knowing that this child has the potential to be better than he ever could be and perhaps would be some small measure of giving back to the world that he took so much from

10:03 The music we hear here is a variation of the one that plays in episode 4 when Thors dies. The first time this music plays, Thorfinn makes a oath: to seek revenge at all costs. The second time we hear it here, Thorfinn makes a new oath: to abstain from violence. This is a much healthier promise. You can feel it in the music too; the first version during Thors' death is simply sad from start to finish, whereas here, the version starts off sad but ends in a crescendo, with all the instruments coming together in what feels like hope. In short, this show is a masterpiece.

yes, he wouldn't have any if it wasn't for Askeladd but after Thors dies, he was the one who didn't listen to Askeladd's advice to let go and kept sticking around, sinking deeper into hatred and rage in the process so, in a way it is BECAUSE of Askeladd that Thorfinn will value peace more

10/10 Hauntingly beautifull! This was an unforgetable episode! Thorfinn is confronted with his past in a way i will nrver forget! I had all kinds of emotions watching this! I could feel the tears at time! This was art! This was legendary! As Thorfinn is confronted with who he is amd who he was, we get some of the BEST character development i have ever seen! It is never to late to change and face yourself! God level writing! The animation was amazing! Shots and scenes printed in my mind! A dark and disturbing atmosphere combined with the great soundtrack! This was one of the best episodes of the show! Season 2 does not dissapoint!

After watching for nearly two months, on January 12, I finished watching Vinland Saga Season 2, as well as the entire Vinland Saga. And honestly, no matter how much I admire it, it falls short of its greatness. The phrase "Perfection at its peak" can be used to define the magnificence of the series. Especially, the episodes from 17 to 24 were the finest among the entire series. I think series like this, as well as Violet Evergarden doesn’t come too often, rather comes every 100 years. So, this series will remain eternally as one of my favourite series among 143 series I've watched so far.

This "Red Hell Pit" scene is so deep with a strong message which can be applied to real life. We all have that pit we are afraid to fall back into. Something bad or awful we did to someone, it always comes back to haunt us. It stays in one place (the pit) where other sins we commited by our own hands pile on top of each other like dead bodies. That feeling of helplessness along with depression is be one of the worst feelings in the world which the pit brings upon us. But despite all this, you CAN escape that pit. It will be painful and leave behind scars for life for you to remember but all scars eventually heal no matter how deep they are. You have to push yourself to escape from that dark pit. Crying won't help you, no one else can lift you out of the pit but what they if even if it's one person can do is motivate you to do better, only you can save yourself from the death awaiting in that pit. Truly a beautiful and deep episode and Thorfinn's VA did a fantastic job of giving us such a powerful motivating scream. You can literally feel that spirit in him fighting against all the odds no matter how hopeless it seems.

THIS is my favorite episode of the series. Seeing Thorfinn's inner demons torturing him and him being so helpless against them is RAW. And of course if was Asskeladd the one who got him out of there; even after death and everything they went through, he is still kind of a mentor to him. And his oath of no violence is great as well. This is truly cinema.

This epsiode is GOAT'd, but still only my second favorite ep from the season. Also, the retainers didn't get punished because a punishment for them would mean a punishment would come to Einar and Thorfinn for initiating a fight as slaves, just or not. He spared them by coming to a fair settlement where neither side was punished.

I think not punishing the retainers was probably Pater's idea. It's the best way to maintain peace, and if the retainers were punished but Thorfinn and Einar weren't (they did start the fight, after all), the retainers would treat them even worse.

Completely swearing off violence might seem insane to us but like think of it like..there is an alcoholic..he decided to stop drinking and quit alcohol..for normal people, it might not seem like much even if we drink one or two drinks every week..but for the ex-alcoholic, even drinking 1 drink a month might be bad as they fear they'll return their old state..the same is true for Thorfinn..he has to stop it completely for the time being because he fears he will return to his old state...it will take time before he is ready to take some "shots" and be ok with it and not fear returning to his old state

I don’t know if this is right but when I see askeladd he’s in hell, he died the life of a warrior so he goes there. But thors in the last clip we see him walking in the fields of wheat. Makes me think of elysium in Greek mythology of fields of gold (wheat) so we could prob assume that’s Valhalla or heaven. One a hellish place with no sun underground covered in blood. The other surrounded by life under beautiful sun and blue sky.

You were angry at Ketil for not reprimanding the retainers, but he quite literally had no choice. A slave could under no circumstances hit a free man in that time, even in self defense. If Ketil punished the retainers for burning the wheat, then the retainers would've demanded that Ketil punished Thorfinn and Einar. By letting the retainers off the hook, he also managed to ensure Thorfinn and Einar wouldn't get severely hurt or killed as well, that was basically the deal.

Idc what anyone says in Askeladd was like a 2nd father to Thorfinn. Albeit a pretty terrible one but still lol. I mean he was actually with Thorfinn for longer than Thors was. Being with someone for that long is definitely subconsciously gonna make you care for them in some way. Anytime Askeladd was in danger did whatever he could to protect him not just because he wanted to kill him himself but because he cared for him in some messed up way.

I think it was odd for many to think that at first in S1 with the complexity of the dynamic rooted in hatred, but the longer the series goes on with seeing Thorfinn's evolving perspective, the more you can see it clearly. Since the S1 finale, it was suggested with the visual parallel of Thorfinn losing both Thors and Askeladd. Askeladd was the father killer (killed his own father, had Thors killed as Thorfinn's father, had Ragnar killed as Canute's father figure, and killed King Sweyn as Canute's father). Yet he had 2 spiritual sons in Thorfinn and Canute.

Philosophies are heavy with this show (Long message warning) When thors says "there's no one in the world who it's okay to hurt" 95%+ of poeple immediately go "tHat'S noT TruE, WhAt abOUt HitLer Or tHe PeeDOs" In reality, these are simply justifications based on our collective morals and laws we've come up with for hurting someone. If someone does something bad and we do something bad to them, we may not be as bad, but it doesn't change the fact that both are wrong. Different levels of wrong perhaps by our moral and legal standards, but nevertheless we should never have to resort to that. Punishments that don't violate human rights are abundant nowadays. Violence will procure more violence and that's not just a cliche saying I grew up facing abuse all my childhood in not only school but also at home, so I'm more sensitive to philosophical ideas such as these because I've been there. Even now, I don't want to hurt the people responsible, I think they needed just as much help in being taught not to do such things. Alright here's something that's gonna get me cancelled but I'mma say it: Only in recent years have people come to really accept and understand it's okay to be around Gay people, Lesbians, Bisexuals, Transgender, Queer etc, people. Way back, these were all considered mental illnesses because some were attraction to a gender other than the opposite one, considered taboo even, but we've come to open our minds and accept this. However, in a similar way since it conflicts with laws and our morals I don't think Pedo's are inherently EVIL, BAD NATURED, DESERVING OF DEATH people. These people simply have mental disorders that causes their brain to not function properly and causes an attraction to children, which is something that should not be happening. These people shouldn't be getting despised, killed, tortured etc, they need mental help. They need to be put in a Mental Institution where they can have treatment attempted upon them. Not delivered the death penalty or tortured. Attraction to any gender other than the opposite one may be accepted today, but the neurological fact does not change that it's not how the actual programming of the brain is meant to be. It's what was once considered a mental disorder, but now we accept as a normal part of our lives because it's not like Person A being Gay or Lesbian or trans actually hurts anyone else or violates any human rights. Being attracted to a minor however IS detrimental and for that very reason that brain disfunction should not be accepted as normal and be treated like the mental problem it is. Hitler wasn't "EVIL", what IS evil? Something that just conflicts with our moral values? He was misguided, he was never taught the error of his ways, his mind had problems. There were so many factors causing him to end up that way that he did not have a choice in. Had those factors been changed, perhaps all he did would not have happened. Ofc not everyone's gonna agree with me, but I don't really expect any more than 4-5% of a hundred person sample to agree with me. Some people just like having enemies and having people who they think are okay to hurt simply so they have some way to vent

I think they got punished or will. Cause otherwise what ketil says to Patar doesn't make much sense.
