Oaxacan artist teaches Long Beach residents the art of 'alebrijes' 

Dante the dog in Pixar's 'Coco' may have put 'alebrijes,' or spirit animals, on the big screen, but Jara Avila has been dedicating her much of her time crafting the intricate art of these mystic creatures. Hailing from Oaxaca, Mexico, Avila presented the tedious art method to her workshop guests at a nursery in North Long Beach on Saturday. She talks about the history and folklore of these alebrijes and how an entire town dedicates itself to perfecting these sculptures.
