Great comp! I’m aiming for the X8 for a few reasons. Mainly to have access to the best possible reproduction of the originals and it does tend to have a vibe I like better. It’s also kind of a very cool piece of history that when you think about it has experienced zero inflation since it was released. The XA in the 80’s relatively was 15k so all the “it costs too much” people are kind of not informed of the deal this really is and an opportunity that doesn’t come along in a lot of industries. Both solid synths. Thanks for the breakdown and thoughtfulness!!

Hands down the absolute best comparison between those two! And finally an honest review from someone that is definitely not biased. And I also happen to agree with your conclusion. There are too many "reviews" and "comparisons" out there on RU-vid that are simply new owners of a $5K synth that only try to justify (to themselves) their purchase. Thanks for sharing.

Sweet! Anticipating this episode. I was considering buying an OB6 and fantacised about saving up for an OBX8, but I came to realize that even an OB6 would take me forever to save up for. After doing some research I think the closest I can come is a Tetra, or maybe a Prophet 08 if I can find one for cheaper than the already relatively cheap second hand price they're typically listed for. The good news is, though those units aren't nearly as majestic as the more premium offerings here, they come close enough to "doing the thing" for my needs/application. From what I can gather online, Instead of silky and majestic, they're kinda more rambunctious and wild, which I'm cool with. .....In any case I appreciate this episode. Unfortunately, I don't live anywhere close to a cool store like Perfect Circuit. Testing these instruments out in person is not an option. I have to rely on the imperfection on the web to figure out what synths will speak to me and my wallet. So videos like this are valuable and appreciated. Thanks Miles!

Don’t forget that the OB-X8 has two more voices and another octave on the keyboard. That’s a significant part of the price difference. Having owned both, and falling squarely on the OB-X8 side of it, these are the biggest difference to me: - Tone. While there are obvious similarities, the difference was bigger than I expected. The X8 has a much bigger, fatter sound, particularly in the mids and low mids. The OB-6 sounds more “scooped”, with more pronounced high frequencies and the sub oscillator. - The biggest difference in any section is the envelopes, which you didn’t cover. The X8 is much more capable of shorter, percussive sounds like electric piano. To a degree that was very surprising. The curves are very different. - Square waves. They sound different. Not sure why technically, but it is a significantly different sound at the oscillator level. What the OB-6 has in its favor is a more “modern” control structure, outside of the sonics. The Clock section, arpeggiator and sequencer. LFO tempo sync, etc. The arpeggiator on the X8 is more difficult to use, although you can get to the same end result. It’s just harder to get there. And it has no sequencer or effects. The X8 ends up having more modulation capabilities when you get into Page 2, and they’re unique ones that you don’t often see, which come from the OB-8. The sum of the differences ends up being pretty big. If the sound of the OB-X/a/8 is what you want, you’ll only fully get it from the X8. The OB-6 is a Prophet-6 with SEM-based oscillators and filters. It has some Oberheim tone, but not the real, real deal. The OB-6 is cool in its own right, and it’s up to the individual what they want. The biggest drawback it has on its own merits is that you will get some noticeable voice stealing on pads with a long release, and when you’re playing those kinds of sounds, you wish you had a bigger keyboard. If you already have a good MIDI keyboard with more octaves, the module is probably a good idea. One other note: a big use of the F. Env modulation on the X8 is sync. When you sync square waves and modulate the pitch of OSC 2 with the filter envelope, you get that very well known “talking” sound, like on the song “Let’s Go” by the Cars (which was a Prophet-5 preset). The OB-X didn’t have that capability, but it was so popular that they added it on the OB-Xa. The OB-6 can also do it because it has a Prophet-based Poly Mod section under the name X-Mod. Just posted a Short on my channel to demonstrate.
@AlainHubert
@AlainHubert Год назад
The OB6 is much more Oberheim than you think. The voice cards in it are essentially Oberheim SEM module-on-a-card. Tom Oberheim even said it himself, back when the synth came out. So, to say that "The OB-6 is a Prophet-6 with SEM-based oscillators and filters. It has some Oberheim tone, but not the real, real deal." is misguided. Tom said it himself when the OB6 came out, and I quote: "...the analog section (of the OB6) consists of 6 voice cards that are my SEM synthesizer module on a card". And to address the argument that the OB6 lacks one octave on the keyboard, I chose the Desktop Module version and play it with a MIDI controller. And for the voice-stealing artifacts on long pads, one could always get a second OB6 Module and use it in Chain Mode to get a 12 voices Oberheim polysynth, and all for less money than an OB-X8.
@ajlazarusofficial
@ajlazarusofficial Год назад
@@AlainHubert Two modules would cost $4800 vs $4999 for the OB-X8. For me, the difference in sound makes the OB-X8 the clear winner. It’s hard to start describing the differences with a bunch of subjective adjectives, but I tried to in the previous comment. I used to have an OB-6 and a Prophet-6, so I’m speaking from experience. Each element of the signal chain has its own calibration, range, etc. Those all add up to the end product. The OB-X8 is an actual OB. The OB-6 is a Prophet-6 aside from the voice cards. Meaning the LFOs, the envelopes, etc. There are some types of sounds where it gets close to the X8, but there are also a lot it can’t do. The SEM/OB-X filter sounds very similar. The other five filter options on the X8 sound very different from anything on the OB-6. There are also sounds the OB-6 can do that the X8 can’t, because of the different architecture. But I wanted the sound of the old OBs, and the X8 has it. All three of them. They weren’t trying to produce an exact replica with the OB-6. With the X8, they did.
@MilesAwayOfficial
@MilesAwayOfficial Год назад
That's a great point - I didn't talk about hardware but the Keyboard on the X8 is the nicest one I own by far, and the extra octave is lovely. Its also the best built of all my synths.
@paulmapp8306
@paulmapp8306 10 месяцев назад
your first statement... Is only half true for me as If I get the OBx8 it will be a desktop. Much cheaper mind. When I directly compared them, what jumped out was the notes and harmonics on the OBx8 can clearly he heard as their own thing - individually. With the OB6 they all kind of blurred into one sound. I much preferred the definition - and the openness (or lack of congestion) that definition made. It was quick shocking in the flesh though - far more different than on ANY video Ive watched.
@ajlazarusofficial
@ajlazarusofficial 10 месяцев назад
@@paulmapp8306 Yep. The comment about definition is my experience too. The OB-6 seems to have a more compressed gain structure. It seems like it might even have some kind of limiter on it to produce more uniform output. That’s just a guess, but that’s what it sounds like. Also a different frequency response curve. More high frequencies, fewer mids and low mids on the OB-6. Less punchy and powerful, more sizzle on top.

Thanks Miles. Have really enjoyed your dialogues on GS regarding these synths. I know you have very high praise for the 3W now too which is on my shortlist. Wondering if that would still scratch the Obie itch (as I am a huge fan of the vintage VCO/Filter sound) while having the modern flexibility of wavetables/etc. Otherwise, I am seriously thinking of pairing a Hydrasynth Deluxe with an OB6 module for a cheaper and more flexible setup. 4 octaves on the keyboard version of the OB6 may not work for me.
@MilesAwayOfficial
@MilesAwayOfficial Год назад
Thanks for watching! I honestly like the 3rd Wave more than all my other synths. Something about it just speaks to me. BUT it does a much better job emulating the Prophet synths than the OB's. Nothing sounds like a real SEM filter, even though the 3rd Wave digital emulation is nice! I like your hydra + ob6 module set up idea, that would be a great set up!

Awesome video!!! I totally agree with you! I currently can keep both, so I do not have to decide between them. If I did have to make a choice. I would keep the OB-6. The one thing I have noticed with gear looking back, in some ways when I could only afford one synth or guitar I became much more intimate with that instrument and intern got so much more out of it. Nowadays as synths have become more affordable and there are so many amazing plugin instruments, it seems I never really learn the depths of one particular instrument. Too many choices is both positive and negative.

The X8 is one of the best reissues ever. Ever. It sounds absolutely insane. Huge dimensions and creamy. Also, punches for days. As far as the modulation goes, or lack of, i feel today’s effect pedals can supply all the weird modulation you need. The Obie X8 run though a great chorus, delay or a blackhole type reverb makes for one of the greatest sounding synths ever in my opinion.

Modulation in this case is things like LFOs, etc. The Modulation section on the front panel. The X8 has a lot of extra modulation, when you get into Page 2. Arguably more than the OB-6, but different. Things like Chorus, Flangers, Phasers, etc are also modulation effects, but those are a separate thing that comes at the end of a sound, and can be put on any instrument. They also use LFOs of their own. LFO Pitch modulation on a synth is essentially the same thing as Chorus. If you look at a Chorus pedal, you’ll see rate and depth - the same thing that you see on a synth.

Friend, while you were testing the filter, as far as I can see you had keytracking on the OBX on but off at the OB6. This makes really a difference, especially when you hear 2 different peaks running instead of 2 times the same while playing that octave. So it could not sound the same, even if the filters were pretty much equal.
@MilesAwayOfficial

Good catch! Thanks. That definitely does make a difference. But they also sound completely different with it off. The X8 filter does not open nearly as full/bright as the 6 without tracking on. its very odd behaviour on the X8

Great video as always! I think it boils down to whether you want the oberheim flavor vs experience. The ob-6 is essentially a Prophet 6 with a Sem filter and square sub. Amazing for a more modern take on sound design with variable vcos and the classic state variable aspect of the Sem filter. The OB-X8 ticks all the marks for me for a modern re introduction of an entire family of genre defining polys. The X8 contains every nuance of the x,xa,and 8 with every filter choice, envelope curvature, and the vintage knob I believe was modeled to behave exactly like the respective 3 units while the vintage knob on the OB-6 is more of a generic representation of what vintage polys do. The sound of the x8 is exactly what the vintage obs are like while I think the ob-6 is more of an exaggeration of the Oberheim sound. page 2 is super accessible once you get used to it and there is an overlay for the x8 that adds the page 2 graphics for use on the panel.

When the obx8 came out i pre ordered it immediately and thought it would be my dream synth. I love the oberheim sound and had the ob6. It came and i was so dissappointed in comparison to my expectations. The vco's is what makes the synth mainly i think. But for 5500 dollar it had way to many flaws. Even without the price. The synth has huge charakter and it is always present you cant do nothing about it but that is ok. The features are weak. No mixer and just fm on/off or another fm in the 2nd page. I hated that 2nd page concept very much. 2nd page for stuff like mixer and fm. I liked the filter but i don't need them both to be honest. And the envelopes, even it were two of them i didn't like much. I also don't liked the 3 in one concept. Would you really want to have all of these 3 oberheims which are all very limited and samey in comparison? On the other hand it is huge but light as paper and there is nothing in it. The arp concept i didn't like even as the bender. This give me vibes of a synth that is just a simulation of something. Knobs are huge but i like the space concept of a ob6 more. With the 2nd page and the huge space the obx8 is way less quick to program than p6 or ob6. With its big heavy sound and the control layout it was like playing with an elephant. Now you have these 3 classic and samey synth under the hood but therefor the programming is stiff. Wysiwyg is one important part of these vintage synth. Even if the ob6 has worse vco's everything else is better or even as good and quick as hell. Also the sequencer is so much fun. It sounds fantastic but it isn't a fun synth to me. For this amount of money i would buy a xpander or mks80. With all my love to oberheim i can't get into it. And i really asked myself if people are really like this recreation with just a different filter, 2 envelopes and light changes in mod matrix in comparison to a straight concept with more features and a sequencer with the same sound? I will skip that and wait for another oberheim or something else. For example, the p5 is a better synth for me. The old concept of a p5 works until today and the sound is different but also fantastic. I really hope for the day when we get synth with the sound of these but the features of an polybrute and a control layout of also a polybrute or prophet 6. the best of all worlds. I really think that people are after that vintage sound but not after a exact copy with all there flaws if there are any. At least i hope so. Why.....?
@markus6409
@markus6409 11 месяцев назад
Oh, and i never played any of the original obx's but the sound was more hifi and stiff than i thought. Without the vintage knob it is very stiff and the knob didn't do much when i remember right. I like the sem and four voice sound. Xpander i also like very much. But i was just wondering how clean and well tuned the obx8 sounds. But sad for me i like roland the most. There will never be a new synth with that sound it seems like the obx8 is for oberheim.

Miles I’ve got to ask - Out of the Trigon 6 and the OB6 which do you prefer? They’re both so unique and different
@klstay
@klstay Год назад
Given the price of either the first question is the same as with any pricier synth - for your financial situation is the purchase of either possibly as ill advised as your car, mortgage or other financial burdens? More objective introspection on that would result in fewer synth (among other things) sales in general, so maybe not for the sake of the builders... 😉For this exact question I think it boils down to whether you already have (or are considering) a more broadly capable poly like the 6 that gets into this neighborhood of sounds. Even a full digital like Hydrasynth or Iridium can get in the neighborhood - even if it is perhaps the outskirts. If you have one of those or something like a Summit, Poybrute, Super 6 etc. AND can afford the big guy why not get the synth that sits in the same seat in THAT house instead of one that simply parks in the same garage?

Are any of the OBX8 envelopes snappy? Does the OBX8 really sound as bad for bass in comparison as you demonstrated compared to the OB6 - was it more panned or a bad patch / setting or something? I will say the bass sounds on the OB-X8 are not my fave personally but that's just my taste. The envelopes are solid, and snappy enough - not to the level of Moog or Prophet but they are good. The bass sounds it excels at are big wide 8-voice unison basses, but I still use my Moog Sub 37 for 90% of all my basses on my records. A comparison I am dying to make! Sadly getting a P5/10 isn't in the budget right now, but I've played them lots. P5 is the king for warmth and thickness, OB-X8 is more hollow/emotional/beautiful. Both are great, its like apples and oranges

@@MilesAwayOfficial I played the OB-X8 in the store today. It appears loaded with "emulation" type sounds (flute, clarinet, vibes, etc.). It's much easier to stack and see what you are doing. Maybe I need an editor for my P10? I'd buy both if I had the money. I actually think the P10 is more "emotional" but the OB-8X might have more "useful" sounds. Then again, I have no idea what I'm doing!

I like this, I agree with most of your points, I have a OB-6 desktop, my jewel in my studio, totaly I like the ON-X8 little bit more, but it's super expensive and have a keyboard. So it's not an option, and it big, I have very little space for masterpieces like this, if I can afford em at all. But funny thing around 10:20, You like the the Oberhaeim better, no fault in that but I this why I like the OB-6 so much more, one of my favorite velo sounds could never be done with the OB-X8. But I'm an Oberheim fan forever, the sounds are like nothing else, you can't get them anywhere else. Thank you for a your time,

OB-6 comes out on top for me as an overall modern instrument vs the X8, UNLESS you crave the classic Oberheim poly sound or need the octaves on the keyboard and don't want to use a module. The biggest feature the X8 has over the OB-6 is the 2 additional voices - and it's definitely not nothing.

I guess the next logical question is if this video is about the desktop modules instead of key versions, the same applies concerning needs or desires as the money difference becomes less of a consideration. I have two Osmose MPE units so more keys I do not need. $3,500 is still too much for the X8 module but if I can find one used around $2,500 that might be an option.

So much of the character diff comes from the oscillators. X8 and full and fat, 6 are fizzy and the differences are highlighted by the filter. X8 has more prominent resonance. For me x8 wins LP and notch, the 6 wins BP and HP, and I think it might just be the way the oscillators interact with the filter. I agree the sweepable filter mode is the best thing about the 6. X8 wins for me overall due to fuller core tone and more modulation capabilities and layering. Those modulation envelopes are great, and LFO 2 “vibrato” LFO having all the different wave shapes is great too, don’t have to waste an LFO on pitch things. XMod on the 6 is good just to lightly tickle filter cutoff and get extra motion. Still lots more ways to get motion out of the X8, especially considering layering. I think they’re way too different to replace one with the other. I love both and can’t justify selling either one. Thank you for highlighting the differences instead of patch matching!

The LFOs are not polyphonic, unfortunately. They are per layer. So you get 2 lfos that are independent if you are in single, and you can make them go at different rates with keyboard tracking, but you don't truly have LFO per voice.

If you own neither and can afford the X8 without taking too much of a hit financially, it’s worth it just for those extra voices. Ultimately for the purist it comes down to one thing and one thing only. Which sounds better? Another comment mentioned the envelopes and electric piano like capability which might be extremely important when that's required. When the Morph feature was demonstrated on the 6 it didn't sound impressive, not sure if that was a best representation or not. Also sounds like there's no reason to buy the X8 until and if/when they fix all the issues. That's a lot of cash for a sloppy system.

So the OB-X8 double mode is the same as on the OB-Xa? You can thank the CS-80 for introducing that idea. I have a Jupiter-8 emulation (TAL J-8) and like that approach better, but the Oberheim sound is epic. The OB-6 is my dream synth. Of course, I'm not laying down the cash for either at this time. I'm making do with emulations and other software synths like Surge, Odin 2 and my other classic emulations. Heck, I've even got a Virus B/Virus C CLAP plugin that uses the original ROMs. And yes, I have two CS-80 emulations, the Cherry Audio one and one I built in PureData (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AbAXVtwluhc.html)

It's not difficult to compare Fiat and Ferrari there are 2 italians cars but not with the same prestige, same price and same quality... OB6, when it outside would be a new synthesizer maded by a collaboration between Oberheim and Smith... OB8 is a true Oberheim (first difference). The second is the price and functions, you got what you paid 😄 If you look the true Oberheim Sound, OB8 is better... if you look a synth for modern production similar to an Oberheim but less expensive, OB6 is a cool alternative at my sens.
