Love both guys, but I think John had this one wrong. I'm not sure how effective it is to counter Glenn's points with "this is all social medias fault". At it's simplest, Obama actively avoided backing law enforcement, driving a wedge between his progressive supporters and more moderate/conservative supporters of law and order. How does that not have a direct impact on the relationship between citizenry and police we have today? A less divisive leader would have balanced the different interests at hand and wouldn't back a side until all of the facts came in. In the same way Trump could influence his worst supporters, so could Obama. Our race relations issues aren't new to the Trump era - the cookie really began to crumble under Obama.

I think the problem with Obama is what could have been. If he had been a different person and a different President, the country might have finally moved to a place where race wasn’t such a big issue. The wound of racism had been healing and Obama could have helped it heal to a point where the wound was mostly gone. But instead he poked the wound often, opening in up, as a way to deflect his shortcomings as a leader and policy maker.

One man was not going to change what had been in place for decades .While I appreciate these two for their views I also realize they are the coastal elites telling the other what they want to hear. Grains of truth are sprinkled in the diatribe but this is about one sided as it gets. E. McClain gets no time from them, B Taylor must have been doing SOMETHING wrong. I truly hoped he would be a healer, and usher in an era of race reconciliation this nation sorely needs, and millions and millions of people of all races seemed to long for as well. In many ways, Obama was the perfect candidate - one could project whatever one wished on him. Obama's record of voting 'present' meant having no record, and being black inoculated him from the typical scrutiny given to every other candidate. A lot of people, whites in particular, thought voting for him would finally at long last get us past the fixation on race. How ironic that it did the very opposite, almost as if that was the whole point. One of the wonders of our time is how many people voted for Obama and later, for Trump.

I have a high level of respect for Mr. Glenn Loury. Not only because of what he has been able to accomplish in his career as an economist but also because what he has and still contributes to the conversation for the progress and advancement of black people in this country. Having said that, I do think that Glenn is being extremely polarizing in his position against Obama. (Which can be to his own detriment) He is also using “slippery slope” arguments in his critic of Obama particularly when speaking about Obama’s response to Travon Martin. You CANNOT accurately talk about blacks and their relationship with police without taking into consideration the historical relationship that blacks have had with police in America. So when Obama is talking to the country regarding the Travon Martin case, he isn’t JUST talking about the Travon Martin case, he is talking to a historically wounded people (Black people) who have seen this happen more times than they can count and are tired of being on the “bad end of the stick” on these things. Obama is sympathizing with them. He is coming along side them and relating to them. He is doing something that Trump was incapable of doing which is showing empathy. He HAD to do that. He HAD to respond that way. It appears (As John pointed out) that Glenn has a personal vendetta against Obama. Such personal vendettas that show itself in strong emotional attacks against Obama don’t help the conversation regarding blacks but it hurts the conversation. Obama is loved by blacks and he becomes “divided against himself” by speaking so harshly against one of blacks beloved hero’s. I can see past this, many blacks will not. What I think Glenn fails to see is the nature and predicament Obama was in when he first took office as President of the United States. The reality of the situation is that Obama was in a “No win situation” as President. He became President at a time when the country was at its worst economically. This was on the heels of the two-term President George W Bush who sent the economy to the dumps! (I voted for Bush both terms and I am a registered Independent. Bush inherited a great economy). Obama inherited the worst economy any of us have ever seen since the Great Depression. He couldn’t save the country and save black people at the same time. I SAW THIS BEFORE IT EVER HAPPENED. I did not expect him to turn around the lower socioeconomic parts of black communities because the “Powers that Be” were not going to allow that. Furthermore the GOP had determined that they were going to block EVERY SINGLE policy he came up with No matter what it was, no matter how good it was for the country. They did from DAY ONE IN OFFICE! How quickly do people forget! It is fallacious to say that Race relations are worse because of Obama. Glenn knows that is not true! Race relations are not where they are now at because of Trump or Twitter. Trump only brought to the surface what was in people the whole time! You don’t have 350 years of Chattel slavery and Jim Crow and get rid of racism and bigotry in 50 years. Many of the people ARE STILL ALIVE and they are exposing themselves. What did we honestly expect to happen in the black community? I have followed Glenn Loury from afar and it appears that for the better half of the last 35 years he seems to fluctuate and change positions. He goes from conservative to liberal and then back again. One would wonder why this is. It appears that he is in the middle of yet another one of these fluctuations of view points. I don’t think the issue is that he doesn’t believe things as he used to. I think he fails to see that there is a level of truth in all the positions he has ever held. He doesn’t have to go back and forth and take an “Either/Or” approach. He should take an “Both/And” approach. Blacks can be victims AND They also need to be responsible for their lives and their actions. Both can be true and I believe they are true. America can be an amazing country to live in AND it can also be the source of great corruption and evil. Both can be true. Is this not true of ourselves? Don’t we as human beings possess an ability to do great good and evil? This is woven all throughout the the Holy scriptures. In the Bible, King David was considered “a man after God’s own heart” yet he was also a murderer and adulterer. BOTH ARE TRUE ABOUT DAVID! The same is true with us and most things. Ultimately, blacks being responsible for ones actions and life is far more important than being a victim, BUT THEY ARE ALSO VICTIMS! Both are true! WE MUST SPEAK THE TRUTH! Glenn Loury is a much needed voice in the discussion regarding the progress of black people. I think that it is important that he be a good steward of his position as a thought leader in this conversation and speak the truth, instead of taking a side. I learned a long time ago that, the truth is always somewhere in the middle! This is where I choose to stand. I hope and pray that he can do the same! 🙏🏿

I'm an African American married to a woman of half West African half white British descent and I have a take on Obama - it was great to see a person of color in the White House no doubt. But Obama always seemed a bit fraudulent in the way he co-opted African American culture when he was not from it. He was from Hawaii, raised by a white mother, moved to Chicago as an adult and now he has an African American accent and soul? I live with a (lovely) person like him and if my wife acted like that it would be laughable. No one who grew up in that manner -raised by a white parent not around African Americans sounds like that. He was just very good at code switching to further his political career. Neither good or bad, just a standard politician.

The crash of 2008 cannot be solely blamed on Wall Street. Lending practices in place for decades were forced to be lenient under Clinton. What do you think happens when you give large loans to people and don’t check their income? stated loans…. That’s what lenders were forced to do or be fined. I’m not saying Wall Street is innocent, but the government had a VERY LARGE ROLE in this. If skeptical, see the student loan debt crisis. Ever since government took over student loan lending in 2010…pushed banks out…to alleviate the”red tape”. Now look… and Maxine Waters tried to blame it on the banks but they shoved it right in her face!

President Obama did NOT create the crash. Thanks to him and the changes he made, many survived the crash, changes like allowing the unemployed to get the Pell Grant if close to obtaining their college degree without having to look for a job. Also the Cobra credit when employers had to pay 65% of Cobra medical insurance costs did laid off employees. He extended unemployment several times. If not for him, many would not have survived and many more would have lost their homes. He was the best president in my voting lifetime . He took over the presidency when unemployment was thirteen percent in Oregon. He left with it at 4.5 percent. He brought hope to people. Trump was about bringing hatred and sexism!!

What would our nation look like if our first Black president had called for calm and circumspection in the Trayvon and Brown cases, and made sure that his governance was characterized by an affirmative that racism as a system was over? He could have said, "Look, I'm a Black man in the oval office - it's time to stop pretending that the Black community is limited at all. If you put your mind to it, and make all the necessary sacrifices, every Black man or woman can achieve and succeed in today's America. I know the details of our nation's racist past, but my being president PROVES that we are at last past all that. We HAVE overcome! Time to treat one another as human beings - period."

Great discussion. Of course, perhaps the problem regarding your disappointment in political leaders is founded in the reality that political leaders are politicians who's first commitment is to election and re-election. Thus they play the crowd rather than set an example. This has long been the case, particularly in the oval office, but as well in the houses of congress and the supreme court. I completely understand your disappointment in Obama as a president who missed a great opportunity to narrow the racial divide in the country, but you really shouldn't have been surprised.

"With Obama not in a position to know any better"? Again, dude, he is a race-baiting political hustler who took a problematic case with a HISPANIC and a BLACK person and turned it into something about White Vs. Black. Obama is THE PRESIDENT. He knew who both Martin and Zim were within A DAY of the event. His PR flacks and intel people easily had access to reams of info about BOTH of them, and he clearly could have poured water on the fire by making it CLEAR to people that Zim was a stand-up guy not only lacking a racist history, but a history of DEFENDING blacks when their own community wouldn't do it. Obama certainly had access to summaries of Martin's FB "MMA" type posts, showing what a vicious little wannabe THUG he was, and the fact that the school he was in had tossed him out for his second instance of drug possession. There is no way in HELL Obama would ever have accepted Martin into his family. He would have had this stuff within 24 hours, probably within EIGHT. He could have made Zim's history of standing up a homeless black man against police brutality, and getting him some semblance of justice when the local black community was totally disinterested in doing anything for the guy widespread public knowledge. Instead, he stood by and said nothing while the merdia DELIBERATELY ran race relations into the toilet. Now, don't get me wrong, Martin was who he was because his parents had no business having children. They were both ridiculously irresponsible as parents, raised a child who would have been in and out of jail for his entire life, whatever there was of it, more than likely. He certainly would have wound up with a long rap sheet... again, because his parents were worthless. The mother sends him to be with his father after his latest escapade, getting tossed out of school -- what is the father's response? To recognize he had a troubled child very much on the wrong path? No he leaves the kid alone, ditches him, to go out with his GF. My response to him is an indictment: "You fucking piece of shit bastard, why the hell would anyone worthy of the term 'adult' do that to a blatantly troubled teen put into your care, much less your own offspring?" I'm with Glenn, here. Obama poured kerosene on a fire, and laughed as he did it.

Glenn has the courage of a lion in taking this on; one of America's foremost intellectuals. The reality is this is too hot to handle for most people, including I fear Mr. McWhorter, whom I otherwise admire. Or else perhaps McWhorter is arguing in good faith, in which case his view is blinkered inside a highly refined elite bubble that cannot grasp commonsense. Camille Paglia has noted how much race relations were set back by decades by said occupant. It is a human tragedy, when he could have been so much more transcendent in uniting people, that he would choose to endlessly divide the polity along racial lines for cheap Democratic point-scoring. The result will be far more tensions, distrust, enmity, and I fear violence. There was a psychotic, even a sociopathic, aspect to driving up tensions in this way. Meanwhile simple concepts like a universal rule of law -- however imperfectly realized, and however betrayed in the past -- remain the goal for social stability. But of course that gets in the way of the left's Marxist revolution in our streets. Hence also the dropped prosecutions and absurd double standards for 1/6 versus 4 months last summer when entire city blocks were incinerated...

I've been saying the same thing, that he could have been a transformative president. And I'm a republican activist. I felt some people voted for him simply because he was black, because it would be so cool. But in Jan 2009 I said a little nonpartisan prayer that maybe he could do some good. I agree, and am aligned similarly to yourself. I myself felt at the time that he was what he was accused of being by the Right, and I think he validated all of their concerns in due course. I thought he was a canny, cynical operator then, and time has born that belief out, and the insanity of the Democratic Party today, while not wholly of Obama's doing, is surely largely of his and his fellow travelers' doing.
