I earn $0 income, full time student, the marketplace is making me pay $230 a month for health insurance for 2023, how am I supposed to do this? College requires you have health insurance to live on campus, I'm homeless without living on campus and I have no vehicle to sleep in either. What the hell is going on? America makes it so hard to get out of poverty

As of now 2022 In most states you should be able get Medicaid. But if you live in GA, AL, MS, SC, NC, TN, FL, TX, KS, WY, WI ... those 11 state governments still choosing NOT to expand their Medicaid programs so there's a coverage gap for people like you: income too low for obamacare. If you're in one of those 11 states, here's some ideas: 1.) get covered on one of your parent's plan at work if you're under age 26 2.) a parent or someone else supporting you can claim you as a tax dependent (as long as you don't make more than $4,000/yr for 2023 if you're 24 or older) & they can apply for your 2023 obamacare. If you're 23 & under & fulltime student in 2023, your parents should still be able to claim you as a tax dependent and apply for obamacare for you. Check with your tax professional if that applies to you first. 3.) If no one can claim you as a tax dependent for 2023 & you do side jobs, report the self employment income for your side jobs or freelance work so you can qualify, and be sure to file your 2023 taxes properly in 2024 to reconcile later. Again, consult your tax professional for personal advice on reporting side jobs on your Schedule C.

Facts, I just learned a lot I haven't had Insurance in years but I need some now and I probably owe the IRS a bunch of money😬🤦‍♂️. The thing is I do have a job now but I can't afford $55 a week for some BS insurance. I called up an aging cuz I got something in the mail from the IRS saying somebody in your household last year didn't have medical insurance and can get premium tax credits and that was me. I was offered a plan for ALMOST $0 on everything, a few co-pays here and there and specialists and a few other things. I told the person I'll call them back because I heard you can't pick your doctor and there's other things that aren't good about it but at this point I might as well just take the Obamacare because what other options do I have?? I Def need insurance... If you see this and have any suggestions I would gladly appreciate it 🙏🏼
@OrchidManor
@OrchidManor Год назад
If you qualify for the tax credit then it makes sense to take it rather than going uninsured. If you're in the low to mid income range (under 200% FPL, aspe.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/documents/4b515876c4674466423975826ac57583/Guidelines-2022.pdf) then choose a plan that has $0 or low deductible, copays for primary care & specialist visits, and a low out-of pocket max (less than $3,000). You'll likely find your best plans in the "silver" level plans. If you have doctors you like or special medications, make sure to ask your agent to help you check those for you too. You should be able to choose any doctor in that insurance company's network and you should be able to change your designated "Primary Care Physician." Sometimes you have to get a referral from your PCP to see a specialist, but sometimes you don't, so it's good to look at your benefit summary to understand your plan. Ask for a copy of the benefit summary.

Whether an individual plan, an employee group plan, medicaid or medicare, every health plan has a network. Depending on the plan, It's important to know how to find network providers. Every company will have a directory of contracted doctors, clinics, hospitals, pharmacies, etc.

Hello there, thank you for making the video great job. I have a couple of questions regarding medical insurance, I got laid off yesterday but I'm in workers comp right now in my case what type of insurance can I get in my situation my income is higher, but I'm hurt right now, and workers comp pay. I feel my case is a little tricky :/ do you have any advice? I'm in California. One more question, if I'm in workers comp do I need to get insurance?? Even if I'm not employed by my old company?
@OrchidManor
@OrchidManor Год назад
Thanks for your comment! If you lost your health insurance at work it's good to get another one since the employer generally pays for injuries that happened at work but not illnesses or injuries outside of work. So the tricky part is projecting your income for 2023 for obamacare. If you will be out of work for a while, but believe you'll go back to work, have other self employment "earned income" or other taxable income this year, then your income projection should be lower than your normal federal AGI/MAGI and perhaps put you in qualifying range for premium tax credit. When you go back to getting regular earned income, you can re-calculate and adjust your projection with coveredca state exchange, or get back on the job or new job's group insurance, whichever applies. Workman's compensation does not count as part of your MAGI. Since you're receiving income from from workmans comp you may not qualify for california medicaid/mediCal if it's above their income limit because medicaid eligibility, on the other hand, counts workman's comp as income. Hope this makes sense & helps you. If you're married, then it's joint income for the purpose of obamacare...

@OrchidManor Год назад
Medicaid is supposed to service the lowest income brackets. If you live in one of the 12 states that did NOT expand their medicaid programs Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Wisconsin and Wyoming, then that's where you fall into the coverage gap. If you are not in one of those states, then you should be able to get Medicaid if you're a U.S. citizen or at least 5 years green card holder. Obamacare has minimum incomes to qualify for the premium tax credit subsidies. The incomes for ACA/Obamacare are based on projected incomes for 2023...

Hi, nice video 😊 Salina, I have a question: I live in Florida and I have a insurance plan with Oscar Health, I travel to other states frequently (TX and GA). Can I use my plan in this states? According to your coment in 17:25 (I’m confused)
@OrchidManor
@OrchidManor 10 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching! As of 2023, Oscar will only pay for emergencies out-of-network, and out-of-state is considered out-of-network with Oscar. When emergencies are treated at out-of-network Hospitals, Oscar will pay at "in-network" rates only. So if that's not enough payment for the out-of-network hospital for an emergency, you may get "balanced-billed" If you want a policy that "travels" out-of-state consider for example certain Ambetter plans. You'd be able to use some Ambetter plans anywhere there is an Ambetter network. However, not all Ambetter plans travel, just certain ones will travel. An example of another plan that travels is Kaiser Permanente, where all Kaisers are considered "in-network" Very few carriers will have a network out-of-state, but hospital emergencies (real emergencies) must be covered. Just be aware you can be balanced billed.

Thank you so much for your video 🙏. I have a question. I’m green card holder. I have a ChampVA insurance VA family. My husband is retired and I am unemployed I will file tax with my husband. So, it means I can’t apply for Obamacare ma’am?
@OrchidManor
@OrchidManor Год назад
Hi, thanks for watching & great question! As long as you are qualified for CHAMPVA insurance, you don't need to buy additional coverage. Additionally, being eligible for CHAMPVA would make you disqualified to take the obamacare premium tax credit. ALSO, IF you ever in the future become eligible for Medicare, then you should apply for Medicare, and you can have Medicare and CHAMPVA at the same time.

Inquiring for a friend, If someone is Homeless, with no job, or money😥, (Who is in desperate need of Healthcare!! 👨‍⚕️) Can they qualify and get Health insurance coverage with Obamacare and or Florida blue? What Health care provider, or Healthcare Coverage Plan would be right for them.
@OrchidManor
@OrchidManor Год назад
No they wouldn't qualify for the tax credit. They'd have to have income & file taxes. They can apply for state Medicaid. IF they're in a non-expansion state, then Medicaid will be hard to get. Medicaid expansion means there's typically some form of free insurance (managed by the states) available for adults ages 19-64 who earn below the minimum income qualifications for obamacare. Til now (3/2023) there are still 11 states holding out to expand their medicaid programs. Here is a list of expansion & non-expansion states. www.kff.org/medicaid/issue-brief/status-of-state-medicaid-expansion-decisions-interactive-map/ Some of those 11 non-expansion states may l still offer Medicaid to pregnant woment or really disabled people such as blind or on dialysis for example. Either way, it doesn't hurt to apply. Just google medicaid & the name of your state to get the info for your state. If your friend is 65 or older, they should be able to get medicaid in any state. Check your state's medicaid website for eligibility guidelines. If medicaid is not available, your friend could try going to a local big hospital or big medical system. Ask about their facility's financial aid programs. Many big healthcare systems have some form of charity medical programs where you can just go there for some services for free or low cost temporarily until they get back on their feet.

The general idea on how it's supposed to work is while you're working for a company that offers insurance, you should be covered there. When your employment ends & you lose that insurance, then you can get the obamacare as long as you apply within 60 days of losing the insurance & get a "special enrollment." (You can apply before you actually lose it so you don't have a gap.) When you become eligible to enroll with the next employer's group insurance, then you enroll & manually cancel your obamacare.

Are the advanced credit payments an advance of my income tax? Just confused where the money directly comes from? Are they using the estimated credit payments for healthcare based on what my income tax will be and then giving me that money in advance to cover? Or is my income tax and the advanced payments completely separate?
@OrchidManor
@OrchidManor Год назад
APTC are payments made by the federal government to the insurance companies. The money comes from the government. Where they get it is another story. 2023 insurance credit is based on 2023 household & income projections, and then paid in advance directly to your insurance company monthly. You reconcile the subsidy amount you (your insurance company) received after the end of the year (the following year) when you file the 2023 tax return.. If you projected your household size & MAGI correctly then you're even with the IRS & you won't owe them & they won't owe you either for the health insurance when you file for that year.

@OrchidManor Год назад
The best place to start is to ask your good friends to see if they can recommend a knowlegeable trusted agent they bought their obamacare with and have had good experience with. Another way is to go on the official federal government website for Texas (and many other states) www.healthcare.gov and click on "Find Local Help" to get a random licensed agent.
@BIGBOYREDGIE
@BIGBOYREDGIE Год назад
You just call the marketplace itself you don't need an agent. I've been doing it for 6 years now.
@OrchidManor
@OrchidManor Год назад
If you want advice, recommendations and explanations of plans, you'll need a Licensed Agent. If you call the Marketplace and get a customer service rep, they are not allowed to give you any advice because they're not licensed. They will just ask you questions, read from a script, and type your answers. So what works for you may not work for everyone. Also, when you have a Licensed Agent, it doesn't cost you anything extra, the prices are the same, but a knowlegeable agent can be of great benefit when you're not absolutely clear on how things work on that system or need to find the best plans for your personal & medical situations.

Does the ACA make you get insurance for adult children that come back to live with you and they don’t work?
@OrchidManor
@OrchidManor 3 месяца назад
Hi! You don't "have to" buy insurance for anyone, but of course it makes good financial sense for everyone to be covered. That being said, you can purchase insurance for adult children up thru age 25 on your employer's group health plan, or you can apply for health insurance for any adult "tax dependent" and possibly get a tax credit to reduce the price if you qualify based on the many factors discussed in the video.

Do they factor in net worth or strictly income? What about dividends earned through a Roth IRA, but not withdrawn?
@OrchidManor
@OrchidManor Год назад
Great question! Your net worth is not a factor. Refer to 8:00 (around 8 minutes of the video) about "Modified Adjusted Gross Income." Whatever is happening in your Roth IRA is not counted in MAGI. Distributions from Roth IRA if done right and non-taxable will also not be included in MAGI

Hi, if I was eligible for the premium tax credit but chose to not use it for my health insurance, will I get to claim the full credit amount at the end of the year when I file for taxes and will that help increase my tax refund?
@OrchidManor
@OrchidManor Год назад
You should receive a refund of the unused credit (for each month your insurance was active) when you file your tax return *IF* your Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) ends up being what you applied at. You can see the income you applied at on your previous eligibility letter. Additionally, your tax household size must also match with the original obamacare application too, to ensure you get your expected amount back. Be sure to file your taxes with the 1095A form you'll receive in January in order to properly reconcile it. Some state-based exchanges (not part of healthcare .gov) may have an additional state-based premium tax form to reconcile too.

Tax credit explained at 5:53 in the video. Tax credit is government assistance. For a lot of people, but not all people, go for Silver plans. Depending on which income bracket you fall in, the silver plans may have lower copays, deductibles, coinsurance and out-of-pocket maximums.

Help, here is my situation, household of 2, only 1 income =90k, current employer sponsored insurance =800 per month with both in household. How can I remove one person from company insurance that will reduce monthly to 160 and get separate insurance for other household member.
@OrchidManor
@OrchidManor Год назад
Hey there! Usually if you're already together on the job insurance they won't let you make a change until your next open enrollment period at the job. Pls re-check your "employee only" vs "employee + spouse" premiums at work. It's common that at the job you're paying $800/month for husband & wife, but it's very surprising to hear that removing the spouse only saves $160/month and the employee alone would pay $640/month (?). It's more common the other way around.... that adding the spouse is what jacks up the premium, and if it was "employee only" it should be less than half... All that being said, if you're expecting to file tax family of 2 with an MAGI of $90,000 it may or may not save you money for the spouse only to get private *qualified* (real) health insurance. Depending on the spouse's age, it can easily be $300-$1000+ monthly for the spouse's insurance when you don't qualify for the tax credit (subsidy) based on $90,000 income. At that income you *may* qualify for a small credit for the spouse if they are over 50 or 55 years of age. The younger the spouse, the better, if you want them to break out to to purchase on the marketplace (or state-based exchange depending on your state). You may be even able to get better one depending on the comparison of plan benefits. Either way, you'll most likely need to evaluate all this during the next open enrollment. Hope this helps!

@OrchidManor

On the ACA/Obamacare system, there are various insurance companies available depending on your state & county. All the plans are different as far as co-pays, deductibles, coinsurance & out of pocket maximums. These plans sold on the federal marketplace and state-based exchanges have to cover minimum essential benefits (you can see in the video at around 3.25)

Yw! specifically, for 2023, if the cheapest plan to add your spouse to your job's insurance is more than 9.12% of your tax household income, then your spouse can go for marketplace insurance and possibly qualify for tax credit. The employee only would still be ineligible for tax credit & need to take the work insurance if the cheapest "employee only" coverage at the job is under 9.12% of household income (which most company insurance is, by this standard, deemed "affordable")

If you don't have the opportunity to get insurance thru work, the military, medicaid or medicare, then private health insurance / obamacare / ACA may be your only way to get "real" qualified health insurance. As the video explains, you choose from the insurance companies and plans that are actually offered in your county. Some counties may have only 1 company to choose, and other places may have several companies. Some insurance companies may only have HMO available. Some companies may have options between HMO, EPO, POS, PPO, etc. The most important thing is just make sure no matter which plan you choose, stay in your network. More explained about this at 17:50 in the video.

Sorry, is tax credit the same as tax allowance (you pay less tax due to certain expenses or because you have got child) or is it subsidy (you get money from government), or something else?
@OrchidManor
@OrchidManor Год назад
Tax credit is cash money given out on your behalf. For example "child tax credit" is money paid to you, either directly like they did monthly July thru December of 2021, or on your taxes when filed coming in as refund or reduction of taxes you owe... "Earned income credit" is another example of direct cash payments. For obamacare, as explained in detail in the video, the "advanced premium tax credit" is money the government pays to the insurance company on your behalf to help you pay for the insurance. It is a subsidy.

Since the Affordable Care Act law (Obamacare) was passed, there are no health questions and all pre-existing conditions are covered from day 1 of your effective date. There is no special waiting period after your policy goes into effect. Depending on your state and eligibility, you may qualify for a "special enrollment" situation and get coverage earlier too.

So If the CHEAPEST aca-compliant EMPLOYEE ONLY insurance is LESS than 9.12% of the HOUSEHOLD income, then the employee needs to take the employee coverage at the job. (2023 ruling) If the cheapest EMPLOYEE+FAMILY (or employee+spouse) plan at work is MORE THAN 9.12% of the HOUSEHOLD income, the SPOUSE and/or KIDS don't have to be on that job's insurance (as long as the spouse's job doesn't offer them insurance too) Based on this 9.12% affordability rule, in most situations, the job insurance is "affordable" for the employee but is unaffordable for an estimated 7,800,000 family members & dependents to join into the employee's job plan. (KFF 2021 report) I hope this make sense the way I'm explaining it!

If I am on ObamaCare can my college student be covered until age 26? Thanks
@OrchidManor
@OrchidManor Год назад
This depends on whether or not you are applying and qualify for a premium tax credit to help pay for the obamacare. If you are applying and getting a premium tax credit to help pay for your 2023 obamacare, then you can only carry your college student/child on your 2023 obamacare application if he/she is going to be your tax dependent on your 2023 tax return that you will file in 2024... because both your tax credits will have to be reconciled to your 2023 taxes. If your student/child is not going to be on your taxes as a dependent, then he/she has to either apply by themselves if they will file their own taxes & not be claimed by anyone, OR apply on the/an obamacare application with the tax household they will be on taxes with. If you are paying FULL price for your obamacare and NOT applying for any premium tax credit, then yes, you can buy a full price plan together with your son/daughter and be on the same policy until they turn 26. There is no 1095A to reconcile in this situation. Hope all this makes sense!

@OrchidManor
@OrchidManor Год назад
Qualifying $500/month credit for a $500/month policy means you pay $0/month for that plan. It is an "advanced" premium tax credit (APTC). As explained in the video, at the end of the covered year, when you file your taxes & reconcile, if your income matches your previously projected income and everything else matches up, then no, it won't affect your taxes. But if you file more than you projected, or for some reason didn't properly qualify for all the tax credit your received, you can expect to pay back some or all undeserved portion of the credit on your taxes.

This is a different situation. If your job offers you "real" health insurance (by government standard), you most likely need to take it. There are few exceptions. It depends... When you say "private insurance" what kind is it exactly? Is it "real" insurance meeting the ACA standards? When is your baby due? Neither one of you have employer offered insurance? It's hard to answer without knowing more details. If neither of your jobs offer real health insurance, depending on your tax household size & income bracket, obamacare may be good if you are in lower to middle income and cannot qualify for pregnancy medicaid. If your tax family size is small, and your combined income is high, obamacare may seem expensive to you. Depending on what your current insurance is, you may OR may not be able to enroll after the open enrollment deadline so you have to choose carefully. If your baby is due next year, and you don't qualify for your state's Medicaid, you may have to do some math to see if obamacare or your current insurance will be better for 2023. Also, depending on what kind of insurance you currently have, you may or may not be able to have it at the same time as obamacare if you are applying for the premium tax credit to help pay for the obamacare. So many questions to ask in order to give you right advice here.

What you see on the marketplace is "private insurance." If you don't qualify or want the tax credit, then you just have to pay the full base price of the plan. Some of those same insurance campanies may offer some of the plans off-exchange meaning buy directly, but the prices are nearly the same or a few dollars cheaper & may offer a few plan structures not seen on the marketplace. Other plans being sold, such as healthshare, short-term medical & indemnity plans, will not meet federal and/or state standards and oftentimes referred to as "junk plans." Unlike standardized plans, they may not cover a lot of essential benefits and often don't cover pre-existing conditions.

What about a 26 plus child who still lives at home? Works part time and goes to college?
@OrchidManor
@OrchidManor 10 месяцев назад
Hi! First, determine if they will file taxes on their own in the future or be your tax dependent. Review this part at 6:34 for how tax credit works as it relates to how taxes will be filed. If they're for example single, no dependents, and filing their own taxes, they should apply for ACA/Obamacare on their own and whether or not they qualify for the tax credit will depend on if their projected income is above the minimum. If their income is below the minimum, hopefully you live in a state that has expanded medicaid. If your state hasn't expanded their medicaid program & generally doesn't have medicaid for low income adults, then that's unfortunate because many states still have a "gap" of people in their population who fall below the threshold to get the tax credit & same time can't get medicaid. In that case, they'll have to pay full price for their ACA/Obamacare health insurance and it will be hundreds of dollars. Until those few states get elected officials to expand their medicaid, they will continue to have that "gap" of the population that are not served well. As of 2023, those states are Wyoming, Kansas, Texas, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and Florida

Unfortunately Tenessee is one of those states that hasn't expanded their Medicaid. So they will need to : 1.) If filing taxes single, then apply for obamacare on his/her own & must meet the minimum income to qualify tax credit... 2.) Make under less than roughly $4,000 per year & be filed as someone else's tax dependent (such as a parent or whoever financially supports him/her), in which case the applicant on the ACA/Obamacare/Marketplace application will be the head of the tax household, and then the tax credit for him/her to get insurance will be based the tax household's income & size... 3.) Apply on his/her own and pay full price for ACA/Obamacare if they're in the "gap" I mentioned before

In terms of real health insurance with comprehensive benefits, there mainly is just medicaid, medicare, obamacare, employer group, military... Most other plans are what they call "junk plans." If your income is too low for obamacare, and you live in a state that didn't expand medicaid to regular adults, then try going to a local hospital and see if they have a special program for low-income uninsured. Some hospitals have special programs for this and you can only go there for services & meds.

Great question! If you work fulltime & your job offers insurance, you need to enroll during the open enrollment period at work. Later, when you go part-time & get kicked off your job's insurance because you lack the necessary work hours to stay on, then you can apply for obamacare because losing job insurance triggers a special enrollment situation, in most cases within 60 days of losing job insurance.
@OrchidManor
@OrchidManor Год назад
Additionally, when do you plan to go part-time is another question. If you will be part-time by January 1st, and won't qualify for group health at that time, then you can qualify for obamacare credit for January 1st effective date. Or if you will be part-time by February 1st & not qualify for job insurance by then, you can enroll during ACA open enrollment for Feb 1st start date. But if your date to go part-time is beyond that, you need to be on your job's insurance until you get kicked off later & then go on obamacare with special enrollment situation outside of ACA open enrollment as previously explained.
