What are enhanced diagnostics? How do you use enhanced diagnostics?
Well…On this episode of OBD 4 Everyone we are going to show you how to set up and use OBD Fusion $15 Enhanced Diagnostics add-on.
Enhanced diagnostics gives you access to the same information that the dealership mechanic can see with their expensive scanners.
This can be very helpful when trouble shooting a problem or when doing some types of vehicle maintenance.
For example:Some cars require the automatic transmission fluid to be a specific temperature when checking the level. Enhanced diagnostics can tell you the fluid temperature.
BUT, keep in mind, different vehicles will have different modules and different PIDs.OBD Fusion is available for iOS and Android.

OBD4Everyone I believe the Ford's PATS system are the same on most models. Last year I had the PCM replaced because of a failure of the vehicle security system that was part of the PCM. Big Bucks! I only have 22,000 miles on the truck. I had a no crank, no start with the security light flashing. What’s the process of testing that system or can it not be tested? I have been a wrench turner all my life (68 yrs) this electronic control is all new to me, I have been trying to teach myself all I can. Speaking of “CAN” high & low module communications. 5 volt reference and powers & grounds.

Hey aymenoo almtowaq, Thanks for your kind words on the channel! To answer your question "is it safe to use while driving", that's difficult for me to answer. After testing on my Infiniti G37 everything seems to operate fine. BUT I have no idea on other cars. Some ECUs can have problems when trying to control the operation of a car and also operate in the enhanced diagnostics mode. You could find a large parking lot (or some other place with a large open area) and test it yourself. OR if you don't want to take a chance, only use the enhanced diagnostics while parked.

Thanks for that very informative video ! 🙂 I have an OBDlink MX+ with the OBDlink app and my car is a Nissan (2009 XTerra). The OBDlink app looks just the same as OBD Fusion ... I'm guessing they are the same ? Also, would you know the best way to know which Nissan enhanced PIDs are "active" on a given Nissan model ? I selected some PIDs for viewing but they don't seem to return any values ?
@OBD4Everyone
@OBD4Everyone Год назад
OBDFusion and OBDLink are the same app, but OBDLink is free and only works with OBDLink devices. As for a list of active PIDs for each Nissan model, I don't have anything like that... I don't even have a list for my own Nissan. If you want to find out what PIDs are active for you car, you could data log all PIDs for each module and then review the logs. Some of the PID descriptions are difficult to understand. Most of them are described in the factory shop manual in the EC section. You can download them for free at nico club dot com. Goo luck!

I would love to... however, since this is a self funded channel I have to be very careful in where the money is spent. It is easy to ask for what you would like.... but it cost money to pay for the device, then hours of testing, scripting, shooting and editing. As the channel grows, I will be able to do more. Until then, I will do what I can.

Does this or any app allow you to see if you have any ECU/TCM updates available? Also, any app gives you the degree of which your wheels are pointing? I believe my steering wheel is ever-so-slightly tilted while going straight, however, I am not 100% sure. I bought the Veepeak VP11 that you recommended. Thanks so much
@OBD4Everyone
@OBD4Everyone 5 лет назад
Hey Nicolas Langel, There is no app that I know of that can check for updates. The easiest way is to visit your dealer. If you want to do it yourself, you need special hardware and software that supports J2534-1 and a subscription to nissan-techinfo.com. This is not cheap! Most cars do have a steering wheel position sensor and the enhanced diagnostics should be able to read it. (It does on my G37) BUT the allowed spec allows it to be within 8 degrees, so that is not useful for your purpose. If you steering wheel is just off a little, you may want to check your tire pressure, one tire could be a little low. Generally a slightly tilted steering wheel is nothing to worry about.

Hello and great vid bro. I have the OBD Fusion running enhanced diagnostics, connected via BT on the Veepeak dongle. This successfully allowed me to diagnose faulty brake fluid pressure sensor, by accessing ABS info. Thank you very much for the help with this vid by the way. Also tried the Nissan Data Scan ll, which actually has the idle points available, but the adjustments seem to be virtual and will never actually alter engine idle. Any thoughts would be very appreciated. I am hoping you may know of a solution that would allow an engine idle adjustment on a first gen Nissan Titan.

But when I try and scan the Body Control Module or Network C I get an error code saying that I am connected to the scanner but the scanner can't connect to the car. Hey D Griffin, The options in the advanced diagnostics are vehicle specific and some may have a fault history or not have it. As far as I know on the Infiniti/Nissan advanced diagnostics, there is nothing there that shows any type of past fault history. Using OBDFusion's diagnostic report, on my 2011 Infiniti G37, it does show the number of miles/Km since the trouble code was cleared, but does not show the code, unless it is a permanent code that hasn't been cleared by the ECM yet.

Since your vehicle is different than mine, it will have different networks available. Also, most Ford and Mazda have two different networks (HS and MS) that only the better scan tools can connect to both. @OBD4Everyone
@OBD4Everyone 2 года назад
Not every engine issue has a code. Sometimes you need to troubleshoot the symptom. If you don't have heat, there is a problem/issue in the cooling system. I would suggest you look at the coolant temps. Maybe your thermostat isn't opening fully and restricting coolant flow to the rad, resulting in a hotter than normal temperature -or- your heater core is plugged.
@NG-VQ37VHR
@NG-VQ37VHR 2 года назад
It's possibly a thermostat issue. But look for leaks and also check you coolant level. You could just be very low on coolant, which would cause your over heating and no heat problems. Even if it looks like your coolant is full, you could have a trapped air pocket in the cooling system. Which could still give you the same symptoms, even though it appears full.

What does it mean if the catalyst is available but not ready?
@OBD4Everyone
@OBD4Everyone 3 года назад
Hey Ryan Schweitz, Excellent question! The emission components are always being tested to make sure they are functioning. Some are tested all the time and other are only tested during a very specific way of warm up and driving. These are called "non-continuous monitors" In your case, your non-continuous catalyst test (aka monitor) has not run to completion. If you google your year, make and model of car, you should be able to find the way you need to drive (aka drive cycle) for the monitor to run. Generally, the catalyst monitors are fairly easy to get to run.

I really appreciate you looking. I reached out to the obd fusion folks, and they confirmed support for cvt temp, so I purchased the app and the 2015 Nissan addon. Sure enough, I can now monitor my cvt fluid temp. I haven’t been able to find a pid for the deterioration date as listed in the cvtz50 android app. I again reached out to the fusion guys, and he wasn’t sure either. This pid stuff seems like secret stuff. Not sure how cvtz50 dev got ahold of what fusion hasn’t. Anyway, keep up the great series!

Hey Ryan Walker, Thanks for the update on this. What module did the CVT temp show up in? The standard PIDs are all documented and Wikipedia has a nice list. The enhanced PIDs are manufacturer specific either purchased from the them (like OBD Fusion) or they are reversed engineered from other scan tools. So, they are typically not easy to find.

Hey hjalsadah, I did the test the next day, but I couldn't remember who or where the question was asked. - Sorry! I had no luck. The OBDFusion app with enhanced diagnostic does show a "sonar & ranging" (or something like that) but didn't show any sensors, or any PIDs. Then I dug up the wiring diagram and found out those sensors are connected to a control module that is not on the CAN bus, but the much older K-line network. I think that may explain why OBDFusion can't see it, but the dealer using a Consult 3 can see it. So, I don't think OBDFusion can help you resolve with your issue.

I have used Fixd, Bluedriver and OBD Fusion. Fixd and Bluedriver are more for people who are new to cars. They give you their best guess what the issue may be. OBDFusion is more for people who have a good understanding of how an engine works and provides A LOT of data to help you decide where to troubleshoot. A future episode will compare them and show strength and weaknesses of each.

Have Mazda 6, 2007. But, 2007 is new model come out, but my is older.. In tjat case, what year to use?
@OBD4Everyone
@OBD4Everyone 5 лет назад
Hey Tomislav Nikolić, That is a difficult question to answer as it depends on how much the engine computer (ECU) changed for the new model. As far as I can tell, most of the engines from the older generation are used in the 2007+ Mazda 6, so there is a good chance that it may work. I think a better option is to have a look at FORScan: forscan.org/home.html It is designed to work with almost all Ford, Lincoln and Mazda vehicles. It is available for iOS, Android and Windows. In looking at the website, it looks like it supports the Mazda 6 from 2002 - present. I have used it on a 2015 Mazda 3 with my iPad and it worked well.

Hey D Griffen, Cars and trucks made before 2008 don't have a standardized OBD system (CAN bus) and the manufacture decided how modules communicate. Since your vehicle is a 2004 that might be why you don't see the engine control module. You can always contact OBDFusion support: obdsoftware.force.com/s/ and ask them. Good Luck!

Thank you so much, you are very knowledgeable. I am communicating with OBD Fusion on a regular basis. Here’s a response I received from them, if I may: There is an SAE PID that allows you to see 'Distance traveled since DTCs cleared'. However, this would apply to the emissions-related codes that cause the MIL to activate and not other codes. Unfortunately, I'm not seeing PIDs for the other items you are requesting in our enhanced database. We are limited by the PIDs that we receive from the manufacturer, and these do not include these items. I'm sorry that I don't have better news! I was inquiring about miles driven since last trouble code was cleared, and which code it was. Very helpful when purchasing used car from private party. I wonder if the information I seek isn’t available on cars that predate 2008, I think that’s what we are seeing here? Thank you so much for your dedication to our questions. We appreciate you very much!! We are always looking for other ways to show support besides like and subscribe and bang the bell. Let us know what we can do for you, please. Most of us have cameras, too! We are looking forward to your new videos. God Bless
@OBD4Everyone
@OBD4Everyone 4 года назад
Hey D Griffen, I think your conclusion is correct, before CAN bus was mandated (2008) things were a little all over the place and the manufacturer could do a lot or very little. Since 2008, there is are mandatory PIDs that must be supported. I know I am a little behind on new content... My e-learning company (SpurGear.ca) has required all my time (which is good!!) but the downside is no new content. I should have a few new episodes out by the end of next month. As for answering questions, I have learned a lot by researching them to be able to answer accurately. (hopefully!!) Thanks for your comment!

can you read fuel pressure on a 3.7 with obd fusion?
@OBD4Everyone
@OBD4Everyone 5 лет назад
Hey Infigure, Since there is no fuel pressure sensor, the engine computer doesn't know the actual pressure. It just assumes it is at the factory spec of 52 PSI and will use the air/fuel sensors to trim the fuel to keep it on target. The only way to measure fuel pressure it to install a "fuel tap" (like this one: cj-motorsports.com/products/fuel-tap-npt-2-bolt) and add a pressure gauge or sensor. On a future episode on my other channel Motorvate DIY (ru-vid.com), I will be adding a fuel tap (the one above) and a pressure sensor to show how to check the fuel pressure and to see how much the fuel pressure changes for different driving conditions. It should be very interesting!
