Glad to see a video from you after so long. Your demos always have stand alone entertaining value, while also giving us potential buyers the gear centric focus to help us discern a synths character. I'm really loving basically everything i hear from the OB-6, which is saying a lot because for the most part i dont like a synth to make me think of 80s. Sidenote, I hope Dave Smith and Tom Oberheim make a modern day OB-X style synth next! (and a pro-2 with additional AS-1 oscillators)
Jonathan Osborn cheers dude! This year was a whirlwind with the European tour and finishing the next INHALT ep so less time for sound design but there will be more. Next will be Townhouse Studios AMS RMX 16 reverb responses. A serious comprehensive library.
I've never heard a synth with the name Oberheim on it that didn't sound flipping amazing. I don't know if its the filters or what, they sound magical to my ears.
Much better than a lot of other demonstrations, thank you for that! The patch at 16:59 is really beautiful to my ears, but that vintage rusty quality is rarely demonstrated in this synth.
@@aevin_io Ahh this is relatable. I'm thinking about selling my Sub37, the filter sounds harsh and phony. Love my P6 and would love a OB6 or a Moog Matriarch ;)
10:30 Pacific State (actually originally 808 created this on a Juno then run thru the filter of a Casio FZ-1, the chord itself sampled, and then that one finger sample played in that progression.)
Ah the CASIO FX samplers, secret ingredient of so many early UK and German Dance tracks. It was years before I discovered that APHEX TWIN's Selected Ambient Works II was largely produced on the CASIO FZ-10M, giving sounds their organic, saturated edge. After reading some interview with him back in the day I thought he was using some DIY sampler he had built himself. Turns out that in that interview he was totally trolling to throw off transpotters and would-be biters, and in reality he mostly used stuff like the OB Matrix-1000 and FZ-10m.
Love your style Matia. I bought your patches first for my Prophet 08 3 years ago. I since sold the 08, I have been lusting for a OB-6 for some time now after finding I really click with it's sound. Finally I have one! Of course I had to buy your soundset :) In inspiration for me as I hope to improve my own skills in patch programming.
The band ended up splitting up straight away so you may have cursed us there.. Haha :) I just do my own game music work now really besides a bit of guitar in a heavy alternative project.
@@INHALTVIDEO Ah! I just listened to some of those 202 remixes and heard one with the synth chord lines played "clean" (i.e. without other sounds layers over like the original track). I totally hear the cross pollination. Now I wonder who borrowed whose synth sample LOL. 808 State or Isotonik? But wouldn't surprise me if 808 State was the original since Isotonik already borrowed a huge chunk of Ralphie Rosario's track and Beltram's hoover. Different Strokes is Ice Cube's Jackin' for Beats of the rave/breakbeat/hardcore era. LOL. Anyhow, back to business, thanks for the awesome patch set. I purchased your patches and played a few in my music jam with friends last night. Good stuff. Thanks again.
@@INHALTVIDEO Hello, congrats as it's a nice sounding work :) Can you tell me if the first sound of the video is from the factory or artist bank? Thanks in advance
Just buy it.. the lack of polyphony is not a huge issue.. you do need to adjust release times and playing style for chord changes but once you play with it you totally ignore the voice limitation
Man, I got an OB-6 and loved it, but had to return it because of some voice issues. I'm on the fence about getting a replacement as I am seeing that Sequential is likely reissuing the OBX soon. I keep coming back to this video as it is by far the best demo of the OB-6 on YT. I loved the machine, but did find it a bit sterile in some spots, missing the bite and depth of the original Oberheims. I loved stacking the voices for detuned, unison bass tones. I will say it sounded a bit thin at times in the higher octaves, and it's very easy to wander into cheesy, brassy tones that made me cringe. I would have loved to have had it closer in sound to the SEM than the newer Prophets, as it is advertised as being more or less a 6 voice SEM. I'm wondering if the OBX reissue will have more of the old Oberheim character as it will be a genuine reissue rather than a totally new synth like the OB6. One thing I will bet is that it will replace the OB6 as this thing is getting on its production lifespan. What if I wait and it sucks in comparison? What if I get another OB6 and after the 30-day return window is over the OBX comes out and is mind-blowing?
I have just ordered an OB-6! I have been flip flopping between the P6 and OB6 for almost a year, and just decided to pull the trigger. Why do you think they will reissue the OBX? Maybe I should wait until that gets released? I dunno, the more I listen to OB-6 demos, the less I connect with the synth. Have you tried a P6? What was your take on it?
@@MusicZeroOne I bought the P6!! I fkn love it. I realised that I sort of 'wanted' to want the OB6. I mean, I like the sound of it, but I didn't love it. It is sort of too 'classic 80s' sounding. The filter colours everything you make with it, and I think that may have made me feel a little restricted. The bass on the P6 is unbelievable. Have already made near-perfect bass presets for two songs for my band, took me like 5 minutes. Its super versatile. I'd say if you're looking for a workhorse/go-to synth, the P6 beats the OB6!! Just my 2 cents. I'm sure if I got the OB6, I would be replying to you saying how much I love the filter, and how beautiful every patch is that you make on it because of the SEM filters! But yeah, for versatility in a hardware synth, that is very hands-on and can sound vintage, the P6 is perfect.
@@ed7132 That's awesome mate, glad you've found the one you like. I do believe you need to go with your heart on these things, especially with the price of them! Well... my OB-6 landed this morning haha So yeah. I'm enjoying it so far, just preset digging at the moment. And you are spot on, I mostly want to do 80's/horror stuff so this is perfect. I think we both made the 'right' choice for our needs. We do live in a glorious era for synths don't we? Take care and thanks for the update!
@@INHALTVIDEO The exact CS80 Vangelis used to compose "Chariots of Fire"... where the heck is it today?! That might actually be the world's most valuable synth ever. No?
silvertongues2 did you pick up this sound bank. The nice thing about the ob6 is that it will flash when you are off the saved parameter and I believe add a dot on the led numeric display. So if you have the sound bank you can put all the values on the panel to what they are on the patch and see my settings. I also believe there’s a 7 in that chord. It’s using chord memory.
They just HAD to cut the corner didn’t they? Dave Smith seems to be in business of cutting corners. All for what? So it can be a couple hundred cheaper? Baloney. Not worth it. He can’t weigh scales. It’s a great synth, but it’s full of “could have been” ‘s
Este Synth es el mejor que puedes tener en tu Studio, yo recomiendo el DSI OB-6 es un clasico pero tiene mejor calidad de sonidos y es pasivo, nada que ver con los Prophets.
