I have a 1997 k1500 Silverado 4wd, with the 5.7L V8. I am the original owner, it has 190k miles on it. I have taken very good care of my truck. I get people all the time telling me "That's a good looking truck, you wanna sell it?" Nope, never selling it. This truck has been the best vehicle I have ever owned. It has had a transmission repair from towing a large boat for many years, and a fuel system replacement. Otherwise, there is not a thing wrong with this truck. Only wish the built vehicles now like they used to.

My 96 C1500 Silverado 4.3L has 400k on the original engine/transmission and it still runs and shifts silky smooth. Have had it since 30k. Tail lights can be a problem until you come across a good circuit board set. And at this age, its the wiring that's starting to have problems. Keep changing the oil/transmission fluid and don't beat the crap out of your truck and your golden.

@bottomtext1241
@bottomtext1241 Год назад
You said the engines are great "just don't ask it to do what it's not meant to do". I have a 94 C1500 Silverado I bought from my father in law. Stock it came with the 4.3L with the TBI. With a V6, rear wheel drive and stock leaf springs he cut a hole in the bed and welded in a hitch for a gooseneck which he used to haul a horse trailer full of donkeys, goats, generators and all sorts of heavy loads. The leaf springs would be maxed out and he would have it just screaming down the road hauling that trailer. Never a lot of maintenance, put 15 inch wheels with cheap Futura tires on it. That truck still did it's job, drove like a dream. Only major fix was he had the transmission rebuilt about 7 years ago. By the time I had it that motor was well on it's way out but still got me around just fine. Needed oil every week and the brake pads on the front were non-existent to the point of the metal part eating the rotor away. It got me around until I left for boot camp and left it with a friend. When she finally gave out was the day his wife couldn't get it up a hill without flooring it. He got a 350 for it and did the motor swap. Afterwards he took the 4.3 apart and found that almost all the piston rings in number 3 cylinder we're gone and had caused long, Wolverine type scratches down the cylinder wall. Other pistons were missing pieces of rings and they could be found in the pan. I just think it's remarkable how that engine could be so abused and yet it would still run day in and day out. I will always love these trucks and the small block Chevy. I'm happy to say now that truck has brand new suspension and brakes. A now carbureted 350 and an easier life getting me back and forth to work each day. Best vehicle I have ever owned. Long live the Small Block Chevy.

I don't have the pickup version but the SUV version. I own a black 1996 2500 4x4 Suburban SLT with the 7.4L 454 connected to a 4l80e trans and love it. Really reliable and easy to work on. This platform is a reliable workhorse while looking good doing it. It has 118k on it and I keep it clean inside and out. I keep it in the garage because every time it's in the driveway I get several people coming to my door asking if I want to sell it. I also have a 2004 1500 Suburban 4x4 with the 5.3L and a 4l60e trans with 206k on it and is still running very strong with all original drive train still in it. I love them both and don't think I will ever sell or get rid of them. I plan on passing them on to my boys later when they have their families.

The OBS and First Gen Silverado's are probably the best beater truck you can get that you ain't gotta worry bout tearing up. The formers a little easier to work on and fucks aesthetically, but the latter has better gas mileage and is a better truck in most respects.

I have a 96 Silverado, it has 550K miles and still going strong, original motor, oil changed every 4-5k, rebuilt trans at about 380k. super easy to work on. I purchased it in 2008 from original owner friend for $2500 (deal back then) with around 140k. I commuted 1000 miles a week in it for the better part of a decade in Los Angeles traffic, it has a ton of power even loaded with a lot of weight or in my case tools. I don't drive it to work any more but its the best truck iv'e ever had, in fact I upgraded to a new Silverado, same model but over 20 years newer. I still have the old truck, been thinking about passing her on though. I know it in and out and can fix its problems myself. Its always the same things, alternator, breaks, rotors, radiator, battery or O2 sensors so it can pass smog bit I figures out I could reset the battery and drive it a hundred miles or so and the engine light will stay off. I live at 3500 feet above sea level and I suspect driving daily to sea level effects that somehow. Just think about it though, mine has over 550,000 THOUSAND miles on the original motor which still is good, doesn't burn oil and has good oil pressure,doesn't smoke and passes smog. It needs some love but other then a few small things its been real good.

Love the video man awesome review. I have a 98 k 1500 had it for 5 years now been great she just turned 265000 miles. Just keeps on trucking only problem I have is the distributor caps keep going out or cracking. I did replace the trans at 223000 miles not bad I think. I lifted it 2 years ago replace all the steering and balljoints with life time ac Delco parts. Even with the lift still have not had a promise after 2 years with 35 inch tires. This truck is a tank goes were I tell it and does what I ask it to. I would sell it for anything. My son wants it I told he can have it when he can pull the keys out of my died hands ha ha. It's so reliable and easy to fix love them. My dad had one and I have one now great video 👍

I would have to agree with you, the older chevy trucks are amazing. I’m in my early 20s now and I bought my first truck at 17 it was a 2000 Chevy 1500 z71 4x4 with the 5.3 v8 motor I love that truck I’d buy another in a heart beat if I could find one with little to no rust. But since then I’ve upgraded to the 2007-2013 model Silverado’s. They are also pretty nice trucks but the just feel a little cheap but I’m a Chevy guy I love my Chevy trucks 😎👍

great feedback - was looking at some rangers, but now will consider upgrading a bit to something like this. looking for simple builds with high reliability (but you're right, not a lot of examples available out there for sale - people seem to hold on to these)

I drive my 93 Sierra c1500 everyday to work. My grandfather bought it yr before he died and willed it to me in 2002 when I was 5. It sat in yard till 2020. Only major work ever done was transmission and fuel pump. Still has original paint, only one rust stop on roof and people in my town always stop me ask to buy it or look at it. I love it and want another.

Great video. I have a 1998 GMC CK 1500 with 317k miles on her. Yes those darn tail lamps! Its super frustrating to be driving with all your lights working and then all of a sudden your directional bulb on the tailight goes out. Luckily, I have never gotten water in them. It is just because the circuit relay gets so damn hot (the middle bulb holder) and fries it. Its the least of my complaints considering how reliable these trucks are mechanically.

Between my dad and I we’ve had 4. 3 Silverado’s and 1 w/t. 3 were stock 5.7 trucks, only one of which has been rebuilt in to a 383 (just because of a want for a little more power) and one having a 5.0. Each one has served us amazing and have been great trucks.
@traveling.down.the.road56
@traveling.down.the.road56 2 года назад
I just had my 5.7L rebuilt with a longer stroke crankshaft to make it a 383, but I’m not feeling any increase in power or torque. Did you do anything else to the ecm or intake system on your 383 to make it create more power?
@clayj2386
@clayj2386 2 года назад
@@traveling.down.the.road56 all it has done to it that I know of is larger bore and stroke, aluminum intake and long tube headers. And I put a k&n filter and roller tip rockers on it. It doesn’t really make any significant more power
@traveling.down.the.road56
@traveling.down.the.road56 2 года назад
@@clayj2386 thanks for your reply. I’m looking for a local dynamometer to see what my HP and Torque numbers are because I don’t think I’m even getting the factory stock 5.7L power or torque. Plus I’m looking for any other modifications that I can do to max out my towing ability

Agree, these old trucks, if kept up are great vehicles for work and easy for the DIYers who love to work on vehicles. Simple mechanicals, only one computer to control the engine fuel delivery, for the most part nice interiors, and the best part: hugely available parts in the junk yards for almost anything that needs replacement. The aftermarket is still strong for any upgrades needed for this generation of GM truck. And, they don't look outdated in style or looks, IMO.
