@@Andy47357 There is no 6BT without a turbo. The 6BT is literally an acronym for what it is: a 6 cylinder engine, Cummins' B series engine line, with the T standing for turbo, hence 6BT.
Thats because first gen body style ran 72-93. If it wasnt for cummins they wouldve gone out of bussiness. They made up such a small percentage of truck sales compared to ford and gm

My 1st 1996 OBS F350 7.3 had 827,000 miles on it before I sold it to a local landscaper - who still uses daily and now has 964,000 miles on it! My "new" 1997 OBS F250 7.3 with a 5-speed has only 194,000 miles on it. I got it with 97,000 miles. Both trucks gave me ZERO probelms, aside from the first one needing injectors at 460,000 miles. I'm 60 years old, so it will CERTAINLY out live me!
That ain’t no shit personally my dream is to take a 70s f250 and throw a 12v Cummins in it that way I get the Cummins engine without a garbage Chrysler body

I like the wheels and tires on that Ram. And yep, that cursed 2nd gen dash. Underneath the plastic dash cover, the top of mine has fallen apart in huge chunks.....good thing about that, though: I might be able to swap the heater core out without unbolting the dash 😂 Silver lining....
So true! I swapped out the heater core last year and the dash fell apart during the swap on my 01. ...and is the reason I still haven't replaced the dash yet....lol
I have both a tuned Common Rail and an OBS 7.3, and an 02 7.3 as well. Yeah the power on the Cummins trucks is pretty awesome but I personally enjoy the roar of a straight piped 7.3...just get er a decent tuner man

The only reason I think the 2nd gen is my favorite truck is because that was my first truck and it was a hand me down from my dad. And we worked in it for over a year together. So it is the history i have with the 2nd gens. Without the history, I would say the 1st gen is the best
@@richardalaniz556 95 isn’t first gen. He’s comparing ‘99 to ‘95 cause the horsepower difference between the 12V and 7.3. The 24V is more comparable to the Powerstroke. Now if it were a 7.3 IDI the 12V would be the one to compare it to.
Also the 7.3 makes only 5 less hp and the Cummins makes 5 less pound feet so I really don’t get why he’s like the Cummins can pull way better then a 7.3

I own a 97 12 valve single cab long bed 4x4 5 speed. I believe it is the absolute best 90’s diesel to own. I owned a 96 f350 single cab dually with the 7.3 in it. I had absolutely no luck with it. It was a sub 120k miles truck all stock grandpa owned. My biggest issue I had was with the injector circuits being in the valve cover gaskets, my passenger side bank gasket was cracked and the power feed crossed with the power return, fried my injectors, And idm. After I got all of that taken care of anytime I was driving in a field at slow speeds the engine would cut out and run terrible, sometimes I would loose one bank of the engine. Turns out after hours of diagnostic time. It also fried the pigtails that plug into the valve cover gaskets. Aside from that and about 5 cam position sensors. I sold it and bought a 24 valve. After my handful of issues with it. I bought a unmolested 97 12 valve with 90k miles. And it’s has been an amazing piece of equipment with no complaints! Excellent video, the OBS body style is one of my favorites!
My dad bought a 97 crew cab long bed 7.3 4x4 brand new and still has it, when he first got it everybody thought it was weird that he got a crewcab because no one got a crewcab then
Honestly both of these motors are some of the best ever made. 300k on either one is the standard. I personally think the 7.3 even as just a plain IDI is more reliable. But the Cummins beats either in pure raw power. I've long contemplated dropping a 12v 5.9 into a Bronco.
Be sure and change your oil and have great batteries. The idi needs both or it'll strand you. Keep the glow plugs in top shape. The Cummins using the vastly simpler heating grid.
Those 7.3 motors have a sound that is so deeply ingrained in us from our childhoods. Listening for the distinct T444e roar in the distance as we’d quickly gathered our backpacks, shoes and coat to run out the door just in time to meet our bare bones yellow international kid haulers to do another day of school. I remember when I first got my 97 F350, I was stoked ‘my truck has a damn school bus engine yall!’.
@@audimaster5000 i wish my school had T444E's all ours were DT466E's but i do remember in elementry school we had a backup mid-late 80s bus with an idi in it so ingraved in my mind how it sounded, im pretty sure it was a 6.9 idi. i do remember a few international 4700 ambulances with T444E's chattering in the background at sports events, fairs and other events growing up and i fell in love.
Yeah he really didn’t say that, he gave the rpm going up that hill with the 24 valve witch is close to its stock peak torque, but i didn’t hear him say what rpm he was at or the 7.3 , the torque bands are different, the stock 24 valve peak torque is @ 1600 rpm, while the power stoke is @2000, both are rated within 5 hp and lb-ft of each other at their peak
Cummins guy here but always love driving my buddies obs 7.3 For me, it's just nice to feel something different. All the nuances that separate them, makes both trucks enjoyable to drive. I also 2 12v trucks. 1 is 1st gen ve pump and 1 2nd gen p pump. The p pump 5 speed 2nd gen is what I enjoy most.
I believe the difference everyone claims to feel with the I6 is from the I6 having a larger stroke than bore, which the Powerstroke does not have, thus needing to rev it up more to get the same torque, I have owned 2 24v trucks and now have a 12 valve P pump truck. I prefer the 12 valve P pump truck hands down.
I don't know to much about diesel, but I work on gas cars, many performance american muscle/sports. It's the complete opposite for gas, i6 and i4 are all high rev horsepower, v8s and bigger are all torque in the low end with good high end horsepower.
My dad bought his 1997 F-350 XLT Crew Cab long bed brand new off the lot when I was just a year old. I have so many great memories of the whole family fitting in for a camping trip or my dad's hunting buddies piling in. The truck is promised to be mine someday and I cannot wait!
I'm glad mine isn't clean like that because mine is putting in work, but I'm also glad just because I use it to put in work it's not rusted out falling apart and cleans up well
Very good test. I would agree with most of it. I have a 94 2nd gen Dodge with 462,000 miles and I still love driving it as much as I did the day I bought it.
Hi Eric, I feel the same way about my 02 dodge lb I ordered new. After 21 years and 382k, it still thrills me to fire her up, and drive. Still my daily driver, 23mpg.
If I would build my own truck I’d build a F350 a 12 valve. Obs of course but any body style. It’s just expensive. Both trucks are awesome. But I think the dodge side of reliability is the worry point. But idk I’ve never owned a dodge. They look good though!
I couldn’t decide...so I got a 97 Crew Cab F250 AND a First Gen 12V. Both are amazing trucks and have been amazingly reliable for me. Did 4” custom Deaver leafs on the Dodge to get it to ride better and fit 35’s. Did a reverse shackle kit with super duty springs and a dana 60 axle swap on the OBS to get it riding better. Other than that they are basically stock. I love 90’s diesels!
@@tig-nasty2829 what are you talking about? Building power on a vp is more expensive than let’s say other Cummins trucks, but it is infinitely cheaper than a 7.3. It’s no more expensive than doing any duramax or later model Ford. Not sure where you got that idea from unless you’re a 12 valve guy...

This is the first video of yours I’ve watched, awesome film quality keep it up!I’ve owned both these trucks and agree with just about every point made, video will definitely help someone out whose looking to get into one of these rigs
To me I think Ford built a better overall truck the only thing dodge really had going for it was the cummins which bone stock is toe to toe with the 7.3 and the Ford trucks of that era were built better no tranny issues or constant ball joint failures the cummins is great but Ford built the overall better truck (mainly comparing aero nose ford and second gen dodge)
I have to say you have given a very fair representation of the gen 2 Cummins powered trucks. I have a 2000 2500 HD 6speed that I bought in 2002. It has about 205k on it now and is a daily driver. The dash went to hell and I put a dash topper on it. Hard to tell it even there. Rebuilt the front end when it got too loose to pull a trailer safely. All new tie rods ends, track bar and ball joints. Also added the stearing box bar with the bearing and it helped a ton. Transmission and transfer case have both been rebuilt and brought up to 2003 specs. 400hp clutch and HD pressure plate. Rails were recently ran and new 2003 spec 275hp injectors with new injector tubes installed. After the 2nd injector pump failure, an AirDog Raptor was installed on the frame rail. She runs like a raped ape! Currently saving up for a nice paint job and new Mickey Thompson III wheels, lol 😎✌️
In my opinion I’ve owned 3 obs trucks all with 7.3’s and manual transmissions 2 second gens one auto and one manual and 2 first gens one auto one manual. All the trucks where super reliable with very minimal issues. Had more front end problems with one of my second gen than any of the other obs trucks but seemed to see more oil leaks coming from the 7.3’s nothing major but they just always seemed a little bit wet down in the valley as where the only leak I ever had on my second gens was one had a front timing cover gasket leak and sometimes would see fuel leaks coming from injector nuts. Super easy fixes. In a perfect world I would want to have an obs with a 12v or 24v in it just for the power capability aspect but honestly you can’t go wrong with either of these options
Your comparison is spot on. I own a 97 obs f350 cc and I have had 1st and 2nd gens as work trucks. I still prefer the obs because the only thing the dodges had going for them was the cummins. Yes ride might be better but not by much and who doesn't love a straight six for its reliability and low end torque. I just can't get past the interior and the body line of the 2nd gens. Fan boys aside both of these trucks are fun to own and to drive.
I did these two since it seems to be the most common comparison for people starting to look at older diesels. The 99+ Super Duty trucks don’t quite have the same cool factor as the OBS Fords do.
I like the first gen super duty lol, but it doesn't look as good as obs. Comparing stats however I'm not quite sure this video was fair. Good overall video though
I agree. But the Cummins would’ve still won those certain topics and the Powerstroke would’ve won the other. The 99-early 2000s Ford F-250s were my favorite looking trucks, and interior. Still, the Cummins is such a beast engine. I’m not a big fan of the 7.3’s.
I love my TTB front end in my bronco. They are definitely more expensive to lift but Ford ran that front end for awhile and there is a lot of aftermarket support out there. I've never had a problem with my front end.
Love Both of them ! Never owned a Ford diesel but it's a great looking truck . I've had 5 Rams . Three 5.9s and two 6.7s. The 6.7 is awesome but the DEF system sucks ! But more to the point I have a '93 model 5.9 with close to 600,000 miles on her and still purrs like a tiger. It does have other issues that need repairs but over all , it's been a phenomenal truck !
I own a CCLB 95 SRW F-350, automatic. I can vouch for the fact that they are difficult to work on, at least in the aspect that certain spots are hard to reach. I will say when I got my truck it was abused. The fuel bowl and lack of maintenance was awful. Every chance I get I fix what starts to be a problem. It’s definitely a commitment to maintain such an old truck, but I think that’s what it’s really all about. If you love it, keep it moving. Also, a stock 7.3 is a slug, but with the right tuner and some simple mods it will gain you the comfortable power you need and even contribute to your automatic transmission shifting smoother.
I own a 1997 F-350 Crew Cab F-350 4x4 with the long bed and its a 7.3L with the 5 Spd ZF-5 Transmission. Previous owner installed a bigger Garrett Turbo, larger injectors, Cold air kit, and 5 inch exhaust. Thing pulls hills like no ones business here in Maine. All set up for towing and has front and rear off-road bumpers with running boards. He added the seats from a 2000's truck for added comfort.
Oh yeah! Honestly old interiors are just awesome. Cool looking and comfy. The blue plaid cloth/leather seats in my 79 Plymouth are a million times more comfy than new seats.
We have a 97 2500 4x4 Extended Cab Dodge Ram w/ the Cummins Engine and while the dash is trashed, the truck still is a gorgeous truck, I get compliments all the time on it! We are over 200,000 miles and still going strong
That’s incredibly low miles! Like whoa! It’s always a neat experience just seeing such a barn find vehicle. It’s like stepping into a time machine. Hope it goes well for ya’
ive been a ford guy my whole life. had a 7.3 powerstroke and now have a 6.7 but i decided to build a 68 mercury m100 with a 98 12 valve p pump in it (due to the fact the motors a 1 wire motor) and i am extremely impressed with the cummins.
I have leather on both of mine and I honestly prefer the cloth, plus I like the look of it also. I’d prefer the multicolored cloth over the fords interior
At the beginning of the year I had an opportunity to acquire a family owned 1996 f350 7.3 4 door dually. It wa sa farm truck, and was used like one. I've already begun the restoration. I found this video quite knowledgeable for general Info. Great video and it's niceto see someone not be biased and give information equally. Thank you!
Great content. 👍🏻 The diesel that peaked my interest was a 1990’s Ram 250 4x4 that a good friend of mine had. What an awesome truck! I couldn’t find a truck like that and ended up purchasing a 96 F350 4x4. My most favorite truck to date. I had the trans rebuilt and put a complete Banks kit in it, Fantastic! Drove it like that for years averaging 24/25 mpg on 35’s with 4.10’s. The most fun truck and sneaky fast was a 97 F350 4x4 with a Banks intercooler, Beans Diesel D66 turbo, Adrenaline HPOP, Baby Swamps injectors, TS 5 position chip, MBRP exhaust and was also on 35’s with 4.10’s on a built transmission. This thing was an absolute rocket ship. Love the 7.3 and I miss them.
My friend's got $7K worth of Banks on his 2001 F-350 an it has never gotten good fuel economy. In addition my 98.5 Ram with an Edge EZ and 30 hp Bosch would smoke it on the highway. All being said I love the OBS F-350's OJ styling.
I really like the Cummins diesel, they are amazing. But I’ve always heard it said, there is no replacement for displacement. Yes the Cummins will give you more low end, on the horsepower curve, the PSD will walk away from the Cummins. Love both trucks, so hard to pick a winner!
Honestly I feel the opposite! My OBS just feels like it struggles to pull the same trailer that my first gen and this 2nd gen yank around no problem. Put 10k behind them both on a hill and the 7.3 just feels out of breath!
You obviously have never sat foot inside a 7.3. They are complete dogs. Cummins will walk a 7.3 every day of the week. Almost angers me how wrong you are lol.
@@JustDiesels I can’t speak for the OBS powerstroke, but my dads 01 powerstroke pulls really hard! It is tuned, and pulls circles around my friends tuned 24 or the same era. But that is just my opinion, and I could certainly be wrong.

A 99 Cummins and a 99 power stroke is what it should have been the obs did not have a intercooler but the super duty did it is unfair to do it this way a 99 Cummins came out with 210 hp automatic and 235 manual the 7.3 power stroke in 99 came out with 235 hp that would have been a better comparison
My only regret is that my first vehicle purchase wasn't my 02 f250 7.3 4x4 crew cab short bed diesel. I had a straight 6 Jeep Cherokee Classic as my 1st vehicle, but the life changing opportunities that exist with a pickup truck were unknown to me for so many years! I love it! I put a small trash bag in the back and take it to the landfill just because! Lol. I change the oil every 2k now. Change the gear oils every 10k. It's not the best riding vehicle, but you miss it when you are not driving it! I still want to Cummins swap my Yukon XL, just need a reason to do so. My motor is perfect so I cannot validate the effort. Cheers m8s!
Funny cause while a 6.0 is rolling on all that coolant, the cummapart is in the shop on its 7th tranny and the Isuzu snapped it’s tie rod ends before it even left the showroom. LOL
@@rexmilanista I would much rather deal with possibly having to put a transmission in it than spend $4K bulletproofing just for it to be reliable, and even then it’s a coin toss on whether or not it’ll be a good one. When the transmission went out in mine it was $1500 to rebuild. I’ll take that over bullshit Powerstroke and Duramax problems all day long.
I don't have personal experience as I live in the UK, but from the video the 7.3 sounds like a very angry beast, it's a very different sound. Subscribed.

@@tig-nasty2829 I only have experience with an OBS 7.3 upgraded injectors, custom tuned ect. Its nothing fast or powerful by today’s common rail diesels. Its been my understanding those 24V Cummins are slightly more robust and even with mods are a no frills ‘industrial’ experience to drive. But better for heavy towing as low end torque inherently favoring a straight 6 configuration. It’s the first I’ve heard someone’s experience find the 7.3 be the better a tow pig.
