Several years ago I undertook a documentry about the opening up and cleaning the Rivers Calder & Brun around Burnley and Pendleside up here in Lancashire.
I've re-edited it and shortened it but I hope it gives you a flavour of the Ribble Rivers Trust massive undertaking.
The project was completed in 2015 and whilst it was a great success certain factors have now evolved since then which is beyond the controi of the Ribble RiversTrust, such as the volume of water in the rivers and the flooding of the river system which on more than one occasion has washed out all the potential spawning areas along the rivers and streams.
Another problem which has steadily worstened over several years is the decline of the Atlantic Salmon with far fewer fish returning to our rivers for spawning.
This has been a big dissappointment to me because after exploring many suitable spawning habitats for the past 8 years on many of our local rivers and streams, I've yet to see my first Salmon or Salmon Spawning in the area that I've lived in all my life.

Thank you for your kind comment, I’m hopeful that salmon will eventually spawn before time will runout for me because of my age, I’m now 83.

@@filmakercrossley there are many candidate sites for Salmon spawning in the Brun, but a lack of gravel beds, and the collapsed weir outside Altham's offices on Netherwood rd needs breaking up to make passage easier, the river is far too straight coming up from bank hall and there's a lack of deeper pools, meanders and cover throughout.

I spent all my younger days around the Rivers Brun and Don. The lower reaches of the Don are wooded again it has changed and I'm not convinced that the Fish Pass at the Prestige Weir at the side of the old Burnley College is doing its job but the River Don right up into Thursden Valley is still good with several stretches of gravel I've had a look and followed the river right up the waterfall below Boulsworth End Farm were the road starts to climb out of Thursden Valley to Hebden Bridge. Obviously I can't cover all the stretches of this river, as yet I've haven't seen anything to convince me that Salmon have entered these stretches of our upper streams.

Unfortunately wild Salmon are in rapid decline throughout the world. Down by three quarters in 25 years. Just google "salmon decline" if you dare😱. Doubtless other fish and aquatic plants & creatures will benefit from the Ribble Trust's sterling work as well as the local population. General, global rewilding and stopping fishing are probably part of the solution. Great video as always, thank you 😊

How do I get involved please? I've been into rivers, aquatics and angling for 45 years and I live in Burnley

Perhaps you could contact the Ribble Rivers Trust Head Office in Clitheroe.

The rivers could be better where I live. Especially one called the River Irvine which goes into the sea 🌊 on the Clyde Coast. Always trolleys 🛒 in it when you look out from the Rivergate Shopping Centre which goes over it.
