Observatory Crest / Captain Beefheart 

My wife and I danced with this song for our introduction dance to the wedding party. No waltz, no beautiful blue Danube, just the Captain, the flying saucers and Observatory Crest :D

i loved the fact that captain asked the trees if it was alright to gig in the forest before he set up his equipment ..i guess they must have agreed in their own special way ..thats captain for you ..total Dude >:-)

so what if it is 'commercial' ... it is possibly one of his finest most moving atmospheric songs in my opinion .. everyone has an observatory crest

Entrancing music and lyrics. The repetitions of words, like taking a breath of fresh air at a steady slow phase. It put me to rest, when my body was tense. The simplicity met complexity at Observatory. It put me to rest. Like a bird high up in the sky below me was a Crest. Where an Observatory put me to rest.

I've always loved all Don's music...including 'Bluejeans..." and 'Unconditionaly...." I've never understood why those 2 records are so disliked my many...I think they are great....IMO.

It has taken me until now to bring myself to watching the Captain again since he departed. I was born the same year and lived his music at the time. 'Magic' Band - an understatement.

Definitely the best track on the best album. You can feel the love. The Captain used to go to Observatory Crest in his youth, and I have loved this track since first release back in the day, and now I have his music with me at all times.

my ex wife hated this, but this musical genius way ahead of it's time. A well known hated album, but damn is it good. All the best music is hated until after it's time. funny how all the best are appreciated after their dead.

There is something captivating about the captain, something so magical that has you in it's spell... He's like Tom Waits, more than a musician. More than the lyrics and the songs, a presence and gravitas that has you in it's spell. You're not a fan of the Captains, you become a part of him...

I've always loved this song, and many other Beefheart songs. With my new speakers the atmospheric quality of the production is really coming through even more. So, I'm thinking he was trying to write a Dreampop song. I'm not sure to what lever it was actually a genre at that time. I hadn't heard of it.

This is footage of an earlier version of the Magic Band. I think it was on the beach in Cannes, France. He is not singing Observatory Crest. It was my favorite song on that record, though (Blue jeans and moon beams).

Funny that Don said that Bluejeans & Moonbeams should be erased of his discography, he was embarrased at how normal and "safe as milk" it is. To me this is just a great song made with great production values.

The Tragic Band was actually pretty good. It's a shame that snobby, pretentious CB fans can't accept that there were many sides to the Captain.
