Subscribed. I designed some of the milestones (I'm one of the backers who has been helping Dan since he got us involved in the first campaign) and I was happy to hear you enjoyed them. :) This is the second of your videos I watched (the first was Rococo), and I appreciate your take on these games. I particularly like that you clearly played the games you're reviewing enough to get a true understanding of the games and to dig into the expansions. This is not a game that I think truly shines on first play for a mechanical player, but the more I've played, the more I've loved the intricate mechanics. U/D expansion, I agree, is absolutely essential once you've mastered the rules. I highly recommend the nanty narking coins - they are absolute perfection for this game.

We do this just for fun and so we don't have as much pressure to put out a lot of reviews so we try to play games as much as we can with different player counts to be able to speak to the nuance of the game. As you mention, sometimes it takes a few plays to get into a game and other times it peaks early and then gets boring! The board game review market is quickly getting oversaturated. I already have four weekly podcasts, and a tonne of RU-vid reviews to watch. And yet, you both found a wonderful niche and concept. Great review. I really enjoy the thinker and themer perspectives. I love games where the designer can bring a theme all the way into a well designed mechanically solid game. Had a "moment of weakness" over the holiday weekend as Kayenta Games has their website shop open for shipping to the USA. I went all in with the KS Edition, both expansions, and the promotional tile pack... oh my...Thanks for putting this game on my radar! I am looking forward to getting it to the table in 2021. I love everything about this game so much, and Dan is such a wonderful and thoughtful creator. I really loved this video and your style of reviews! Having heard you talked so often about this game, and now seeing some new members being introduced to your channel through this game, it finally triggered me to watch this video. The cover has never pulled me in before (although I was aware of it's existence) but seeing it on your table I must say I am not put off at all. And Amy, I know that feeling about costume drama's. Not my cup of tea either, but binged Bridgerton ;-) Think that role playing is truly beneficial when playing this game. Need more convincing (as to add it to my collection), but like to play it for sure.

I very much enjoyed your review, especially with your focus on both the mechanics and the theme. I'm a sucker for a game where the two are well integrated, so you have me putting this game on my radar for sure. It does make me wonder if there is a way to play a solo game, because this theme would NOT interest most of my family members. Thanks again for a great review!

This was the first Video i saw on this Channel. Maybe in October or November '20, i order the Game in March '21... Today it was comming. Yes, but the shipping to Germany is prohibitive, sadly, and then there's taxes on top and the fact you'd have to actually physically pick it up at the tax-office. >_

@@ThinkerThemer Amy I can’t believe I forgot to reply to you, I only watched Maggie’s Stardew vid the other day and it reminded me to check here. Maggie sold me on Stardew solo btw! But I discovered a thread about some component issues so postponed it for now and bought Ark Nova instead (so love it too) 🙂. Yes, I did end up getting the whole Obsession series. So far I’ve gone through the main game and through Wessex into the Extended Play where I’ve sat quite a bit. Love the bots. Hope you guys are coping with our Melburnian winter-so looking forward to life getting back to normal asap but things will just be weird Down Under for maybe another 12 months yet. Take care.

The only mechanical element that dictates gender is the Admirer Bonus on each Young Lady's card (the daughter of each family): the Admirer Bonus grants a two reputation bonus for when the Young Lady is seen at a social activity being paid conspicuous attention by a male guest of significant prestige.

As per Dan's comment the pairing element is very much secondary to the estate building... your own character is not assigned a gender and technically you do get to choose Ms or Mr Fairchild as your prize (;)). 💜

Played my first solo last night and enjoyed it! I'm curious now that I've read through all the materials and played once, what are both your thoughts on all the variants? There are a ton! I think I like the idea of the "expert" variant where some of the gentry cards are face up in a kind of market.

Preorders have been opened (8/1/2022)! WOO HOO! I pre-ordered several of the expansions but not the Wessex expansion, as it seemed geared to adding players and I'm not expecting more than 3. Was I wrong? Is the Wessex expansion essential? This video indicated the Upstairs Downstairs one is (and anyone who has watched Downton Abbey would probably agree the servants MAKE the house) but wanted to check in on the Wessex one. Edited to Add: Received the game (thanks, Dan!) and I love it. As noted by Maggie, it's super intuitive if it's a theme you enjoy. I did end up ordering the Wessex expansion for a really silly reason... The base Obsession box (E2.2) comes with family boxes for each family's startup materials, including the Wessex and Howard families which are included in the expansions. I do not like empty boxes, Sam-I-Am. So, even though it'll be of little purpose unless I find a bunch more people who are Anglophiles like me (I've got three so far, but we are scattered across the country), it will satisfy my need to have full boxes. Teaching it to my sister this weekend and so looking forward to her reaction.

my big question is, does the expansions fit in the main box?

Julia, yes, I believe it's designed to. There are interior boxes for the expansion families and all the new tiles, etc, can be put in with the base tiles when you decide to integrate them. I'm in the middle of integrating them myself (filled the family boxes, but am waiting to get a few games under my belt with the base game before adding Upstairs Downstairs) but see no reason it won't fit. It will require some careful packing, but I believe it's designed to contain all.

I got this game because of its unique theme and I actively dislike downtown abbey and pride and prejudice, etc. but it is so fun to get into character and pretend to be in charge of a prestigious family and throw parties
