Mate, I know next to nothing about coding, and am a writer trying to see whether Obsidian is right for my notes/creative process, but I have to say that you make, hands-down, the best tutorials I've seen on the web, paid or unpaid, for... pretty much anything. This could be so utterly confusing for a luddite like me, but you've somehow managed to elucidate it step-by-step without being patronising or superfluous. Brava.
Nicole - first your love of TTRPGs is amazing but your ability to communicate is astounding. Thanks for all your videos on obsidian I reference them often.
Thank you so much, Don! I really appreciate that. I always THINK it sounds ok in my head, but sometimes it doesn't work out, you know? Glad you liked this one and I'm very humbled to know you reference my videos.
Nicole - I am a public lecturer/teacher and I can assure you - YOU ARE AN EXCELLENT communicator. I watch some videos for the visual help…some for the communicator…but rarely do I watch videos for both You are the exception.
Came back for a refresher, and I honestly appreciate your style so much. Everything is so clear, and concise, and easy to find. There are a ton of Obsidian tutorial that don't accomplish what they advertise. I need good tips and explanations for notetaking, not some deep philosophical tangent essay on productivity, and the human condition. Not everything needs profound to be useful and praiseworthy.
😱 I've been using Obsidian for almost a year and I didn't even know you can do header and section-specific wiki links. I literally learned the difference between quotes and callouts just now 😂 Your videos are EXTREMELY helpful!! 🙏🔥✨
Happy to hear that!! That I could help you, that is. :) I think there are a lot of things about Obsidian that are not obvious, so I'm glad to be able to highlight some of these things!
You actually can change font color using the Colored Text community plug in. I absolutely LOVE this plug in. It works by highlighting selected text. You first have to set up a color palette that shows up in the bottom left hand part of the screen
Thank you for the very clear overview. I'll be adding all of these to my own note taking process. I like the equal signs using to highlight. Very cool features all around.
Hey, thank you! I'm glad you found it useful. I've gotten some questions on Markdown-related things, so I thought I'd make a video to refer people to. :) Thanks for watching!
I'm just starting to use Obsidian and I have almost zero knowledge of coding and minimum knowledge of Markdown, I'm not sure if I'm making any sense, but you know, I'm kind of a person who needs this type of video. I appreciate your help, thank you. It's difficult but I'm enjoying this,.
@@nicolevdh Just wanted to say that the toughest thing about getting started with Obsidian is that everyone immediately starts talking about more advanced workflows and skips the basics. This video taught me SO MANY basics that I didn't even know I was missing!
Thank you so much. I also learned a lot more during your video than I have learned in 6 months of implementing obsidian. Keep doing what you are doing! Blessings to you!
I like your videos, I'm bored when I hear from some youtubers that Obsidian is for developper, I'm myself a developper and I'm not using Obsidian for that (even if I made some python plugins around it to replace some laggy/buggy Obsidian plugins) but I mostly use it because I feel it helps me with ADHD, and to also help making connections to improve my memory on the subjects that matters to me.
OMG! Love you, Themes brought color into my monocromatic Obsidiannotes:) Like watching your favorite cartoon in color for the first time :)) Thank you!
Thank you for making tutorials that made my ADHD brain not only understand the topics discussed but also kept it from drifting its focus off to other distracting things in my room. Well done and I would love to watch what you put out in the future!
Excellent video. I especially appreciated your positivity with the "you don't have to be a professional to sing" comment, (and you don't have to be coder to use Obsidian). Loved the video!
I'm just at the very start of using Obsidian but your sources have been a great help so far, especially the callout of this episode is something I'm gonna use a lot!
I have been trying to use Obsidian for so long but it didnt work out until I found your vdo. I cant wait to dive in the power of Obsidian. Thank you Nicole.
Qapla'! Thanks for the video, I learned a lot of things which I have wondered how to do for a long time! Your videos have definitely helped show me what is possible in Obsidian beyond "just notepad". Keep it coming with the fantastic content!
I am new to Obsidian, but this will definitely change the way I use it for my bible studies, so thank you so much, Nicole. It really is appreciated. God bless you and Happy New Year!

PLUGINS: I know I said no plugins, but apparently I accidentally showed one that I forgot was a plugin! It's Query Control, and it's what I use to get extra controls when embedding a search query.
I release all my videos to my Patreons before I release them to everyone else. :) Also, people always ask about themes and such, so I make sure to note down what I was using right after I upload something!
Hi great Video. Tanks a lot. Regarding footnotes I also like to just put in a space and then write ^[This is the content of the footnote] this way I don’t have to copy something to the end of the document. Obsidian just makes all the work for me.
You've been the go to person for anything Obsidian related. I'll vote for you in the next Obsidian presidential election for sure. Keep up the good work! May the light illuminate you!
I have been playing around with Obsidian this morning to learn more about how to use it, so this video is perfect timing! Thanks! I have a little programming background, but am still a beginner, so this video is great! I found your channel from your learning Swedish video, because I've started using obsidian to help me learn German. I initially tried using Notion since every youtuber seems to use it, but I found Notion to be so frustrating! I really like Obsidian, but I do think a better way to use tables/spreadsheets in Obsidian would be clutch. I do have the advanced tables plugin, at least, but creating tables in markdown is just kind of a pain. Do you use tables in obsidian? Also, I noticed that search results don't include when the search terms show up in headings or note titles, which is very frustrating, but I could just not know what I'm doing.
Hey Kristine! Welcome! :) Glad to hear from another person who went from Notion to Obsidian. I think you might like the Database Folder plugin, though it really isn't as good as Notion still. But development is happening, and quickly. I hadn't noticed the issue with headings, but certainly with filenames! Since you mentioned you have a programming background, perhaps you have an IDE like VSCode installed? You can open your vault in your IDE and do searches from there... not as convenient, I know, but it does search headings.
@@nicolevdh I will look into those plugins and options, thanks! It's very encouraging to see how quickly the Obsidian devs jump on making updates, and the potential is so great considering how new it is. Thanks for your high quality videos and your contribution to the community!
Ok I think I figured out my problem with the search! The "Match Case" (Aa) option was selected, so it wouldn't pull up any results if it wasn't exactly matching my search term. When I untoggle that option, the titles do come up in the results! I'm not sure I will ever want to have my searches be case-sensitive, but good to know it's available.
Oh! Good to hear! I was just about to write you because I tried it again and didn't have any issues with either. I'll remember that next time someone says that to me. Happy you figured it out! :)
Wow....just wow. I'm taking a MASSIVE amount of cybersecurity notes with tons of code. Really didn't feel like digging into CSS or HTML just to change my font colors, etc...though I could. I just needed it to be easy since I've never used Obsidian. You kick ass for making this video! I learned so much. Thank you!
the footnote feature saved me! I had to use dataview for that HAHAHA which made it more complicated to make sure that the note title is in every outgoing links I needed compiled (hence, i had to keep jumping from my main note and making sure that my dataview has every path i need there.)😢
Thank you for the clear explanations Nicole. After switching back form Logseq to Obsidian, this was a great fresh up with some nice new features I didn't know about.
Fabulous intro video. The best I've found for my level -- rank beginner. I'm not opposed to coding, but I just needed to know the very basics of markdown and Obsidian. Thanks!
Very nice video. I can agree that Obsidian is not only for coders however it is also not for mainstream users. At least it is for “geeks”. I do not means that as a negative word. After all, I am a SAP developer and to me, using Obsidian to its full extend seems like learning a new language.
Didnt know footnites exist in obsidian! They look like a good way to link notes without cluttering the main space too much, especially on subatomic notes
Great video, straight to the point. Thanks for sharing. I used the Canvas feature in real time to create a map of all of this so I can refer back to it later. What an incredible program.
Thank you, this was great for someone just getting started with Obsidian like me! I'd love to learn more about YAML or what you think are the best practices for using tags in notes.
Thank you for the suggestion! Those are always useful. I've made a note of that. And I'm happy I helped you get started! :) Welcome to the Obsidian community!
Thanks! Definitely a non-coder here. This was helpful. Question: for the footnote, does it automatically convert it to numbers? I noticed you typed in vulcan, and I was expecting the superscript to be vulcan instead of a number
I have, but it's not for me. It's an outliner only, whereas Obsidian lets me outline AND write in paragraph form, which really encourages me to write more in that format. There are also too many Obsidian plugins that I'd miss if I went to Logseq.
Yep, I'm not a fan of Tana either, although it's a better Roam Research. It's also cloud-only, which isn't great for me. Supertags were interesting, but nothing that I haven't already solved using templates.
I like to do it when I'm in the middle of doing research for something (for a video, or presentation, or blog post). It's handy to have multiple searches in the same note where I'm trying to piece things together!
Thanks for all the help. I gave up scrolling through all the comments. If someone else has asked this question, please forgive me. I have trouble with the implementation of adding a footnote to a page. How do I find the bottom of the page? It seems to scroll endlessly.
incredibly helpful and clear - thank you Nicole! I wish I had found this video before watching so many others searching for these answers - just a suggestion but maybe adding something like "tips and foundational shortcuts to using Obsidian" could help beginners like me find you more easily? also question - when I do the Embedded Search /query in markdown - it shows up but doesn't have the sort features? wondering if there's something I don't have turned on for that? thanks again!
Hey again Rachael, I did think about talking about shortcuts, but they're so OS-specific and can be seen in Options > Hotkeys, so I thought maybe it wasn't worth me doing... but maybe I'm wrong! Oh! You may need the Query Control plugin. Sorry, I forgot I had that enabled.
Thank you very much, just a suggestion: can you pls use a light theme while demonstrating so we can easily see different symbols even on low resolution?
Hi! I do generally try to use light themes. Funnily enough though, I also get comments on those videos from people saying that the light themes are glaringly bright... so now I try to use a bit of both!
Nicole, thank you for your excellent videos on Obsidian! I was wondering if you could do a video on notettakiing for university students. I'm a math major looking to use Obsidian for my studies and was hoping you could make a video on how you would approach notetaking for a university student, particularly one in a technical field. Thank you so much for all the work you do!
Hi! Glad you're liking them! Thanks for the suggestion-- I'm not a university student so I can't really talk about that well, but I think a lot of general learning advice should apply, and I can definitely add that to the list. In the meantime, here's a video about how I learn technical subjects, in case it's useful! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6kzsCBKCl94.html
This is amazing. Can anyone help me out? I was able to embed a query, but it's not finding any matches for the tag. Does the tag need to be in any specific place (like the metadata) for it to be searchable?
Thank you very much, this video helps a lot by laerning markdown! One thing didn't worked. When I want to embed a search, I don't have this option bar for sorting and this stuff. It's just embeds the result from the search. Has someone an idea why and how to make that this ist shown?
Thanks for the video. I watched the video about the new v.1 features. Do you know how to make the call-out look the same way before like title and body have different background colors and a larger line space without using CSS?
The only way to change how things look is by using CSS. But you can either use CSS OR change themes, which also work based on CSS. So maybe you could try looking around for other themes, if you would prefer not to modify the CSS.
At this point, your channel should be called Nicole van der Obsidian. Sorry to butcher your name ;) I really love your videos! You and Nick are single-handedly changing my life! Thank you so much!
Hey, Nicole. I really like your vids coz yours is probably easiest to understand. Can I make a request for you to feature tag pills/tag colors? I've found bits around the internet about the css snippets, copy pasted them but it doesn't work. Tag pills/Tag colors are really useful. I use tags to quickly check if that note is #unfinished or #ready_to_post so I know if I forgot something. However, I want the tags to be in separate colors. Do you know how to make it work?
Also, I'm not sure if obsidian devs removed the capability of the tag pills but right now, nothing seems to be working because most of the thing I saw is pre-version 1.0.3
Hi Nicole, thanks for that great video. What are the icons for on the left side of your screen (how do you anchor them there?) and also the "traffic lights" above them?
Hi Thakius! The icons on the left are part of Obsidian - they come with Obsidian and I didn't do anything to put them there. :) The "traffic lights" are the controls to close, minimise, and maximise the app because I use a Mac. :)
Thanks for your answer, Nichole. :) I appreciate it. I downloaded Obsidian but I just have quick switcher, open graph view, daily note, insert template and open command palette as icons in this side bar.
