In this video, I look at the mechanics and influences of the "Obsolete" bassline; the story behind the studio recording and creation process; and translating this upright bass part to the bass guitar.

When you busted this out on tour years ago I was blown away. The bass line still gets me every time and now I know so much more about it. The upright makes it sounds perfect.

2012 and 2013 I went through this kick of riding my bike during late nights around the city and neighborhoods. I would always play this album...and this song would come on and always seem to rhyme with the nightscape! Good times!

I remember being completely mesmerized by this bass line when I first heard it in the summer of '06, and trying to play it on my Jazz bass. It was my warmup/sound test line for a long time. Now I can perfect it thanks to this tutorial, thanks Roy.

The thing I love about that first album is the way all the songs flow together. The transition from Stare at the Sun into Obsolete will always be iconic. Love this bass line. The bat story is so cool!

I’m glad I found this. Always loved this bass line. The sound of it. I was a huge MuteMath fan, and remember meeting you all in 2008 in Oklahoma City when you opened for Matchbox 20. You guys were so nice. I became a bassist in 2019, for my church. I still only play really just one note per chords in songs. I would love to learn this bass line and also be able to play better. I know I’ll never play as good as you, though. Much love.

These videos are total gold. The self titled mutemath record was the first record I bought with my own money as a kid when I was 12, music is my full time thing now. Kind of my “Beatles on Ed Sullivan” moment if that makes any sense. I’m Not even a bassist but still watch all of these videos just learn about how you approach the instrument and hear the cool stories behind the songs and bass lines. Thanks for taking the time to make these Roy!

I've always preferred that sound of the amplified upright. Such a unique, gritty tone. You can't really get that with a bass guitar.
4 года назад
Couldn't agree more! There is something about the feel of this line on the upright that doesn't quite translate on electric.
@JesusChrist5000

the upright has a 41 inch string length, whereas the bass guitar only has a 34 inch length. Makes a difference.

@@JesusChrist5000 Probably a combo of scale length, resonance of the body, and using tapewound strings.
@JesusChrist5000
@JesusChrist5000 4 года назад
@@phillipemery572 This is just my opinion, but i have an electric upright, an NXT solid body 41 inch string length, and it sounds better than my conventional acoustic upright bass. My musician friends think so too. Now admittedly, the said acoustic bass is an inexpensive Englehardt.
@phillipemery572
@phillipemery572 4 года назад
@@JesusChrist5000 It's not so much a case of which instrument is better, but more which works best for a particular sound. In the case of "Obsolete" and the production that Paul, Darren, Greg, and Roy put together, the upright has a sound we all gravitate towards. I have $100 guitars that can do things my $1000 guitars can't, and vice versa. My job as an engineer and a musician is to know which is the right sound for the part.

I’m not a musician but I find this fascinating. Thank you for uploading it! You did a lot of great stuff with Mutemath but Obsolete is the one that’s always stuck out to me. Some people’s favorite live prop was the Atari, but mine was always the upright bass. 😍

Thanks, Roy! My very first impression of the band was live video with you playing this bass line on upright. And it was so magical and catchy that on the next day I was the biggest Mutemath fan in all the city! One of the greatest bass lines in modern music for me.

The upright gets my vote. It has so much body to it; so sombre. I've been a fan since the first album (via a Line Rider video here on YT!) and went to the show at The Exchange in Bristol (UK) in 2016. I can't begin to explain what it meant to me to finally see you guys play live. Obsolete is one of the songs burned in my consciousness; that wonderful swaying pendulum bass motif with the tinkling piano. It often plays in my head during quiet times. Stay safe Roy, I look forward to your future grooves 👍

Thank you! I remember that day and gig in Bristol vividly. I had never been to the city before and got to explore tons that day (by the way, the house engineer for that place was one of the funniest & most useless cracks I've encountered; he passed out on the console during soundcheck, lol). Anyway, good memories. As I explored the city, I remember feeling romantic about being in the city where Portishead, Massive Attack, and Roni Size had developed their crafts. Cheers!

Thank you so much for this lesson, nothing could be better!! Definitely love the upright bass sound, got this warmth surrounding bass sound, although the fretless and the P bass got this special bright, metallic and groove sound that gives more energy. Thank you again!

Great to hear! Thanks for your comment and for watching. There is something special about this line played on the upright. I think a lot of it has to do with feel, which is why it is so hard to translate on the electric bass.

This song and bass line were extremely influential for me as a young bassist. I saw you guys come through Houston three times when I was in high school, and I remember talking to you about this song twice. I was the kid that always asked you some weird music theory question after shows in Houston - even if this particular tune was utilizing a Dorian scale! I'm never going to forget your response: "Uhh... *thinks for a second* Yeah, man it is. You got that raised 6 in there." I was so thrilled that I had figured that out, man. I saw you play this song on both fretless and upright. I personally always loved the way it not only sounded on upright, but also the way it looked while playing. Seeing you play on upright made me start to think so much more about visual aesthetic of music, and when I started studying composition, the Reset EP and Mutemath debut album were some of my biggest influences in my music. I am curious, how you're getting the tone of your upright in this video. It sound slightly overdriven. Is that because of the magnetic pickup, or is it being processed along the way? Thanks for what you're doing, man!
4 года назад
Thank you so much for that story. For all these basses in the video, I have the clean DI mixed with an amp sound. But the upright breaks up a bit more intensely and is generally dirtier than the others.

Question for you Roy... what gauge flatwounds do you have on your fretted p-bass? I’m making the switch to flats after using roundwounds for years. Thank you for these videos! Looking forward to more.

I use the Ernie Ball flatwounds. I've also used Rotosound flats (45-105 gauges) in the past and they're nice, too.

Thanks so much for sharing Roy! I love the sound of the upright in this one. On a side note, what’s the backstory to the iconic Silvertone 1454 guitar that’s been so integral to mutemath’s sound?
4 года назад
Thanks for watching! The Silvertone 1454 is a cornerstone piece of not only the MM guitar sound, but the MM sound in general. That guitar has been around since before I joined the band in 2005. I believe it was Ted T's (the debut album producer) and we ended up buying it from him.
