I've been using the 5D for about 2 years, exclusively in manual mode thanks to a tripod incident I had after a couple shots of Fireball that broke the auto modes. Every so often I think about getting a newer camera with fancier features, but then I go through my shots in Lightroom and am reminded why I love this camera so much.
Having been a MFT user since I became a hobby photographer I must say that I've been missing the full frame aesthetic that I got when I briefly owned a 6D a few years ago. A 5Dc has come up for sale cheap here in London hence why I watched this vid, and this review didn't disappoint! You did an outstanding job putting this review together, very engaging.
I recently bought a 5d classic for $180. I slapped an old canon 28-105mm (Mark 1) and went walking through the city of Philadelphia. I was blown away by the images this thing produces. The colors are amazing.
I still remember how big of a deal shooting with a 5Dc was on every hobby centric photography sub-forum I frequented in the mid 2000's. On the car forums especially, you knew before even viewing the exif data if they were shooting with a full frame Canon. That 1D mkII through 5D mkII era in retrospect seems so much longer than it actually was.
I chanced across a 5d a few years ago for $30 AUD (about 12 USD) I had no hopes but after the first shot I fell in love. This camera will go to the grave with me. The photos it produces are nothing like I’ve ever shot or am likely to. It’s not a camera, for those who know, it is THE camera. Great review!
I had one when they were new, stupidly sold it, and lusted after it for ages. I found one at Cash Converters for around $100 as it seemed to have a broken LED screen, and no focus screen. I had a battery charger already plus many batteries, and a spare focus screen. The broken LCD wasn't, it was just the glass protector.. I still use it along with my 5D4 and R. It's still a fantastic picture maker.
Love this camera so much. Scared the absolute crap out of me the other day when something rattled inside it and the viewfinder went black - it turned out the mirror had come loose from the shutter, and was just chilling in there, unlike me completely freaking out - but this is a known and documented issue, to which the solution was simply (but very carefully) superglueing it back in place. Thinking about it now, not only is it an early digital camera to start with but also it was my grandad's before mine, who bought it new, used it heavily (like professional heavily) for maybe 15 years, followed by another 3 or 4 in my possession... I'd really taken this absolute beast for granted! So thank you 5D, and thanks for making this video :)
Very interesting video on a "true" classic digital SLR, and you have hit the nail on the head - technology may have moved on, however the results from this camera just prove it is a Golden Oldie, that should be respected with honour.
Thanks. The 5D classic take great photos... not just great photos "for its time"... and its a full frame camera you can buy for a couple hundred bucks. ;)
I had my 5D classic for about 7 years before I was able to get a 6D as my main camera and my 5d was the second camera. One I got a 5d MKII, I retired my 5d classic. I agree that the original sensor on the 5D classic. Definitely gave you more analog looking. Images because of the warm. Color science at the camera had.I probably could have kept it just for that feature, but. I just wasn't shooting with enough to justify. Hanging on to it. So I traded it in for some else. Definitely a good. Camera for a first time digital shooter. Especially if you want full frame.
Yeah, I would definitely recommend it to people who want to focus on learning the fundamentals. It's a simple no-nonsense body that isn't bogged down by feature-bloat / incoherent interface.
I just bought one about a month ago and ive really been enjoying it so far. The shutter sound is so enjoyable. I have a pentax super takumar 50mm on it at the moment
Youve done a great job of exp.aining the beauty of this camera and the photos it produces. Ive had one since 2007 and still love her, but have struggled to explain coherently to others what it is about the pictures she produces that is so magical. I can forgive the iffy screen, early years of oil getting flicked onto the sensor and having to stick the mirror back on with superglue for the simplicity of use and beaty of her output and will never sell her.
Thanks. This camera does a lot of interesting things. I think maybe the antialiasing filter introduces a tiny bit of halation the way film does. On top of that, it’s just really easy to use. I’m glad you managed to glue the mirror back in place. :)
It's amazing how canon in 2005 built such performance parameters. While a pseudo-mirror of one year recorded one raw file for 7 seconds! and the camera was not working at that time)
Bought 5D classic on 2014 (second or ? hand) from ebay, in great condition and still use it as my (main) all-around camera. Great video - thanks for sharing!
I have the 5Dmk1 to 5Dmk4. Of the four cameras, the 5Dmk1 is my favorite. The colors are very film-like, and it never fails to impress. The lenses I use are 24x70Mk1 and Mk2.
I started my hobby with a Rebel 2000 way back in film era. When it came to getting into DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY, my choice was simple. It had to be a Canon. After a lot of research I bout a used 70D with 18-135 standard lens. All was going well and I was enjoying taking pictures with my 70D. One day I I saw a video about the 5D Classic and got curious. Started watching more videos. Decided to bite the bullet and bout one in 2020. That was it, I was hooked. Since then my 70D is in the bag. I bout few lenses for my 5D. 50 1.4 Supertakumar, 135 Supertakumar, 28-75 2.8 Tamaron. The Camera is special and I don’t think I will ever let this one go. If anyone is on the fence and if you are more into portraits and general photography, this one is a no brainer. One thing I picked up is not trying to go RAW only with this. JPEG on this one is not bad at all. You won’t feel the need to edit if you get your settings right in JPEG.
I agree, the jpegs are great off this camera, and that’s generally what I do just because it simplifies the workflow. When shooting with manual lenses in aperture priority mode, I like to compensate the exposure down a stop since I find the camera to shoot a little hot… which is fine in raw, but gets a little messy in jpeg, IMO.
I own an old 5D there is something about the shots that I find attractive and this was evident in your photos. You called it softness. I believe it is the 12.7 m pixel size when focus on a near object produces a very slow out-of-focus as the image recedes. Something a lens doesn't quite master it is a matter of pixel size. The more distant background objects become softer due to the larger pixels making for a gentle out-of-focused result. A softening of the background and yet still very visible.
your channel has so much potential. videos are very well written, and fun levels are nice. the change in mic quality and some moments where the edit llingers a bit, diminishes it a little. keep it up I hope to see you there.
First used the 5D in 2008 in my first photography job and first year of photography. We were reunited in 2020 after a measly $250, a few RU-vid hype videos, and some accessories. Awwww 💙
rocked my 5D classic for many years, great camera for anything except low light. i really liked the subtle green tones the camera has to give kind of a vintage rendering
Great review, and great shots! Your channel is criminally underrated, and I hope you get to 1000 subscribers (and more), because you really deserve it. Cheers! //Rick
Just picked up a 5d classic for $130.00. No lenses, one battery and a charger. My first full frame (since film). Been using a 7d1. Great video, thanks!
Canon 5Dc is my all time favourite camera, but I must confirm what some others saying - the sensor isn't soft. Just the opposite. Canon 5Dc has a very weak AA filter, so on pixel level it is actually sharper and crisper than 5D MKII or 6D. Put on some premium EF L glass (nifty fifty is crap). Yes, newer cameras have more resolution but as far as pixel acuity, 5Dc is sharpest. That softness is more of a result of pastel colors, mellow tonal gradations and filmic contrast, when viewing image normally.
Hell no! Still own one and love to shoot it! I find no difference in image quality between it and a more modern camera, specially in print, and I have quite a few to compare it with. Ask me to choose just one camera and lens and the 5D Classic with the good ol' trustry Canon 24-105mm f4 IS is a MUST! And the color science is AMAZING!
Like I said, we’re at a point where it’s all just splitting hairs. Cameras are amazing, find the one that feels best in your hand. :) oh, and don’t spend too much money either.
This had me dying on floor laughing 😂. Beside being knowledgeable and taking great photos, you have added personality in this video! I have subscribed and will be looking forward to future uploads
Yeah, I did somewhat conflate resolution and sharpness here. Honestly, I don't obsess over these things too much... I'm not a more-is-better kind of person. Clearly! I made a video about how I use a 17 year old DSLR and love it. That said, what I think (and failed to mention in the video) is that the softness is likely attributable to the sensor's AA filter rather than its resolution.
I have one, and it produces fine image quality. Bells and Whistles it does not have, but if you can produce great photos, you will do so with this camera.
Funny how modern cameras like Fuji seem to stylize in a more neutral manner for their most popular film simulations, while this older canon just PAINTS color vibrantly. I suspect it’s a combination of limited dynamic range technologically and early days of post processing. They probably tried getting it right IN CAMERA so only minimal processing was needed. I think I read someplace they were working with Kodak trying to emulate Kodachrome but then again, every company says that regarding Kodachrome and digital.
I can definitely see that Kodachrome influence in the blues, and I agree it seems more like they pushed for the punchier colours in-camera… which kinda makes sense giving the crushed dynamic range of reversal films. Probably a wise goal.
I think the images giving slight "softness" and not sharp as the modern cameras, are the results of vintage lenses you are using. Because this is one of the sharpest cameras out there, if you used modern EF lenses it is shaper than say the same lens on a 5div. I have Nikon d810, which is supposed to be one of the sharpest due to not having an OPLF, but the 5D is sharper with cheap 50 1.8 lens than d810 with gold ring nikons, like 14-24
I bought one when it first came out for $3300, still have it, it's in pristine condition. It fell into disuse for what ever reason, but, I put a 40mm 2.8 on it and it suddenly became a desirable camera to use. Probably was that light pancake lens that made the difference, lol.
How do you use vintage lenses on a Canon DSLR? I know about the adapters with chip and the focus confirmation when you nail focus, but i don't figure how do you make your exposure. Is with aperture priority mode? Or manual mode? Can the camera calculate exposure with manual lenses? It could be great a video about the topic. I have a small collection of vintage manual lenses that I used with mirrorless. But now I only shoot old and cheap Canon DSLRs and want to use my vintage lenses.
BenQ had cameras?! Yeah, the 5D holds up surprisingly well. By todays standards it lacks a lot of features, but IMHO that just makes its easier to use. Turn it on and take (full frame) photos.
Great video Tyrone👏I'm thinking about purchasing a 5d classic. Is there a link for the mentioned adapter you recommended? Thank you for your help and keep rocking the vintage world🤘
Have used the 5DC for a couple of months with the 40mm 2.8 pancake lens with great results. Very sharp. I even have used 1600 iso for inside shots with very pleasing results. My only gripe is blowing out the sky in landscape shots due to limited dynamic range. Ordered a 28-85 f3.5-4.5. Interested to see how this works out. Just learned that lens data can be loaded into Canon s photo editing software to adjust for vignetting and CA. Stick to higher serial numbers for more robust mirror better LCD and updated software. Mine is over 35xx. The mirror fell out of my first 5DC. Thanks for your thoughts
Yeah, I’ve found it tends to overexpose, which isn’t too bad when shooting raw, but doesn’t do you any favours on jpegs. I generally have exposure compensation set down a stop. I also agree about shooting at 1600, way better results than anticipated.
I have had trouble adapting m42 lens to the 5D due to the nirror hitt The back of the lens. Curio What adapters you are usinf for Nikon glass. I have several ais and afd nikon lenses but they all seem to have some protrusion which could interfere with the mirror. @@gearheadchannel
Thanks. I haven’t used the 1Dsii myself, but being from around nearly the same time, and using the same image processor, I’d think they’d perform very similarly. That said, the higher res sensor in the 1Dsii likely introduces a hair more detail and noise. Honestly I think you’d see far more difference between the 5D and 5Dii, than the 5D and 1Dsii.
I can't choose between d1m3 and 5d. 5d seems to be more colorful, 1d seems to me more accurate and natural colors. The sharpness is unclear who is better
The 1Diii is a slightly newer body, so it likely lacks some of the character of the 5Dc, although it probably isn’t vastly different at the end of the day. The 1D is definitely a step up in terms of form factor and pro features though.
I'm doing some photogrametry and wondering if results would be good with the 5D, maybe more natural looking images would make a model feel a bit more real? The resolution is a drawback though..
Yeah, for a stills-only camera, the classic has an amazing look. I believe you can shoot RAW video on the 5Dii with magic lantern installed... and they're also pretty affordable these days as well.
Think your take on using the 5D is excellent.. It may be a tank but it’s rendering is great.. Get on to Martin Castein RU-vid channel…He’s a mega canon 5D photographer..
Great review my friend. I just pick mine up for $150. It’s the best $150 I ever spent and I’m having fun with it. But I’m thinking of picking up a 5D mark II. What’s your take on that?
Ive got two 5Dmii im fixing to put on ebay- i look thru the finder and menus and compare it to my Sony a7riii and a7iv, it seems really hard and clunky beast to use but it was awesome in its day
@@rubenv8440 its a piece of cake just dont use too much glue!!! I think I used a tooth pick to put a couple of tiny dots of superglue on it to avoid a glue dispenser disaster!! - good luck with it
Been using one of these since September 2021. It had about 6000 shutter actuations when I received it, and I know that because the previous owner never reset the file number. I bought it as a back-up camera to pair with my 7D Mark II, which was on its last days in that time (shutter had almost 200k actuations and rubber dials were worn out). Soon I sold the 7D and the 5D classic became my main and only camera. I like its tones and ISO noise, which are similar to film. Yes, it may be very slow and limited, but I’ve done serious jobs with it, mainly for press and photojournalism to a local newspaper of my hometown. I think that it will last for 2-4 more years, because it is like a brick, even if its sensor sucks dirt as fuck.
It blew me away as to how filmlike it could be, and for it’s limitations… I think those might be it’s strength. No-nonsense picture-takin’ As for sensor dirt, still better than mirrorless… ugh!
An adapter is required to mount a Nikon lens onto a canon body. If your Nikon lens has an aperture ring, all you need is a basic adapter. If your lens is a g-type lens without an aperture ring, you’ll need an adapter with an aperture control tab.
Why are people using film even today, when there's digital? Exactly the same thing. It's a camera. It makes photos you take. So stop asking stupid questions. The glass is important, not the camera.!
Ok - not even with the EOS webcam utility?@@gearheadchannel - All said Thanks my friend - I really enjoyed your video - fun to watch and informative. Subscribed and thumbed up.
Lol - @@mikaelbianco - I totally agree. I was able to use it as a webcam (I was really just a bit curious) I got it to work using Magic Lantern, but it was too unreliable. All said, I love the 5D, a great camera and a true work horse with the bones Canon still uses today. Have a great day ...
I have 5D Classic, 5DII and 5DIII. Using all of them regularly...5Dc, if I want a truly film-like look, 5DII with its cooler tones to slap a modern filter effect on the pictures in post, and 5DIII, if I want vibrant colors with good dynamic range.
I just snagged one and I was surprised at how awful the ergonomics of this camera are. Nothing feels natural. My Nikon d200 from the same year smokes this camera in everything except that it’s apsc. The 5d feels like a joke next to that camera.
I’m not too sure exactly what you’re asking. The pitch, or DPI (in this case PPI) is relative to your enlargement factor. There is no intrinsic pitch for a digital image as it has no intrinsic dimensions.
@@gearheadchannel in a RAW file of canon 7d it have 240 dpi but the image it have a 72 dpi i mean resolution ... this is what i neet to know in a JPEG file info of canon 5D classic
The max resolution of the 5D Classic is 4368 x 2912. The DPI/PPI value of the file the camera outputs is just arbitrary metadata, and is ultimately meaningless, as the true PPI is defined by giving the image real-world dimensions.
