@@MelbourneFoodforest do you have to keep the Oca cool on days over 30 degrees? I would bring it inside but I don’t have air con. I read that in my research. If true it’s the only plant I’ve ever owned that would need that so I’m skeptical

Great critics, sounds like a good one to grow. I have heard it won’t do any good in the subtropics, so maybe I need to stick with my taro, cassava and yams. Worth trying sometime though I think. Cheers

Thanks Chris - give it a go in shade where you are, it might surprise you. I've found a lot of conventional plant wisdom about tropics vs subtropics can be overcome with some clever microclimate tricks.

My tiny tubers have just arrived from Tassie. I'm in Temperate zone Qld so I'm ready to experiment and see how they do. I'll plant some in pots and some in the ground. Thank you and your little taste testers. I had no idea previously how they would taste or how to use them. Looking forward to my first harvest.

Ninja wichety grubs? People with no arms and lots of eyes? Haha, the ocas are not the only cute little gems here. Thank you both for this delightfully informative and entertaining few minutes.

When you put it that way Perry Sivo oca sound positively terrifying. I'm glad you were entertained by something other than sport 🤣

@@MelbourneFoodforest How about you grow the ocas and I watch the ockers play sport. Sounds about right 😆.

Thanks for this! I will see if I can get my hands on some. Not sure how they will fare over the hot summers here in Central Victoria, but the pesky oxalis certainly likes it here in the winter! I am I right in thinking they take most of the year to mature? Such cute little taste-testers you have.

Thank you 💚 Oca can be funnily quite hard to source, I got mine online from Queensland. There should be mail order suppliers as it holds up well in post. I think it should handle the Central Victorian summers with ease, being related to a weed certainly helps :) Just plant somewhere shady! That's right, takes about 9 months, plant in spring and forget, and harvest in winter.

Hi there, I would love to know how you went about planning the design of your garden! And how you learnt about gardening and growing food. I'm just starting out and am looking for good resources. Thank you!

Hi I will be posting a garden tour on youtube (focussing on structure and design) as well as more tutorials soon. I will also be launching my own website with detailed articles about plant selection, light & shade and lots of useful resources in the next few weeks! My Instagram and Facebook pages are filled with gardening tips and tricks. Hope that helps! Cheers

Do you have recommendation where is best to get the seeds/tube in Melbourne? I am interested in planting veggies and fruits that can’t be found in the market, an extra motivation to plant and harvest unique edibles ☺️

Hi, while Oca is simple to grow, the hardest part can be getting your hands on some tubers in Melbourne! Oca holds up well in post so check out mail order garden suppliers. I got mine from a Queensland supplier. I will have some tubers on my website too once launched. And it is very exciting to grow unique edibles isn't it? :)

I just bought some in the green grocers in Station Street, Fairfield. I’m going to try and grow the pink tubers shown here. They were reasonably priced.

@@gayedawn1 Ah... good ol’ Station St. Fairfield. Lived in Alphington close to the train station in the early 90s. Always loved Fairfield. I guess it’s changed a lot now. Just nice to hear the names, haha. Good luck with your Oca. I too just got some from the grocer. Pink ones. Just about to plant some of them right now. AND thanks Melbourne Foodforest for the vid👍
