Interesting listening to these guys from that era. The era without boundaries in every aspect of life. It took alot of surfers down because of the culture. The honesty and humbleness saved these two and alot more of it from many of that era would help alot of unknowns.
i could listen to tom carroll and occy talking about pipeline and surfing for hours! its too bad that basically no one on tour follows the steps of tom and occy! you guys and curren are still my favourite surfers ever! such an inspiration! thanks occy nice podcast!
In an interview with Occy at maybe 17years old, he said that if he didn't surf he'd like to go into entertainment, so fast forward 35 odd years and a surfing world title later, bucket list # 2 has now been ticked. Well done legend!
tom is a living legend, all the negative vibes will go nowhere..when you have o deal with lifes challenges ,then you you will see how strong real men are. he is a real surfer and and a real man.thanks tom for your inspiration.
Got to meet Tom and his wife back when his daughter was one yr old they couldn't have been a nicer couple , glad to see they are doing good and has two more daughters . that don`t surf ? keep on going Tom ..
Tom Carroll. Shark expert. The information he has is unbelievable. Wow. I just started watching this a couple weeks ago Occy should be on Australian news show. Old guys rip!!!
My Tom Carroll story. I was surfing Sunset with a mate in the mid 90's. It was bigger than I was comfortable with so I was doing my usual trick sitting in the channel with no shame while my buddy was catching waves in the hook like he normally does. Tom and a mate paddled out and Tom tells me "You gotta sit in the hook man." After Tom, his mate and my buddy caught a few waves and tried to convince me to move to the hook as they paddled out Tom finally said "We aren't going to drag him out there without a chain". 30 minutes later or so Tom had caught a wave and was paddling back out when a set wave came at me IN THE CHANNEL and it looked like it was actually going to break! Tom yells "GO FOR IT!" so I paddled as hard as I could and dropped down the face of the wave with my fins screaming and rode the wave as close to the shore as possible and paddled in. Yea, I'm a wimp (and proud of it) but Tom was the most powerful surfer I ever saw on the North Shore.
Occy's such a good host, this is the best episode by far, he should do Gerry Lopez next, or other surf legend like Greg Noll, Mickey Muñoz, Pete Townsend. Those guys have the best stories.
yes i am a hippy at heart, a life long vegetarian, surfer and nature lover..... unfortunately we have made a huge imbalance. my local surf spot is getting very sharky... its sad to say but we need to have a great whit shark cull to even the balance. closely monitored, maybe 1, 2 or upto 5 year cull. documented.
The sharks are copping it too. Shark finning accounts for huge tonnage each year. More people in the water than ever. Don't go in low light, murky water and/or fish schools and the odds are tiny.
Sooo ----- at 34.28 something ..."a drone"???.... comes into the left hand screen just left of TCs head, stays for 2/3 seconds and then rises and "disappears" above the horizon water line ---- anything on that would be nice to settle the questions in ma head ...
Carrol fucking killed it as well as Occy I grew up in the era thank god Encinitas crew north coast San Diego Todd Martin Joey buran gerlac really back in the day most of the boys fucking killed it
Occys interviews are pretty fuken awesome but its annoying to watch him dropping in sometimes here on the goldie the kund but still think he is a champ and Tom Carrol man... look at that guy he's an even greater legend than occy, he's like king level just like slater level. I sincerely hope you guys keep that good fresh clean mind going and keep doing good things for surfing and always keep achieving that old stoke. Yeeeew beloved kuntz!
farming salmon has been going on for years here. in the states. i dont understand why they dont just harvest the males after they swim up stream to spawn and die naturally.
Tom is like 5" 5, I got his autograph years ago and I could see the top of his head. He's awesome, absolute legend, fantastic surfer and always warm to people.
yes, humans are fishing out a lot of fish...but the ocean has more fish than we can eat...we should still try to be careful...but shark attacks are up because of how many people swim and surf now all over the world. and seal populations are getting bigger because we're cleaning the ocean now more than ever
