14 days ago I took part in OCC by UTMB, a 55km mountain race. It was EPIC!! You can watch the video here:
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cMT-i3kds5Q.html
In the lead up to the race (for the last 8 months actually) I've been suffering from a range of symptoms, and despite a million doctors visits, I was pretty much told that nothing was wrong and I was probably just hyper aware of my body and training a bit too hard. But after ordering some tests privately, I realised something really WAS wrong, and insisted on another doctor's appointment. Finally, this week, I got the results.
I am NOT looking for sympathy or advice, I'm only sharing because a) I am sadly unable to take part in the 250km ultramarathon I was due to join next week in Sweden and b) I know unresolved fatigue is super common, and thought this would be worth highlighting in case anyone else is suffering. It's super common but I imagine under-diagnosed.

I'm sorry Flora, but I'm so glad you were persistent in getting answers!! I feel like I know so many female athletes with health issues that take a long time to get diagnosed, probably partly due to females being less included in scientific trials. I also had heart palpitations and major fatigue November-December last year and finally got a blood test and thankfully it was just low iron which I could correct easily. Anyway, take care of yourself and I look forward to seeing updates! I also had mono after college and it totally took the doctor by surprise because I was still exercising, but then very fatigued in general 😋

I am so sorry you contracted EBV. It has such frustrating and potentially destructive long term effects, especially for runners. I contracted EBV when I was 16 and it wasn’t picked up on for almost 10 years. The constant fatigue that I’ve been plagued with just wasn’t taken seriously and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome still isn’t accepted widely enough. I hate that if I push past the fatigue that I will be recovering for weeks and I have to monitor my fatigue levels daily. The main thing is to keep up your nutrition, hydration and sleep. Back off the physical activity when you start to feel a bit off. Keep yourself as mentally well as possible too. You know yourself well enough. I hope that you get on top of it really soon and I’m sending love and hugs your way ❤

So sorry you had to deal with that! Yes i think it's super common but absolutely not well treated by doctors. My partner has had CFS for 20 years now, so he understands the frustration. Thank you for sharing

Aww Flora, I’m so sorry but also pleased you have a diagnosis. I had a similar experience a few years ago and my only advice is to be incredibly kind to yourself. It’s easy to get frustrated when the body doesn’t cooperate. I tried to treat mine like a bank account. The more energy I could bank (by resting) the bigger my pay out would finally be. It payed off and I’m sure with your level head you’ll find a way that works for you. Wishing you all the very best. Xx

Congrats again Flora, great self analysis and indeed a stellar result given your 2023. Don't feel bad about pulling out of Tribe, absolutely the right thing to do - esp given the 225 distance and multi day stress, its one event at the end of the day re EBV. Better to skip one race than miss 5 or be out for a long time due to overstressing the body and then gettng really ill/doing damage, or getting injured due to making a mistake when fatigued and not being as alert. I'm sure having a diagnosis for your varied levels of fatigue will be of mental relief, which should help reduce your stress levels. Sometimes its the old (and frustrating when wanting to be active) slowly slowly catchy monkey expedites a better ending rather than chasing it! Good luck with your recovery and yea take it really easy, i had EBV - then Glandular Fever when 20 and carried on pushing myself training/eventing. It quickly caught up with me and put me on my arse for 3 months, literally, and a further 6 months to make a recovery of sorts, was 9-12 months after that before getting back on true pace. Definately time to listen to your body and get some easy dog walks in or even some fossil hunting down on that Dorset coast 😉!

Well done for persisting in getting a diagnosis and keep listening to your body, you're still young and you WILL recover. Be kind to yourself, that's something I've learned the hard way and I'm still learning, even now at my great age!! (I'm a 70 year old Ironman triathlete). Our instinct as long distance athletes is to keep pushing through the pain and fatigue but sometimes that's just not good. Stay positive, we're all here for you.

thank you for sharing Flora, and I hope you have a speedy recovery (or as speedy as possible!). It is really helpful for you sharing these things so we can be aware. As you say, GPs don't really know about problems in runners. I've even had difficulty persuading the GP I had an iron deficiency (my husband had even more trouble - and he was really deficient.) thanks again and all the best - ps I was in Chamonix too my husband did the CCC - amazing run on the OCC - well done!

Good on you for your sensible advice on not being lead by the the training and the just get it done attitude often seen in RU-vid running videos. I went to my doctor last year when every run seemed to wipe me out. I wasn't sick, just tired so I just let my body rest, walked and hiked till I felt ready to run and it worked, then built gradually. It really worked well for me.

You smashed it, one of your best performances, considering the elevation and mental struggles...(repeat) one of your best performances!!! AND you have recovered very well, and are living the life most of us can only envy! Amazing! You achieved all this despite being sick! As you said "better than I've ever done in any race before" (pacing). By the way, I was getting consistently very high heart rate readings, and found out that my HR monitor was 'cadence locked', and was reading my high 170s cadence many times. I switched HRMs and immediately felt better....something to look into .....well I hope you get some more races in soon as it seems you're in peak shape. You've done extremely well, both performance-wise, and in terms of recovery.

Great recap! Congrats again on an incredible race! I'm so glad you finally have a diagnosis. I went through weeks of bizarre symptoms, and thankfully i had a proactive doctor. She had a couple gallons of blood drawn, and they discovered it was Lyme disease. It's a very common illness here that they rarely test for, which is outrageous, because without treatment, it destroys your body, brain, and life. I'm glad you advocated for yourself and got the answer. Your upcoming videos might not be exciting, but they'll certainly be relatable and helpful to many of us!

Kelly/ben just read your point, Great comment ! Yea i do alot in the Lakes and people are more on the look out for it given we are used to being around ticks/sheep, but it's shocking the ignorance around it, from both an indivdual perspective in the intial symptoms but also the medical profession. It should be taught in schools! I had a friend at Uni who was getting progressively worse and i said to her to get a check for Lyme's as she had tied it down to not long after doing the west highland way. Sure enough nearly 2 years of being told no abnormalities came back postive. It is super serious condition and so easy to catch, with life altering issues if not caught. It would actually be worthwhile in this being an episode in itself, as the amount of people that go off for weekend events in the Lakes, Wales, Scotland or up here for a weekend and not really appreciate the dangers lurking. Incidently its really prevalent on the South Coast also so even taking your dog for a walk across the fields!

I was so surprised when you mentioned the IT band issues halfway through and how long you'd been struggling, I was in the exact same boat and have just recently tried doing what you recommended, increasing cadence and glute strengthening, as well as foam rolling which all seem to be helping. What do you think caused the IT band issue to come back this time? Do you have any other videos or info on the glute strengthening and anything else that worked for you? Thanks!

I was really hammering the downhills and my form wasn't perfect, because my quads had started to cramp on the first descent, so I think I wasn't shock absorbing as much as I could have done. I got EBV in April 2018, and it wasn't diagnosed until July (also had an ECG and blood tests etc). I felt awful until August and extremely fatigued until November. The tail was long, it is hard to know when I felt fully back to normal - in retrospect maybe by Feb 2019. It was mentally tough as I kept thinking "am I still fatigued or have I gotten out of shape...?". Hoping that you will feel better soon, but know that full recovery is the most likely option

I was hit really hard by Mononucleosis when I was 21. Got hospitalized due to high fever. It lasted about a month and just one week later, I startet as a soldier... The first month was HARD! But then my strengh startet comming back quite quickly. One strange thing was, that for almost a year I could not have any alcohol. If I had any, I felt bad and sick, and I didnt have any desire for alcohol really, in that periode. It wasn't a social problem for me, as I just told the truth why I prefered to drink something else, when "the boys" had weekend partys (every weekend...). Looking back, I think it was actually a lucky and good thing for me. But I still remember the fever, the headache, the total fatique from when I was sick. Stay healthy, get all the sleep you can, relax and be patient. You will get through it.

Sad news, but also good that you know and can beat the virus. My son had a similar virus that caused chronic fatigue and he couldn't do a few minutes of exercise without needing to lie down. It took several months to get over it, but he did, and you will, get through. He's running the 50K Ultra with me on 1st Oct, but I rolled my foot on a run last night and the tendons are sore and the foot is swollen! Hopefully, it will be fine in 2 weeks, but having prepared so well up to now, will I be able to do the run if I can't do any exercise until the race?

Ah sorry to hear that about your son! Glad he's better now :) I would say a) speak to a physio if you can and b) try to get in at least one run a few days before the race to assess the damage. I imagine it'll be fine unless you've torn something, but you'll be more likely to go over it on the race again, so you want to make sure it's OK to run. 50k is a long way!
