You need them for automatic operation with PC control: decoder for track occupancy detection. Modules with the S88 bus, which were developed by Märklin in the 1980s at the beginning of model railroad digitization, are widespread.
Are they now outdated and insecure at that? This video explores this question and compares some modules in extreme situations. The basic technical implementation of occupancy messages in 2- and 3-wire systems is examined as well as cabling with patch cables according to the S88 or S88-N specification.
