Footage of our first post-lockdown trip of the year to Ocean Beach Pleasure Park in South Shields and Rainton Arena Spring Fair.
After a difficult winter, it was good to get out and about again and feel the electric atmosphere that you only get at fairs and while there was still social distancing in place, (and masks had to be worn at all times at Rainton) it was another step in the right direction. Both fairs were well presented and very popular, which only added to the positive vibe of getting on some great rides again.
In terms of the rides, there was a great selection at both fairs. The highlight at Ocean Beach was without doubt Speed Buzz. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced a more intense cycle on a KMG Booster before and it was absolutely awesome, but not for the faint-hearted. Ice Jet was living up to its reputation as the best presented ride in the country and was also running a very good enjoyable cycle. Nothing will beat the Break Dance in terms of cycle length though, with our ride lasting just short of 7 minutes! The operators seemed to find the perfect combination of intense and enjoyable spinning as well, which I guess was essential for a ride of that length.
Rainton Area was a stop-off point purely due to Xtreme and Techno Power. Xtreme is the best travelling ride in the country in my opinion (potentially joint with Air, but that seems to have vanished at the moment) and makes any event it attends well worth a visit. Having gone over a year and a half without a go on it, it was great to experience its power again. I’d got used to Samurai at Thorpe Park and while I don’t think it’s a bad ride in the slightest, it’s got nothing on Xtreme and its powerful cycles. Techno Power was a new Extreme for me and was one of the better ones, with a very smooth enjoyable cycle. With restrictions in Scotland easing, it’s good to see it able to operate on home turf again, although I didn’t mind getting a go on it in England because of them.
South Shields is a beautiful seaside resort and has so much to offer as well as the rides so we’d definitely recommend a visit if you get chance. Rainton Arena is also an ideal location for future fairs too, although with restrictions hopefully due to fully end in the summer sometime, hopefully we can look forward to the return of the back-end fairs, especially Nottingham and Hull.
