Well I was in that storm on that day about 4 Miles away on the SEDCO 706. I went trough the whole storm and also have seen the wave that killed the Ocean ranger. This wave went also over our rig and damaged a main beam below by bending it and cutting the tube bundle that was used to sound the tanks and draft on one Corner. I did repair it in the morning below main Deck while the storm was on a litle less. One Year later on the same day another storm and the rig was evacuated except for 16 poeple and I had again to stay on board. Again Sedco 706 Drilling for Mobil. All in all it was a hary situation.

Lost my father and uncle. My uncle's body was recovered but sadly my father was never found. I miss him everyday. He started working on the Ocean Ranger in 1976 when it was in the Bering Sea. He rode it all the way around South America to bring it to the North Atlantic because it wouldn't fit through the Panama Canal. Thank you for uploading this video. My mom is on part 5 and 6. They came here to South Carolina to film the 20th anniversary of that terrible tragedy. RIP Ocean Ranger crew.

@@rainerrain9689 I actually have it on CD but thank you. My Mom is Mae Donlon and the other lady is my Aunt Ruth, my mom's brother's wife. Yes it was such a tragedy. I go to St Johns, Newfoundland on Feb 14th to attend the memorial service for all the men whom died. No survivors from this horrible accident.

I hate the way documentary narrators narrate in the present tense, it's so absurd. If it happened in the past narrate it in past tense for goodness sake.

Does anyone know, what the chain is for, that is wrapped around the drilling-pipe at 5:25?
@cyildelaney3560
@cyildelaney3560 7 лет назад
It is an old way of spinning chain to connect pipe. pipe has threads and this is how they would connect and disconnect with friction instead of newer designs. It is still used today when machinery fails.

I was starting construction of Balmoral FPV when this occurred! I kept notes of the problems and ensure the MPSS avoided them. I tried to male it the safest semi ever built as well as the cheapest. Problem is that fee have the training or experience to understand the internal systems required to ensure crew safety. Too many chances! We

This is the disaster that inspired me to design the MUlti-Purpose Semisubmersible, MPSS, much safer, less complex and less costly with restrictions on ballasting the removed control of critical ballast tanks from the operator.

www.uscg.mil/hq/cg5/cg545/docs/boards/oceanranger.pdf The American Government official inquiry into this disaster, is still on line at the link above. It's a detailed 150+page report. The report says that 1 had the personnel on board known of the capabilities of the ballast control system then the disaster could have been averted. 2. Spray running across the deck ran into the chain lockers and added to the list... The Canadian / Newfoundland inquiry and the press coverage of same tended to ignore these important findings.

I was a good friend of the dive super and he said the ballist control operator left a window port open and the wave flooded the controls , lucky for him he rotated out just weeks before the àccident!

Too sad to watch.
@equarg
@equarg 6 лет назад
JasonJason210 Yes, it is sad. But you watch to LEARN so it will never happen again. I see my self as a moderate conservative republican. But even I understand the need for rules and regulations. Take the fire code. They evolved from the Iraqui Theater fire (panic bars invented due to 404 mostly women and children dying in a fire). Not to mention the concept of business doors opening OUTWARDS not inwards due to the Boston Coconut Grove fire. Not to mention the strict rules following fire suppressant systems and access to escape routes due to the Triangle Shirt Fire. Even newer rules to the Happy Time fire in New York and the recent Station House Fire. The fire code is written in blood. Not ink. So while you feel "sad" you can't ignore the past. You must not forget it, nor try to make light of it. You must carry on, but make sure those who died did NOT die in vain. While they died (horribly I may add) their death has some meaning, that the living will carry on as a legacy. Perhaps save lives in the future. So when I hear people gripe about "regulations", I try to tell them where som of these regulations came from and WHY. Some, I admit ate silly. But many are there for a damn good reason!

Container ship, not trawler. Actually much was made of the sinking of the Soviet ship Mekhanik Tarasov. The Canadian Coast Guard did an investigation, and their report (title: Summary Report of Investigation Into the Circumstances Attending the Foundering of the Russian Vessel "Mekhanik Tarasov" in the North Atlantic, on February 16, 1982) was included as part of the Royal Commission (Volume 204 of Ocean Ranger Royal Commission exhibit). So actually, MUCH mention was made of it.
@ccmyart
@ccmyart 6 лет назад
I actually spoke to the lead investigator of the incident and he said the Mekanic Tarasov ran into the Ocean Ranger. Everything was covered up because of the cargo on the vessel. It was actually plutonium from the Chalk River storage facility. Our erstwhile leader. Trudeau was providing nuclear weapons material to Russia during the Cold War. He was a communist, after all.
