Well i think that Cate does that with all her female co stars when she is on stage or in a press conference. Its like, her little trick, i would think to get people to watch and promote her movies. I watched Carol and loved it! and then proceeded to watch the conferences and interviews...Cate is a great and convincing ACTRESS under any circumstances!!!...be it...before,after or during the film. .. Oh by the way Rooney Mara is great too!!!! in Carol...a must watch film

It must not be part of her contract and therefore not part of her talent fees. It could be a cost-saving strategy on the producers and/or it could be because she has prior engagements scheduled that are more important than promotional interviews.
