Yes, its clearly a continuation of the other movies - but - Sandra Bullock, de facto replaces Danny (Clooney), as the lead role. Her character clearly builds on the characteristics of Danny. The same thing goes for Lou (Cate Blanchett), her entire character, is a true copy of Rusty (Brad Pitt), which in really is the same, as remaking it. They should have created more distance to the original movies, instead of tricking people into thinking the movie is somethings its not.

One is a classic (or considered one by most people) and the other is an saga that many remember fondly but doesn't have many die hard fans, so I think it would suffer less from that (I could be dead wrong). I think that the movie will suffer from the comparisons, regardless of how good it is, my original point is that that suffering probably wont stream from the comparisons in quality, but in the mere fact that they are making it with a female cast, witch is upsetting many people, that will hate even if is Oscar worthy.

In another comment I argued that if they just made an unrelated movie with the exact same premise and called it something else, people would call it a rip off, and even if it can backfire using the name, many executives probably thought that giving it a "recognizable name" would make interest higher, they could be horribly wrong (I think at least the timing was off)...

Hollywood has noted the trend of original films not making very much money, no matter what the gender of the protagonist is. The general audiences of today have proven with their dollars that they HATE, HATE films with original IPs with all their heart. So... that leaves Hollywood in a sticky position as they don't want to lose money. So, they reboot and find ways to make the reboot different from the originals while retaining the name brand. "Oh, we can just switch up the genders."

It is a new story with new characters. It's a spinoff of the Clooney/Pitt films, not a replacement. Matt Damon is even supposed to make a cameo. And it isn't like those movies were original anyway, they started as a remake in the first place.

There are often a lot of them but a dedicated female cast or female lead works in different genres. Hidden figures was a big one recently. Wonder woman was good too. The new Star Wars and Rebels. The Hunger Games also, and Room. Spy was actually very good, with Melissa McCarthy. Also the Divergent movies, Allegiant and Insurgent. Now these don't all have dedicated women only casts but they do have a strong female lead and they worked great.

Have to disagree. The three Soderbergh Ocean's films are all what you are describing, this one has almost none of that. Very dull & barely any interesting character interactions. It feels like an Ocean's fan film, written by a less talented author and directed by a less talented director. I watched the Ocean's films dozens of times, but this one only twice, the second time was just now, and the funniest thing was, that i couldn't remember anything from watching it when it came out...left quite an impression that film...
