This fascinating industrial film advertises Oceaneering International's groundbreaking Underwater Atmospheric Diving Suit (ADS), known as JIM. An atmospheric diving suit or ADS is a small one-person articulated submersible of anthropomorphic form which resembles a suit of armour, with elaborate pressure joints to allow articulation while maintaining an internal pressure of one atmosphere. The ADS can be used for very deep dives of up to 2,300 feet (700 m) for many hours, and eliminates the majority of physiological dangers associated with deep diving; the occupant need not decompress, there is no need for special gas mixtures, and there is no danger of decompression sickness or nitrogen narcosis. Divers do not even need to be skilled swimmers.
The first JIM suit was completed in November 1971 and underwent trials aboard HMS Reclaim in early 1972. In 1976, the JIM suit set a record for the longest working dive below 490 feet (150 m), lasting five hours and 59 minutes at a depth of 905 feet (276 m). The first JIM suits were constructed from cast magnesium for its high strength-to-weight ratio and weighed approximately 1,100 pounds (498.95 kg) in air including the diver. The suit had a positive buoyancy of 15 to 50 pounds (6.8 to 22.7 kg). Ballast was attached to the suit's front and could be jettisoned from within, allowing the operator to ascend to the surface at approximately 100 feet (30 m) per minute.The suit also incorporated a communication link and a jettisonable umbilical connection. The JIM operator received air through an oral/nasal mask that attached to a lung-powered scrubber that had a life-support duration of approximately 72 hours, although actual survival for this time would have been unlikely due to thermal transfer through the magnesium body.
As technology improved and operational knowledge grew, Oceaneering upgraded their fleet of JIMs. The magnesium construction was replaced with glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) and the single joints with segmented ones, each allowing seven degrees of motion, and when added together giving the operator a very great range of motion. In addition, the four-port domed top of the suit was replaced by a transparent acrylic one that was taken from Wasp, this allowed the operator a much-improved field of vision. Trials were also carried out by the Ministry of Defence on a flying Jim suit powered from the surface through an umbilical cable. This resulted in a hybrid suit with the ability of working on the sea bed as well as mid water.
Atmospheric diving suits in current use include the Newtsuit and the WASP, both of which are self-contained hard suits that incorporate propulsion units. The Newtsuit is constructed from cast aluminum (forged aluminum in a version constructed for the US Navy for submarine rescue), while the WASP is of glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) body tube construction. The upper hull is made from cast aluminum. The bottom dome is machined aluminum.

I was in charge of the ADS systems in Brazil in late 1970's then in 1980 I got pulled to the USA and was Manager in charge of all ADS systems and its development world wide. It was called the Advanced Systems Group then and run from the head office in Houston and also in Morgan City. Record breaking dives to 1,760 feet in the Gulf of Mexico and the suits were world wide. Eventually I was not only in charge of ADS systems and saturation systems in the Gulf but also put in charge of Oceaneering's first ROV and that was it; the race was on and Oceaneering started its change to become a world leader in ROV. Looking back at so many years with Oceaneering around the world, starting with them in 1972 and Superintendent by 1974 and going on to late 1980's, I hardly believe now what we used to accomplish in those early years back then and the pioneering we did in going deep.

british engineering at its best,you can see my dad tony moore at 10.50 looking over the balcony.these suits were manufactured in alton,hampshire,uk where i live they were used in the james bond film for your eyes only where my dad was in charge of the diving suits and divers. my dad eventually ended up as ads director west coast division for oceaneering in the late 70's early 80's

I'm rob barnes, many yrs ago I went to the job centre looking for work, they sent me to a unit in alton hants where I meet with frank new, he was a tool maker x rae, he showed me jim 1,2 and three, all we had to do for a number of weeks was look after the suits, soon after peter mckibben joined us, then we meet the manager rod Mitchel, we went on to build jims 4,5,6 and 7, I also worked with your dad tony moore all of course top guys, where are they all today?, I'm now 63yrs and live in a small place called darwen nr Manchester, as a job, I deliver the food for my local indian takeaway.

I was a draughtsman at UMEL, the site was in Oakhanger, near to Bordon Hampshire.

I was the owner of Oakley Self Drive at Basingstoke and used to hire trucks to D H B. Costruction The manager still lives in Alton Hampshire Rod Mitchell. The divers were all crazy with no fear and my drivers would not sit with them when picking up or returning drivers. The British government would not finance the project at the time and the Royal Navy used the suits but had to have a dab diver on deck at all times. There is so much more to tell after 4-5 years with this company but I wish them all well. I did try on the suite at the test tank in Alton and will never forget the experiance.

I am very impressed by this suit. I have seen others that are way more maneuverable but this thing can actually walk!

7:03 Can opener. This entire suit is an engineering marvel as far as I'm concerned.

This suit may not be up there with POWERED ARMOR, but it's close enough for now!

I'm here because these suits were used in the films For Your Eyes Only (James Bond) and Deepstar Six (both from the 80s). I'm surprised these were legitimate underwater suits used in the films because the way they were designed made me think they were designed by a concept artist but now, I wish I've known otherwise. It's impressive piece of British engineering and a great look at for me.

ultrasonic passive capture and pressure equilibration in the case of mallfunction. it should work, the rest is ultrasonic cavitation.thank you for thrusting me.

You can actually SWIM in a Jim, climb steps, jump off ledges and carry out a piorouette. You can also stay underwater for 36 hours, drink tea, read a newspaper and eat your lunch.

Why these suits have not replaced saturation diving?
@downlink5877

Many reasons. How long have you got?
@DogDamour

How long have I got? sorry I don't understand what you mean. Anyway I guess the answer is the suits are very expensive as well, but mainly that the tasks performance is still very slow

Don't worry, it's just a figure of speech. Cost isn't the issue. ADS is dramatically cheaper than sat as no decompression, no gas, and a much smaller deck footprint. But quickly: ADS never took off because for some 20 years or so, the only system that could do anything was JIM, which only Oceaneering could use commercially. That meant the sales departments at other offshore diving contractors like Comex, etc., sold their clients off on that form of diving as they couldn't offer a competing product with it. That stopped every diving contractor having atmospheric systems and them becoming a ubiquitous sight in the oilfields. The other reason is that ADS filled a gap that existed in the market in the 70s / 80s because ROVs were just deck decorations on constant downtime, but with the development of technology, ROVs are fairly reliable enough now to fill most of the gap that ADS once exploited.

Someone who think this is scary?
@TheFelish33
@TheFelish33 6 лет назад
1:33 doesn't look like anything is helping it's movement like *Motor / Hydraulic,* it's pretty much just a thick tin can with movable joints & claw like fingers. I think it's more scary to be *in it* underwater hoping it doesn't leak or the extremely high pressure crushing you.
