Everyone has been asking if the new macOS Sequoia Beta is compatible with older Macs using OpenCore Legacy Patcher. I'll give you a quick status update on the current situation. Let me know if you have any questions!
I want to thank both Mykola Grymalyuk (khronokernel) & Dhinak G (dhinakg) for your work on OpenCore Legacy Patcher + all of the contributing developers that help maintain the patcher. OCLP brings new life to thousands of Macs and saves them from the recycler!

DISCLAIMER: Please understand that installing macOS Big Sur on your unsupported Mac is a best effort by the community. A ton of work went into getting the patcher to work! Some things might not work exactly right but it's really really close. I would not recommend installing on a system that you rely on for work or school. ALWAYS BACKUP YOUR FILES FIRST BEFORE YOU UPGRADE! The good news is that you are getting the latest security fixes from Apple. Some might argue that upgrading to Patched Monterey makes your Mac safer since Apple is no longer fixing security issues on 10.13 and below.

I'm definitely not one to jump on each new release. With my Mac 5,1 I held the line at Snow Leopard for ages. I eventually moved to Mavericks, skipping the intervening releases. That was followed by High Sierra, and then finally Mojave -- the last release with 32-bit application support, and the last supported OS. Over the past year I dabbled with OCLP and later macOS releases, but always on a separate "playground" drive. Last week I wiped that drive and installed Monterey via OCLP 1.5.0. I then added a Mojave VM under Parallels for my handful of 32-bit apps, and am endeavoring to do all my work with that configuration. So far, no real issues.

This very sensible down to earth cautionary update from Mr. McIntosh is exactly why he is one of the best on RU-vid. I say one of the best because I have to give a shout out to Jessie‘s Flying for being another fantastic presenter of helping us with our old max and OCLP. Both of these guys deserve so much credit and appreciation for the work they’re doing helping all of us other goofballs.😄😄

I only have found the one for macOS High Sierra video here in your channel. I would really appreciate your answer. Thank you so much. Great videos!

I think that if your Mac is old enough to need OCLP to run the current MacOS, then it's a really bad idea to run a beta version of the next version on it, unless you're willing to wipe the system clean if it breaks

My bet is this is the last Intel supported major version of macOS. Quite a lot of functionality is now missing on Intel machines, and it’s probably already time to say goodbye.

@@yorkan213swd6the ability for people to keep updating the things they paid for is more important to me and I’d say to most people than some nebulous claim of legacy crud. That’s not how OSs are compiled. The heart of MacOS is mostly what it was in the PowerPC days. Third party binaries now have broad x64/ARM64 support and companies are going to keep that around for a long tine to come - with no impact on yourself. Even universal binaries are barely bigger than their arm counterparts. I won’t notice any difference when it’s dropped as an M2 user. Neither will you, but millions of people will. It’s not about architecture it’s about consumers.

You're referring to the first message, which he posted on June 9th, the day before the WWDC keynote. He used the word "preemptively," which means he was getting that message out ahead of time, in anticipation that some people would get excited, install the betas way too early, and break their system in the process,

I took the same risk by installing macOS 15 beta on my MacBook Pro 2015 just to see the difference. Just the root patches were not able to update. It was great to see OpenCore do its work though. Played around for a while and then reloaded macOS 14.5. I will now wait for the official release. It was good fun though.

Own a 2015 MacBook Pro with R9 AMD graphics the best in this series. I haven't even upgraded to Sonoma yet, as I am still on Ventura I believe 13.5.5? I will move from Ventura to Sequoia when it is officially supported on our aging macs. Being Ukrainian myself, I want to thank Mykola for all his hard work - Yes, we Ukrainians are hard working people and this is testimony to Mykola for allowing us to use our older machines. What happened to Mac -users that they are now so eager to update. The used to be of the "if it works don't brake it" type. I love OCLP but really I can wait, a long time even, as my MacBook Pro 2015 is fine with 14.5 on it.

I'm that type, i still have Monterey installed on my 2015 MacBook Pro and will keep using it until certain things require an update. The years of windows updates making my laptop worse actually have me traumatized to update even though i know MacOS is smoother with the updates.

I can wait too. My 2015 MBP is just fine on (I think) Monterey. I don’t use it very often since I’m WFH now and I bought a Studio last year. One thing I’m certain of is that eventually Apple will crack down on OCLP and I really want something that just works. What will piss me off is when they stop security updates and I have to replace the laptop.

the Reason I am here is to see if OCLP was ready for Sequoia because it did show as a Beta update from Apple. I did try installing it but my Macbook Pro Year 2011 running Intel i7 could not boot up and the OS fell back to what it was running, SONOMA 14.6. Now I can understand that OCLP is not ready and Mr. Mac did explain very well. And I appreciate the group that had made OCLP possible to keep my old machine up and running with the champs!!! I guess I wait !!!
