THE BOAT: Scow Bow Mini-Cruiser. 14’ long (4.25M,) with a 6’ beam (1.8M,) and a draft of 2’6” (0.77M.) She features twin keels and a Ljungström rig. Every design decision is made to keep her simple, strong, and watertight.
In this episode I make a panel out of HDPE plastic to hold my battery switch and 50A circuit breaker. I show how I use the drill-fill-drill method to install hardware in a foam core constructed boat, using an L shaped tool to scrape out foam in the vicinity of where the bolt will pass through. This ensures the nut and washer or backing plate do not crush the foam core when put under pressure. I dry fit several fittings and also install the deck over the port side’s coaming.

Do not trust that breaker until you test it. I have had breakers like that from Amazon that don't trip until way overloaded or trip constantly. Boat is coming along nicely!

Interesting, thanks. I also have a fuse box that will be the next component down the line. So this is just a little added protection.

If you’re going to cross oceans you might as well have two lifpo batteries for redundancy. Awesome build! Looks like you’re doing everything high quality on the structure.

Thank you. Two would be great but they are pretty expensive. I'll likely start with one and add one if needed later.

Nice to see some shiny bits of metal going on the boat even if it is just a dry fit. Just a couple of questions if you don't mind. Why did you decide tomount the electrical board so low in the boat? I would have thought that the higher the better would apply for something that needs to be kept dry. What blade did you use for cutting the HDPE sheet? Last time I tried to cut some I ended up with a mess.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 8 месяцев назад
The board was cut with the same blade I use for G-10 or fiberglass, it's a diamond edge made for cutting things like tile. The battery and switch/breaker panel are low to keep the weight low in the boat. I plan for these areas to stay dry because I don't have any through-hulls below the waterline, no engine shafts or anything like that. Also the only openings above are 2 air vents and 1 watertight hatch for entry into the boat. So my hope is the cabin will be very dry.

She’s coming along! I had a question also, is the whole boat going to be covered in one last layer of glass, then flipping it over and doing another final layer of glass?
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 8 месяцев назад
I was planning to have 1 last layer go over the top, but the deck feels so solid with the existing fiberglass + the multiple layers on the panel seams I'm starting to feel it would just be excess weight. The bottom will get more fiberglass than the deck, the area near where the keels mount will end up with the most, but that's all coming later.

@@ocean_capable_small_sailboat She’s going to be bulletproof! I’m looking forward to the keel fin castings as well. Great project captain perry, I’m really enjoying this build! Fingers crossed for 10k!!!

thank you for your videos! I'm currently building a small boat myself. When do you start with the sailing rig? I want to make mine similar to yours, but I don't know exactly how to implement it yet.

You're welcome! Glad you are enjoying. I'm just focused on getting the hull done before moving on to the keels and then the sailing rig.

How in the world will you keep the lines from the deck through the bulkhead from chafing? Seems like an obvious failure point. Maybe I missed something! Love the videos. Been subscribed from the beginning.

I hope I get you right and this helps you. He has shown a stanless steal tube with flared flanges for the through hole, for the line.

What would you estimate the mass of an average square foot of a glassed section of foam is? I ask so I can enter a rough value in a simulator. Looking online is more complex than I want, or is about keeping a house warm.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 8 месяцев назад
Once glassed maybe similar to same thickness plywood. 1.1lbs/sq ft.
@actual_nonsense

Thanks so much! Very cool of you to answer.@@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 8 месяцев назад
Sure. Maybe even .9lb or so, I think the end result is a little lighter than plywood. Most of the volume is taken up by the super light foam, afterall.@@actual_nonsense

Do you have a target weight for the entire boat?
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 8 месяцев назад
No, my priority is to make her very strong, and the weight will be what it will. But I'm also not looking to end up too heavy so I'm trying not to be excessive with the fiberglassing. It's a balance.

👁️👁️ Is the core foam or plastic - i thought it was plastic like a bucket?
@ottonormal5833
@ottonormal5833 8 месяцев назад
Its a high density foam out of plastic. I think.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat

The core is PVC structural foam. The Battery switch panel I made is HDPE.
