THE BOAT: Scow Bow Mini-Cruiser. 14’ long (4.25M,) with a 6’ beam (1.8M,) and a draft of 2’6” (0.77M.) She features twin keels and a Ljungström rig. Every design decision is made to keep her simple, strong, and watertight.
In this episode I attach the skeg with thickened epoxy and 3 layers of 10oz cloth. I then add fairing compound to the hull and sand it smooth.

Funny how people spend all that time fairing the hull to get the "perfectly smooth finish" and then paint it with anti-foul (anyone who's painted anti-foul, knows how not smooth that finish is) and then let the boat sit in the marina gathering barnacles, Perry I'm sure you're hull bottom will be fine.

Thanks! Between barrier coat and bottom paint there will be 5 layers going on. That'll likely cover any minor imperfections left behind.

I’m a builder not a craftsman. As I’ve been building my boat I do try to do the best I can, but I remind myself when something doesn’t come out perfect- “it’s a boat-not furniture”.

Another option for getting the skeg to fit the hull contour: Put a layer of painter's tape down over the area, use crazy glue to adhere sand paper to the painter's tape (rough side out, obviously), and then rub the skeg back and forth over the paper until it takes on the exact shape of the hull contour. Rats don't have hats where I live.

Been loving your progress on this boat. By watching your videos, I have become much more confident in my boat repairs using the West epoxy. I recently used fiberglass cloth for the first time in my repairs and I felt pretty sure of what I needed to do from watching this content. As soon as my boat is back in the water, I plan on upping my various contributions to my favorite channels.Thank you so much! Well my thoughts for what it matters are, it’s a great job you are making of this project and the documenting of the build on video, tops. I don’t follow closely but when I see a post on my homepage always watch them. It’s good to see your progress with this. Always enjoy it. It is shaping up really well. Been following some other channels but they are all renovations. Always look out for Sven’s posts also. The small craft really intrigue me. The other guy a Canadian Sailing Wave Rover something like that. His build was quick but he is a builder/carpenter by trade and he had a lot of experience. Congrats on progress.

Love the progress! I think a light fairing coat might be needed all over the hull. The weave on that carbon fiber might give the sea growth a place to bind to the hull. Not a perfection coat, but enough to smooth out the bottom. Just my 2 cents.

Two episodes I’m looking forward to 1) Installing the rotating mast 2) splashing into the water & test sail Joke idea, next week two videos: first edited as normal, second a multi-hour live stream labeled “paint drying “. Sort of curious as to how many views it would get. Honestly probably not enough to justify the effort. People have sent live feeds of their aquarium and there is the saying about things being more exciting than watching paint dry.

I'd really like to see some destructive/mock up testing on the lateral strength of the skeg/hull system. Maybe Sven could help you out with some estimates of mass, angle, and velocity. You surf down onto a submerged container and that skeg could be history.

@Garryck-1
@Garryck-1 3 месяца назад
@@paulgiusti9703 - I'm the one thinking linearly? In high seas and wind conditions, you should not be surfing down waves in the first place. That's what a Jordan Series Drogue is for... stops the boat from ever reaching such a dangerous point. Running before the wind is a very poor heavy-weather tactic, as a great many sailors have learned to their dismay.

At the end is your boat, your job, your time and your decision are the one that only matter. It seems that you put resin with brush but never roll the wet surface with metal roller. This is key to get all air bubble out and have good fiber lamination. This could be the reason why you find some spots that you are forced to sand down Looking forward to see the first splash.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 3 месяца назад
I have used the metal rollers in the past, but they are a real pain to clean. I find it's just as effective and easier to push out any bubbles with my hands and by pressing with the brush. It works well for me and this skeg layup had zero air bubbles.
@mauroceresa1219
@mauroceresa1219 3 месяца назад
@@ocean_capable_small_sailboat typically if you keep jar with acetone and you keep the roller there it helps a lot to remove the resine. Small surface like the skeg are ok either way, but bubbles under large sheets are more complicated. Great job. Looking forward to the splash, I’m really envious you found the courage to start this great project, maybe I’ll start mine sometime in the future. Good luck with your 10k subscribers.

I assume you are active military, so moving fairly frequently and travelling light. But a few inexpensive tools from Craig's List or Marketplace would really make your life easier. A bandsaw would be a game changer for you. And an angle grinder, and belt sander, and one of those folding/clamping benches (I don't remember what they're called). Once you're in the water, you can sell the tools or give them away. I hope you do fairing, within reason. It's quite easy to have a smooth finish, and feels and looks much better. I've been hoping that Yrvind would do some fairing, but he likes the "workboat" finish...

I’m with you completely on your way to close to perfection. A boat length away is good enough for me, closer than that and you have a collision on the ocean. And if you look close enough for perfection you can sand all year around for 300 years and still not get to 100%, you will always find new imperfections when you’re done with one spot.

Could be. It's only 6cm/2.4in deep at the leading edge, though. I could carry it all the way forward until it merged right into the bottom, but then I'd be increasing the wetted surface area which also means more drag.

Now I understand why many builders start their build bottom up . They only have to flip it once . I actually never doubted you'd launch it. Kinda weird because in my childhood there were homebuild boat projects EVERWHERE I lived near 3 or 4 pleasure boat manufacturers the biggest Bayliner and rynel. So boat builders on their time off work on their own builds. But of dozens of starts I only know of 1 that launched. Seen Yerevan has stopped his build 4sale to build his next boat now . I guess at 85 it's for the best .

I'm not sure. The last time I went cruising I just had one of those simple handheld Garmin units, which was waterproof and durable. Then I had paper charts and some on a laptop. Now I hear the way to go is with a tablet with all the charts you need. I think the tablet would stay in my cabin which should be pretty free of water. I'll just try to keep it out of areas that might get splashed. Then probably have backup navigation on another device like a phone or extra tablet.

Why didn't you make the carbon fiber a feature? It adds little the way you've done it so making it visible might've made the cost better spent. I'm not sure you can fix it from this point, but it certainly isn't doing harm. Just a missed opportunity. I'm looking forward to seeing you sailing as the proof of the design or otherwise will be undeniable. How long till launch do you reckon? It's been a long road but you are so close.

It can't really be shown off on the bottom because I have to have bottom paint. I just wanted 1 CF bottom layer. I'm targeting the start of this fall for launch.

@@ocean_capable_small_sailboat yeah, bottom paint sucks but your fall is ?October? So not long to go. One last question if you'll indulge me, what do you think it weighs now and what is your target dry weight.

I have no idea but I'll try to weigh it once it's on a trailer. I get this comment a lot.

@@ocean_capable_small_sailboat thankyou. I can estimate close enough I hope, I had an idea I wanted to model before mentioning to you. No need to reply, cheers.
