Octatrack MK2 Tip: Getting Creative w/ Thru Machines

New, shorter tip for you guys - playing rhythmically with trigs on Thru machines!
Like many other insights, this one started out as a complete mistake - I switched a Flex machine into a Thru machine and forgot to change the HOLD and RELEASE to INF - which resulted in the THRU machine letting the signal through for short bursts. This is an excellent way to manipulate incoming signals before you even get to the sampling stage.

when you went to adjust the filter of scene b you turned the knob back up (which still works, too), but if you hold scene and click the encoder it will delete the parameter lock a bit quicker

Totally, I noticed that the other day when I was watching it over haha! Sometimes I can't be bothered to clear it because the pressing of the encoder can be a bit finicky. But it is definitely the ideal way to go, since it clears the parameter entirely

That's fantastic...really shows you different people use this beast. So, if I understood your laat comment, you can record the results of what you were doing to another sample you can them use in a track? Sorry if that's a dumb question. I don't have an Octatrack...yet. I always just assumed it was just a bigger Digitakt. I was wrong. :P

That is correct! If I like what I'm hearing in one particular track, I can resample that into a record buffer which can then be manipulated itself in different ways. So you could potentially start with a single sample and build a whole series of patterns around the manipulation of that sample, and then just enter different samples into it and see what happens!

I do! I have some videos on them, but none specifically dedicated to it. Honestly they're complicated enough that I think it would warrant its own video, so I'll add that to the list. @kennyzhao what is the function of the Allen & Heath in the set up? Just more of an interface?

My Allen and Heath is routed as a stereo L/R input to my desktop's audio interface. Sometimes I have a turntable on the other side, or someone else can plug in for jams (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-44PukQcqLlQ.html). Or just an aux input in case someone wants to play something on their phone. It also just helps to have some master EQ/filtering on-hand :)

Just by ear, set the internal metronome of both to the same tempo :)

I want to link my Live and Octa. I have zero knowledfe of how to do this, but woukd reely like to have the ability to use the parameters available for editing sounds with both boxes. What might be the best avenue to pursue toward thus setup?

I actually just did a series of videos on that subject! Mainly I try to use the Octatrack as a send in Ableton, so that I can send any track over for sampling, and record it back into Ableton for processing.
