Sheet water had frozen and birds moved to ditches with moving water One mile paddle to where the birds were and picked out singles and doubles and left the big flocks roost on the ditch.
This is probably the best way to film a hunt that's in your face. No dumb metal music, camera angle is right down the barrel and the guy filming doesn't talk at all. Oh...and he's SMASHING 'em. Great vid 10/10 will share
The funny thing is I paddled a mile down this ditch to where I saw the birds (using binocs) and they moved back up the ditch about 1/4 mile, so I tried where I was and got nothing, then I paddled back about 1/4 mile and that is where this video is taken. I shoot my birds in about 20 minutes or so, but the majority of the flock flew further up towards the road where I launched my kayak. On the paddle back is where I took the video "Where should I hunt tomorrow", which was only a couple hundred yards from my truck. The wheat field (on the same side I was sitting on) is a full section (640 acres) that never got harvested. For a few days there were probably 30,000 ducks and geese in there. A week later , nothing. I am actually surprised at the number of people who watch these videos. I began posting them here so I could embed them into some forums I belong to . If you enjoy bird hunting, you may want to go to "duck hunter's refuge" and "duck hunting chat". Great guys on both sets of forums.
+Warren Hicks probably the best duck hunting video I've seen on RU-vid to date. Perfect camera set up, great slow mo, and nothing but pure hunting. Great video.
Such a nice video. Props to you for not blasting music or some other weird stuff. Loved watching every second of it. Just a man in his honey hole slaying some ducks! Great job, thumbs up.
I live in northern MB , north of the 53rd parallel. We are allowed 8 ducks per day, any species or sex. My normal shells are 2.75" challenger #3, which are 1 1/16 at 1550 fps. I also have some Xpert 3" #2 that I use for snow geese or pass shooting. This is an unusual year. Last 2 seasons, I didn't see 500 mallards all year. This season, with all the flooding of the fields, we have lots of birds, but again, this is an anomaly. I thought it quite unusual to have GW teal this late in the season as well. Some years we are frozen out by mid October, so it could be an early season ending again..
You got to see me paddle the kayak. I figured that was enough non-shooting video for people to watch. I thought it would be interesting to see all those birds as well.
Don’t forget the closeup of the digital clock in the truck radio, the dumbass jokes in the 7-11, the too-dark clip in the decoy trailer and introducing the buddies with a horrible music track playing over all
Green wing teal. I didn't think I could catch up to them. I was targeting mallards, but I ended up taking a nice green wing that i had for lunch that day.
The camera has a 105-120 degree FOV, so those 30 yd looking shots are probably only 22-23 yds, but you still have to maintain your lead and keep the gun moving. Glad you enjoyed them. W.
You can change the aperature settings, but you have to do it on the SD card. I guess you could have a couple cards, and have one set up for low light conditions, then switch it out once the sun comes up. Some of my videos are shot at sunrise -30 minutes,so that is as dark as you can get it. I think my Sept 1st video starts at 1/2 hour prior to sunrise if you need a comparison. The more light, the better the video detail becomes. I think the brightest day conditions are on Sept 30th video for comparison. For a relatively cheap camera (I paid less than 150 USD), it does the job good enough for me.
Beretta Extrema A300. 28" barrel (I would prefer a 30 or 32" if they made one...). I replaced the factory chokes with a set of Trulocks. Currently, in all my videos, I am using a Trulock Precision Hunter Extended SKI (0.005" constriction) ported choke. It is a magical choke. I am getting nice killing patterns at 15-20 yds all the way out to good centre core patterns at 35 yds, so I really don't use anything else.
We won't have freezing temps at night until mid November according to weather network. You then need the ditches and creeks and rivers to freeze, or at least 6" of snow on the fields to get the migration moving.
Practice makes perfect. Having wide open chokes and shooting at birds under 30 yds will make anyone'e shooting look good. I use a Trulock SKI (0.005" constriction) choke in all my videos. Makes me look good.
Very fun hunt. Some other guys discovered it the next day, and within 4 days, no birds. I did hunt a flooded hole within the field next to it the next week.
I did a bunch of scouting in last 2 days (nov 1 and 2) and the majority of the birds have flown south. I thought they would stay here until hard freeze up, but I appear to have been wrong.
The gun is a Beretta A300 Extrema, which is basically an A400 with the recoil from the 391 series (first generation kick off) Quite a bit cheaper than the A400. It has been replaced with the A350 Extrema. The camera is a Replay Mini 1080 that I have with a hat clip, upside down so it is right over my shooting eye. Takes some effort, but gives a great perspective down the barrel.
Don't hunt under the "X" and you can keep a field (or water hole) hot for a long time. I hunted this same spot for close to two weeks be taking small flocks and singles, and letting the big flocks alone.
Depends. In two of my videos, I am using the Kayak as an improvised layout blind, and I use the seat as a headrest, and squish down in the front of the yak. Allows you to get prone and hide from the birds easily. The October 10th video and 22nd video shows this. In this video, I am laying down on the bank, and just trying not to move too much. With the mud and the higher bank, the birds generally don't see me until its too late.
Old Towne Predator K140, discontinued but can find on secondary market. Excellent for hunting. Basically a two man kayak converted to a single, with lots of storage room fore and aft.
Trulock Extended Ported Precison Hunter SKI (0.005" constriction). I use SK1 for all my hunting lately. Great patterns out to 35 yds and anything under is not chewed up too badly,.
Sarcocystis is a parasite that burrows into muscle tissue (breast). Very visible when cleaning birds and it is safe to eat the birds if cooked properly, but I usually discard these birds. I have only seen it twice in over 40 years of waterfowling, both times in a pintail.
I have lots of videos that are shot at legal shooting time, which is sunrise -30 minutes, and you can make out the birds, but it is dark and hard to see. By sunrise, low light works just fine.
Hey Warren, been a subscriber for awhile now. But noticed someone is using your videos and labeling them as their own. The RU-vidr is call DZ Nation. Just thought I’d give ya a heads up.
Northern Manitoba north of 53rd parallel. Drainage ditch between two farms. Back of one farm was flooded. Several thousand ducks and geese using field.
I also don't like shooting into big flocks, as it educates a lot of birds. Better to chase them up , and take the singles and pairs as they come back. Keeps the area fresh for a long time if you can do that.
WIll have to wait until next season. We are done here. To clean a duck for the oven, you are basically doing everything you would to clean a chicken or other fowl.
@@ZeddicusTheMage I can shoot ruffed grouse and rabbits with my air rifle, but it is illegal to shoot migratory game birds with one . Only legal to use shotguns smaller than 8 gauge. I use a 12 or a 20 gauge. There are guys who shoot birds with archery, and it is some kind of impressive.
