October Caddis - Fly Tying Appalachian/Great Smoky Mountain Trout Patterns

While not a Great Smoky Mountain original, this version of a caddis dry fly has been very popular in the park for decades. These caddis hatch in a number of streams in the area, with perhaps the most notable hatch in Abrams Creek. An overall great fall pattern for many areas of the country.
Hook: #8-12 Dry fly (straight or curved)
Thread: Orange or rusty brown
Body: Rusty orange rabbit
Underwing: Natural or tan Z-lon
Wing: Elk hair (or deer hair)
Hackle: Brown dry fly

Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. I've been uploading at least three new videos a week (usually Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday).

Question: what do you all think of the music in the background during the tie? I'm still experimenting with what will make the videos better (and more entertaining). Please be honest! I'm not in love with background music either way and if it is more distracting to anyone watching, I'm happy to not put it in. That makes editing a bit easier anyway. Thanks for your help!

I prefer music for videos like this tbh. The trick is that it can’t overpower your voice. In my “short” videos i do the music and it takes a lot of tweaking to make it “background” but usually my music volume has to be below 80% so you can hear my voice

I really didn't notice i'm locked and tuned into your teaching. I did like the drum roll and the script you wrote for picking the winner. great channel and I think the BEST one i'm following in my opinion. Great and Happy tying Sir.

Very nice fly Sir. The items that you are giving back are unbelievable. Matt you are one of a kind my friend. As for the background music 🎶? Funny, there are times I hear it. Other times I’m so caught up with your tying that I won’t even notice it. This was a very enjoyable video to watch. Great job.

I like this. I think I may use red squirrel or orange elk/deer for the overwind. Zelon is a synthetic.

I am hooked on your flies!! You make it look like just about anyone can tie flies. I’ve mostly done crappie jigs, have just been too intimidated by tying actual flies for fly fishing, though I have caught fish on my own jigs while fly fishing.

Of course you can tie these flies! One thing I always say is it's all about having fun! And you might be surprised but even our earliest, craziest, shaggiest flies can still catch fish. :-)

Saw one the over the weekend that a size 8 might have been a tad small. It was certainly much larger than any October caddis I've ever seen. Oh, I believe Z-lon is actually the underfur from the belly of a wooly mammoth. Ha! At least that explanation would explain its cost.

Ha! Yeah, I think these are generally pretty big bugs. Doing a little more research, a size 12 seems to be the smallest anyone ties it. Sizes 8 and 10 seem to be the most common throughout all of the east coast.

Well thank you Rod! I use two cameras. For the flies, it's a Sony Handicam. A pretty low-end camcorder that I put about 4-5 inches from the vise. For the talking head part I use a Canon M50. It's a fairly standard bloggers DSLR.

Is there any particular reason why you don't use a palmer hackle as on the standard EHC? I have a Peak rotary vise, and I like it. I have all 3 jaws, and all hold hooks well.

I don't mind videos with background music, but more so when there are gaps in the video with no talking. Yours are so full of instruction, the music is almost a distraction. I would say keep experimenting but turn the volume way down on the music. Not sure what tool you use for editing but there is a way in Davinci Resolve to get the music volume to automatically turn down even more anytime talking is going on.

Thanks Debora! I just watched this one (live on RU-vid, not on my computer). And I think I did leave the background music a bit too loud. Ugh. I don't use Davinci Resolve (I couldn't get it to run on my Linux machine). I'm using an open source editor called Olive. It's nice, but I don't think it has any capability to adjust the sound lower for when I'm talking. I'll keep experimenting but may have to just turn it way down, or get rid of it all together. Dale- it certainly could be, if tied to match the colors of the caddis in any particular water, at any particular time of year. But generally with these rusty, orangish colors, it's tied to imitate the actual October Caddis Flies in certain waters. Limited on elk hair , what else would work ,can deer hair be used for this too .

Absolutely! In fact, most of my "elk hair" caddis patterns are actually made from deer hair. Just make sure to use deer BODY hair. Bucktail is totally different.
