Thanks for this! Great vid! Lovely fly. I'm going to tie this one soon! I am a big fan of the Partridge and Orange - the first flies that I've tied on my own, at home.

That's some nice soft hackle. I am familiar with partridge etc. but have not seen this type of cape. Like the use of the feather rope as body material. I am a fan of soft hackles and they are versatile as you say. Thanks!

I love your videos, but what if you fished with the flies you tied, how to fish them, and where the best places to fish them. Thanks : )

Thanks for another great video! I have a question. I was wondering where you get your hackle from. is it a local shop,or online. Cause i have no local shops that give me any good options, but i am fairly lost online so maybe you point me in the right direction. And would you recommend a cape or a sadle as my first real dry fly pelt. I see that you use mostly whiting and a was wondering if the lower end grades are still worth buying. Cause i see a big price difference between grades. Just preparing for my first full winter at the tying bench. Most all of my skill is credited to you alone so thanks a lot. Keep up the good work :)

Whiting makes an "Introductory Dry Fly Pack" that includes 4 half capes in brown, dun, grizzly, and cream. At $79.00 it may seem a bit steep, but in reality it is one of the best hackle deals around. You can tie a huge range of dry flies in a wide variety of sizes and it will last you for years. Shannons online store has a couple in stock now, but they tend to go quick. In my opinion Bronze Grade capes work just great. Maybe if I was a presentation tier, I could justify the price of the higher grades, but I'm not.

Is this more effective swung or dead drifted?

They are both equally effective. Hang it behind a weighted nymph. Drop it off a big floaty dry. Swing it naked or with a split shot a foot or so up the tippet. You can even smear it with floatant and fish it as a dry fly. It's why I like soft hackles so much, no matter what you do with them, they work.
